Hel needed some time to let it smooth over for herself, so she did. She returned to her sister’s room a few days later. All the lovely marks her sister left on her were still quite apparent, but eh. She didn’t care all too much, honestly. After stepping away for some time though, to think it over, she had decided…she really needed her sister to know where she was at mentally. Maybe Freya wouldn’t be happy with it…but at least she’d know how she felt.

The reaper didn’t even bother knocking…and was maybe a bit surprised to find her door unlocked.

When she stepped inside though…well.

Well she was definitely surprised. Hel’s eyes widened as she stared around her sister’s room. It was in the same state when she left the other day. It also didn’t take the ghoul that long to find a lump on the bed…in the same place she left her.

Hel scowled.

“Freya.” She called out, striding towards the ghoul. “Freya, have you seriously not moved? Answer me, Freya.”

Before Hel had come to visit her sister days ago, Kettil's father had sent very upsetting messages to Freya's phone that explained why Kettil would be missing for a week. Little did he know that he'd chosen the worst week of all time to take his son away from the ghoul who'd come to think of Kettil as her only way towards recovery. Freya still had nothing of her own to hold on to, so when her sister left her in that bed after driving her past the point of thought, she'd stayed there.

Not a single thought had passed through Freya's crippled mind for days. She'd breathed because her body made her. She slept when her body told her to, and she woke when she couldn't hold on to the sweet peace of unconsciousness any longer. But even awake, she wasn't really there. The blissful land of haze and thoughtlessness had missed her, and she it. She'd remained there every day, slowly whittling away all of the work that she and Kettil had put into her health for the last few months.

It felt so nice.

Hel stopped near Freya’s bed, her frown deepening, and then placed her hands on the ghoul’s shoulders, and gave her a firm shake.

“Freya. Freya, answer me. Anything, just to know that you are listening to me.”

Freya's body shook bonelessly when her sister shook her, but she didn't respond the way Hel hoped. In fact, if Freya realized Hel was in her room at that moment, she probably would have started screaming again.

She felt the hands touching her, but her head lolled back and her eyes barely fluttered to look away. The spark of thought threatened to ruin her perfect, painless existence, so her subconscious worked quickly to stifle any real recognition. Perhaps those hands were her mothers, trying to wake her up in the morning.

Yes, that had to be it. The firm, but warm hands of her mother forcing her to get up for the day and get moving. She all but ignored them, but the thought of her mother put her at ease. Despite looking away, eyes unfocused at nothing in particular, Freya's lips twitched in a smile.

This unresponsiveness was bothering her, until her head moved slightly, and her eyes fluttered. Hel sighed, her lips pulling into a frown. “…Ya know. I am the younger one, Freya. If anyone should be acting like this…it is me. How selfish of you, to put me in this position…but we did establish that it always has been about you.”

Hel then grabbed Freya’s nose, pinching it tightly between her thumb and forefinger.

Freya. You are listening to me, ya?” Hel's voice was anything but soft.
PostPosted: Thu Mar 21, 2013 5:06 pm

Pinching her nose made Freya's lips part to breathe, but the words were distorted, and they didn't make any sense to her. So she let them go, like paper ships on a rolling river, and they fluttered away without another thought.

It was almost jarring, then, that Freya suddenly pushed herself up to a sitting position, rested her back on the backboard of the bed, and turned her head just slightly. At this point, she stopped moving, but the small, twitchy smile remained on her face. She looked like she was sleep walking, without the walking part.

But at the very end, when she demanded to know if Freya was listening, Freya's response was a flicker of blinking, a slow turn of her head in the general direction of her sisters, and a soft exhale of breath. She heard her. She heard her sister - but the words were passing through a barrier of subconscious that forced her to hallucinate a safer image. She heard those words coming from her mother, because they made sense, and she was safe.

Hel released Freya as the ghoul sat up, and she stared at her for a long while with a blank look. Sheesh. Was this the best she was going to get? Hel frowned, and puffed out her cheeks. It probably was…and Jack damn it, she was going to get this off her chest! ******** waiting!

The reaper exhaled loudly, and then turned, scooting into the kitchen to get a broom and dustpan…and she started to clean. She might as well while she talked.

“I wonder often as of late…” Hel started, her voice carrying strongly. “When things had changed so much and so drastically…but then I came to the realization that everything in my short span of existence has been leading up to this point, Freya.” The tinkling of glass being swept up was heard as well, as Hel worked on cleaning up the mess from the window that Freya had shattered. “Well…let me start with this. No matter what happens…or what I say…I do love you, Freya. I…I love our family too. Mama, Papa…our sisters, and I do not doubt that they all love me as well but…” Here Hel paused, and took a breath, staring out the broken window.

“I always felt like I did not belong. This probably had everything to do with my skin. Not only that…I felt rather insignificant in comparison to the rest of you. If it had not been for my split skin…I highly doubt I would have received any other extra attention aside from that. Sif is the pride of the family…everyone has high expectations of you because you are the next eldest…then there are a whole gaggle of ghouls to go through before you reach…me. I am in eight shadows. You all cast lights of your own, and I could not create my own light to put you all in the dark until I applied to Amityville, yanno?”

She looked back over her shoulder at her sister now, just to see what she was doing before she went on.

The sound of glass tinkling transformed into the gentle tinkle of a windchime, and memories danced hazily in Freya's mind, dull and half-formed. She could still hear Hel through her mothers voice, but none of the words made any sense, and Freya couldn't pull herself together long enough to understand them. As soon as she tried, her protective mechanisms triggered, and her haze deepened until she couldn't think.

She knew someone was talking about Hel. Talking ill of her. Freya wouldn't allow it, not ever. She wanted to say something.. anything.. she wanted to stop this person from talking. But all she could do was furrow her brow, trying hard just to see reality from the fiction her mind trapped her in.

Well…it felt like she was listening. That was good enough. Hel sighed heavily, and then smiled wryly. It had been hard on herself, to be honest with herself and coming to terms with this. It was harder to be honest with her sister. Hel resumed cleaning up the glass.

“Freya…I do not care to return home. Ever. It does not feel like home to me, not anymore. I could go the rest of my existence without going back. Our sisters are a bumbling bunch of ambitionless feathered bird brains. They are not going anywhere. They ride on the coat tails of Mama and Papa’s honor and accomplishments, and they just have no drive and big dreams…and that is so sad. Even Sif!” Hel was getting more impassioned as she spoke. “Ya, she went to an honorable school, and ya, she is married to a well groomed reaper, and ya, their scarelings will be beautiful, but she is stuck in that town, Freya!” Hel exclaimed. “It looks pretty and grand, but she is miserable and going to stay miserable! That is the end of her story! Written and done. Her book is now on the shelf where it will collect dust!”

Hel released a loud breath. “…Scarelings.” She mused. “Ya know…I do not want any scarelings, because of our family. There is something…lonely about being the youngest of nine, did yanno that? It was always a fight to try and hold Mama or Papa’s hand…and I know they both love me, and I love them too…but…ah…You and Fulla and Sif are Papa’s favorites…and Mama is just so preoccupied with the older ones…educating and marrying and what not…I would have shriveled up probably if it was not for you, Freya.” She laughed a bit.

The ghoul dumped the glass shards into the trash, and deposited the broom and dust pan back to the side. “That is why I do not want to go back. There is nothing for me there anymore. I am ready to…make my own way, and have my own things, and I am just ready to stand on my own. I want to build my own future with my own two hands. Whatever is out there that I want, I just want to reach out and take it.”

She turned back to Freya, and waited.

And then, suddenly, her walls cracked.

It was the conflicting vision of her mother telling her she never wanted to return home that made her hazy, safe filter sharpen back into reality. There was nothing safe about hearing your mother tell you she never wanted to return home - the mere idea of her leaving Papa, and all the children - no, Freya couldn't handle another abandonment. Her safety zone had become unsafe, and it shattered, leaving her in nothing but the cold cruelty of reality. At least there, her mother wasn't abandoning her.

But her sister was.

Freya's eyes sharpened as they settled on her sister for the first time that day. The sudden stinging pains on her arm and leg caught her attention, and she pulled up her blankets just enough to see the pools of blood that her untreated wounds had left to dry on her bed. It was a disgusting little sight, but it was days old, and there was nothing left to be done about it. Freya settled the blanket back down, and turned wet eyes back up to her sister.

Everything the ghoul had been saying slowly started to settle in, slicing away at the scarred flesh of her heart until the blood on the bed was the least of her problems. She'd always known Hel felt overshadowed, but in her eyes, in her eyes, Hel had always been the most important person to exist. No one overshadowed Hel, for Freya. No one could ever live up to the importance her sister had held in her heart. She'd clung to her sister like a lifeline, and never let go.

And as she realized that, a sad sort of acceptance took hold of her.

"I thinks-" Freya's voice was quiet and hoarse from lack of use, and she cleared her throat to get the scratchiness out. "Deep downs, I always knew that's what yeh'd want." Freya's eyes fell to the bed, and she let out a painful sigh. "I convinced myself that I came teh Amity teh takes care of yeh, but that was a lie. I comes here because.. because I knew yeh were never comings back." The tears fell freely from Freya's eyes. "And I didn't wants teh be left behind without yeh. I would gives up all of them, even my own twin sister, if it meant not losing yeh."

And with that admission, Freya's last little self-lie came crumbling to the ground. Maybe things hadn't changed between them as much as she'd thought. Maybe, in the end, Freya had always been the one who needed Hel, more.

There was something rather relieving about seeing her sister ‘come to’ so to speak. Hel’s lips parted a bit, and then a small smile couldn’t help but pull at her lips. The younger valkyrie abandoned her task of cleaning to move back over to the bed, and she settled on the edge, near her sister.

The reaper was silent for a while, mulling over her thoughts and Freya’s words. “…I know.” She said, finally. “…And yanno, it got you here Freya, and that is good. But…that can not keep on carrying you. I can not keep on carrying you. I will not keep on carrying you. I love you, Freya. I do. I always will. Nothing will ever change that. Nothing. But I am ready to be on my own now. I am ready to go on and lead my own life, and not have to worry about whether you are shattering like glass or not. Oh…I will always worry about you, though!” She grinned now, “Because we are sisters…but I should not be so worried about you that I can not let you out of my sight, yanno?” She reached out and placed a hand on her arm, smiling a bit at the contrast of light and dark.

“I think…that you do have the ability to stand on your own…and well…you are going to have to now.” She lifted her hand to wag her finger at her sister. “I am not carrying you anymore. So right now…I am giving you a push! Freya, my dearest sister in all of Halloween, keep moving forward. Never stop going forward. I do not care if you have to crawl your way there, just keep moving. Even though I am not carrying you anymore…I will always be there with you. I will crawl with you, I will walk with you…and that goes the same for…well…those who are most important to you.”

Hel's words, as passionate and inspiring as they were, hit a brick wall when they reached Freya. The ghoul looked like she was crumbling, sinking back down into the bed, and curling up defensively.

"Do yeh really thinks yeh carries me, Hel?" Her hoarse whisper scratched out. "I comes here, because I didn't thinks I could lives without yeh. But do yeh really thinks that actually worked? Do yeh thinks yeh've carried me anywhere since I've gotten here?" Freya's hand lifted out of the covers, and she began picking shards of glass out of her skin, re-opening the tiny wounds that had dried around the glass. "Yeh talks like yeh've been the one that was there for me when I needed yeh, all those times.." The glass tore at her skin, leaving little trickles of blood. "Yeh talks like I'm strong, because of yeh. Yeh says yeh thinks I can stands on my own two feet, and yeh has faith in me." Freya's eyes turned cold, and flickered away. "Hel, yeh don't even know who I am anymore. Yeh reached yehr goal already, before yeh knew it. Yeh lived yehr life independently, crumpet." She dropped the little shard of glass, and spread the trickle of blood until it was a red path of war paint down her arm. "Yehr so, so wrong. Stupid, blind, selfish, wrong."

And her eyes, flickering back to Hel, looked at her sister for the first time with clarity she wished she never had. "Don't talks like yeh knows what I can or cannot duu. Yeh don't knows who I am, anymore. I fell too far for yeh teh sees me, anymore."

Well…there went that great enlightening feeling Hel felt. Somehow…somehow it was ironic yet not at all unsurprising that Freya would destroy it all. Hel just stared at her sister as she spoke, and her body lacked any movement, except for the way the corners of her lips oh so slowly curled up into nothing short of a smirk. “I may be stupid, blind, selfish and wrong, dearest sister--“ Now her words were dripping wit sarcasm. “But at least I do not pretend to be anything other than that.” Here Hel shot forward, and towered over her sister. She them slammed both of her hands against the headboard, pinning her elder sister between her dark arms.

“I know exactly what you can and can not do.” Hel hissed. “I know exactly who you are, because I am your sister, and maybe if you got your head out of your a**, you could see who you are and see the path you need to take to move forward.” The reaper leaned now, her nose brushing her sister’s, though it was far from affectionate, and her voice was anything but warm. “If you have fallen, then ******** get up and keep going.”
PostPosted: Fri Mar 22, 2013 9:31 pm

This moment, dripping with anger, and frustration, was the closest Freya had felt to her sister in a very long time. For a single moment, she lifted her hand, and pressed it against one of the arms beside her, brushing them with a soft, regretful touch, before her hand fell to the bed and her face turned away.

"Wrong." Freya whispered, with an aching sort of quiet that felt like every word was a struggle. She felt it happening. She felt her sisters rage building up, that familiar rage that she knew all too well, but she couldn't feel it. She was mad, but she couldn't use that rage as strength. She couldn't even look at her sister, anymore.

The ghoul was so close, closer than she'd ever been, but she was pulling away at the same time, and Freya knew fighting it would only make Hel pull faster. Her heart mourned painfully with loss.

She wasn't going anywhere. And Hel was leaving her behind.

“STOP SAYING THAT!” Hel exploded, still very much in her sister’s face, and her heart couldn’t help but swell painfully at that touch. Like how maybe now, deep down, she knew she couldn’t pull her sister up from this, but her brain and her mouth still held onto the hope that she could.

“The only one who is wrong here is you! You are not even trying! You are just…just laying there and letting the world pass you by!”
