It had been a wonderful Pokemon Contest, and hard-fought on all sides. But there could only be one winner, and this time the judges had ruled in favor of Kishin's opponent, leaving her with second place.

Oh well, we can't win them all, Arissa thought as she watches Kishin. The Archeops didn't seem to mind, and continued to cuddle one of the plush Torchics that Arissa had given her after winning her first contest. She was constantly carrying and cuddling one or both of the toys, and rarely seen without them. Not for the first time, Arissa thought, I should really see about breeding her. Though if I decide to sell any of the eggs, getting her to let go of them might be a bit of a challenge.

After the awards ceremony, Arissa caught one of the buses heading back to Katarina, since she had no transportation of her own. The bus allowed pokemon to be left out of pokeballs, and thankfully Kishin wasn't so big that it was uncomfortable to share a seat with her. The two settled in near the back, and Kishin took a nap while Arissa read a book. It was a long enough trip that the bus stopped in Moterossa to refuel and let the passengers get out to stretch their legs or grab a bite to eat. Arissa went off to find a bathroom while Kishin preferred to just walk around a bit, so the trainer instructed her pokemon to stay near the bus before heading off.

Kishin ambled about, looking around the area and cheerfully greeting anyone she came across. The bus had parked on the edge of town, and there wasn't much close besides some convenience stores and a lot of grass with a few bushes. But something tucked under one of the bushes caught Kishin's eye. Curious at the flash of white amid the green leaves, she went over to investigate. When she nudged aside a branch, she found herself staring at an egg.

What was en egg doing here? It seemed to be quite alone, no signs of a nest or anything. And a quick look around showed no pokemon nearby that hadn't been on the bus. There were no footprints that weren't hers, either. Strange. Then how did the egg get there? Unless its mother has just gone off to get some food or something? But surely she would have stayed nearby, and certainly would have left footprints. no matter how much she considered it, it seemed quite clear that there was nobody taking care of the egg.

What a lonely thing, to be left here like that. And surely it would get cold under that bush, if nothing worse happened to it. <"Well, don't you worry,"> she told the egg as she carefully nudged it out. <"Mama Kishin has you now. I'll make sure you stay safe and sound."> She very carefully tucked it under one wing, wedging it between her body and the plush chick before closing her wing firmly over it to make sure it would stay put. Then she went right back to the bus and took her seat again, not wanting to move around too much for fear of shaking it loose. When Arissa returned, she found her pokemon cuddling something under her wing as usual and looking very pleased with herself. But since Kishin had been doing that a lot since she got her plushies, the young lady thought nothing of it and went back to reading her book.

As soon as Kishin and Arissa got back to their apartment, the Archeops trotted straight to her nest in the corner of the living room. It was made of an oversized pillow meant as a bed for canine pokemon, supplemented with a couple old blankets that had been arranged on and around it. She nudged around the blankets a while, tucking in her plush besides a second that had been waiting there for her, and adding the egg between them. Then she setting down to brood over them all, fluffing out her feathers in a very pleased manner.

Arissa had been tired from the long trip and paid her pokemon little mind, instead heading right for the kitchen. She fixed herself some dinner and set out a bowl of pokemon food for Kishin. The pokemon left her nest just long enough to gulp down the food before going back. Arissa vaguely noticed the Archeops settling down before tucking a head under her wing, apparently going to sleep. This sounded like a good idea to the trainer, who headed right to bed herself after cleaning up from dinner.

While Arissa slept right through the night, Kishin did not. She was so excited by the egg that she was warming that she kept waking up, feeling the unfamiliar hard shape of the shell beneath her, and moving aside to take a look at it again. The lights were off for the night, but the moonlight streaming in the windows shone brightly on the white shell, the darker markings showing clear along its surface. She would listen to it for any hint of sound, roll it over so that all sides would get her warmth, then settle down again to resume her rest.

Although Kishin had won a Contest before, and now come second place in another, that wasn't a steady source of income. As a result, Arissa had taken a part-time job waitressing at a nearby cafe in order to make a living. She had to work the day after they got back, but she was so tired she nearly slept through her alarm. She ended up having to rush out the door, dimly noticing that Kishin was still in her nest as she left to make it to work barely on time.

When she came home after her shift, she did noticed that Kishin was still on her nest. Puzzled, she asked, "Kishin, have you been there all day?" Kishin nodded at this. Even more puzzled, Arissa asked, "Why? Are you tired, or sick or..." Kishin cut her off by shaking her head, then stepped off the nest to show Arissa the egg she'd been warming.

Arissa stared at the small, rounded shape nestled in the blankets. Moreover, she immediately recognized the pattern of bold red and blue shapes on white. "A Togepi egg? How? Is it yours? ...Is that even possible?" Kishin declined to answer, just settled back on the egg with a contented coo.

Well, even if Kishin didn't want to answer her questions, Arissa could answer one of them herself. She was an aspiring breeder, after all, and had a number of book on the subject, especially ones relating to the Archen line. She pulled one of these off the shelf and leafed through it to search for answers. "Let's see...Togepis are unable to breed, which makes sense considering they're still mostly in the shell. But their evolutions can breed, and are compatible with the Archen line...so it could technically be yours." She snapped the book shut and looked back at her pokemon. "Though if it is, when could you have met the father? You've hardly been out of my sight since before we left for the Contest." Kishin still offered no comment or explanation, and appeared to have dozed off.

Arissa sighed. "I suppose even if it isn't, we'd have no was of finding out whose it is. I just hope nobody suddenly appears and claimed we stole their egg or something." So she left her pokemon to brood the mysterious egg and went off to make some lunch.

Kishin stayed at her nest constantly for about 3 weeks, leaving only for necessities like food. Arissa took to reading up on Togepis to try and more information, but that gave her no idea on how to tell if the egg was still alive or how soon it might hatch. She would check the egg now and then, which Kishin would allow, though the pokemon never took her eyes off the egg. Arissa could never see much of a change from the egg, though over time she thought she might feel the occasional faint twitch. It was faint enough that she could have been imaging it though, so she never had any idea when it might hatch, or even if it was alive in the first place. So she'd just give it back to Kishin and keep wondering about it.

Arissa was spending her day off relaxing in her living room when Kishin suddenly sat up and cocked her head. Arissa, puzzled, started to ask, "Kishin, what..." But her Archeops just flapped a wing at her in a shushing motion and sat still again. So Arissa sat up and listened too. A moment later they both heard the tiniest of sounds, like a faint scratching. Kishin carefully stepped off her nest and pushed aside the blankets to stare at the egg and listen again. Then the sound repeated, the tiniest scratching coming from the egg. Kishin hunkered down to croon at it even as Arissa understood what it meant. The egg was hatching!

Arissa had read that Togepis would imprint on the first creature they saw, so for Kishin's sake she kept well back and let her pokemon stay closest to the egg. But even across the room she could see the egg start to rock and cracks form along the top of the shell. Kishin kept up a steady crooning, urging the little one on as small chips of shell began to flake off. A cream-colored foot kicked out of a hole at the bottom, then a stubby arm punched out of a a spot on the side. Kishin carefully turned the egg so that the arm was facing her, but didn't touch the egg otherwise. It seemed she'd decided the hatchling should make its own way into the world.

Finally the whole top of the egg seemed to crumble apart at once. Softly rounded spikes unfurled, flicking fragments of shell off as the baby Togepi opened his eyes for the first time. Naturally, Kishin was right in front of him, and she brightly chirped a greeting at the newborn. He blinked, then smiled widely and peeped back at her. As soon as his other foot and arm poked through the shell, Kishin reached out to scoop him up in her wing.

Arissa smiled fondly. So her motherly pokemon had a baby of her own now. And one that would likely stay a baby a while, since Togepis tended to do so. But the question remained; was he literally her child? Had she laid his egg, or gotten it some other way? Now that she was quite sure the Togepi had imprinted on Kishin, she walked over to the cuddling pokemon to get a better look at the hatchling. His markings didn't really resemble Kishin's, but he had some darker markings. It was hard to tell at first, but they might be shiny; Togepi's shiny form was not too much darker than its normal colors. In which case it might be possible for him to be Kishin's, since with her coloration, any children of hers would have to have at least a recessive gene for shiny coloration.

Hmmm...ah, well. They didn't exactly have pokemon maternity tests, and both pokemon were quite convinced that they belonged together now, regardless of the baby's parentage. She left the two pokemon to get acquainted with each other and went to the kitchen to get them a treat.
