It had been a long night. Amarus was actually making an effort both at getting along with people, and at passing classes. It was a first in both counts. Before, she'd sort of just resigned herself to being a villain in others' eyes, and doing whatever she wanted, when she wanted to.
Okay, to be honest, she pretty much still did that. She just wanted to be not-a-d**k more often than she did before. As a result, though, she'd found herself wandering around campus late one night, in a cozy sweater she'd picked up at the Maul last time they'd been there, instead of her usual robes. Her bells still jingled as the ghost ghoul walked a couple inches above the ground, alerting anyone nearby to her presence.
Because she had been putting forth so much effort, she was actually a lot less destructive, and more calm that night. The perfect night to talk to the Lotus Eater, without worrying if she had hidden a firecracker in a hat or recruited several small creatures to sing a love ballad or even just tied someone's shoelaces together while they weren't looking. Amarus was actually in, more or less, a contemplative mood.kurotomato OK SO I know you are busy, and I love you forever and a day, and I could not remember at all if I had said I would start this or what was happening or please forgive me I'm so scattered BUT if we don't have a starting yet for this... now we do? ; A; <3

The night air was actually somewhat pleasant, and certainly a great deal less stuffy than his dorm room had felt. Ren closed his eyes briefly and inhaled slowly, letting the quiet solitude of the night surround him.
His mind would not settle, no matter how many times he tried to sort through the chaos inside of it. He opened his eyes again, disappointed and frustrated, and padded softly across the grounds, his feet bare on the cool grass.
He could hear bells.
...LW?
But the shewolf was currently asleep in her own room; Ren had just checked in on her not five minutes prior. Had she woken up and followed him? He made his way a little further, turning a corner and catching sight of a ghoul, just ahead.
A ghoul that was not LW. Ren breathed a sigh - of relief, or disappointment, he wasn't sure, but he slipped his hands into the pockets of his pinstriped trousers and made his way towards her anyway.
"Nice night to be out for a midnight stroll, wouldn't you say?"

Amarus was not paying attention enough to hear Ren approach until he was close enough for her to hear the quiet sound of his bare feet in the grass. She turned to face him, tugging the sleeves of her baggy sweater lower and fretting at the edges with her fingers. She folded her hands into a kuji-kiri, to steady them and focus herself. She tilted her head to regard him, her bells ringing.
"It is, yes. It would be alright to be lost on a night like this, I think," she said, her silver eyes regarding the stranger. Her face, blank at first, relaxed; one corner of her mouth curled up. "Do you always go for walks this late, in such nice clothing?" she asked him.
And, pausing, "Are you cold?" She looked off into the distance, and then reached up one hand to toy with the red teardrop crystal at her throat: something she did not do often, but had started to of late, while thinking. Contemplating. Or, perhaps, meditating: emptying her mind of all thought.
She didn't need to breathe, but she seemed to inhale deeply in that moment. Her skin flickered with her Lotus Eater aura, the invisible smoke curling up into the night air. Calm. Inhibit worry, inhibit a sense of time passing. In theory. It had a different degree of effect on each different student, and she hadn't found a pattern yet.
"Would you like some company? If you are up this late, ah, barefoot on campus... does something trouble you?" She folded her arms in front of her, not in an aggressive or defensive gesture, but as if holding onto herself. She tilted her head, again, regarding him carefully. She smiled.
For one night, she could be unguarded and kind, right? It wouldn't ruin her reputation: no one would believe it. Just once.

He vaguely recognized her from around school, though not well enough to know her name or frankly, much about her at all. Ren's fingers twitched a little in the pockets of his pants, his tail restlessly swaying from side to side as he said casually, "Sometimes. Lately I haven't been able to sleep well."
His expression seemed to shift slightly, his voice becoming softer, almost inaudible, as he stared up into the night sky, as though seeing something that was not there. "I haven't been able to sleep well for a very long time."
But then it seemed he remember where he was and who he was with, and Ren lowered his gaze back to the ghoul, one ear flattening back against his golden hair, the other swiveling towards the ghoul.
"I don't mind the company," he said lightly. "And to be honest, something is always troubling me. There is little that can be said about that, since there is no end of the trouble you speak of."

Wasn't it better that they were relative strangers? Wasn't it better, tonight, that they didn't know much about each other at all? Infinite possibilities. Shedding the burden that one expects them to feel. "If only I could trade," she mused, "because I sleep far too often. I have access to a fairly strong sedative... and by access, I mean it is inescapable."
Amarus just stood there, in the dark, casting her own glow: her feet didn't quite touch the ground. Her eyes reflected her own incandescence, making her seem warmer, somehow, than normal. Cool as a mirror's surface, except tonight.
"Why would you want to be troubled endlessly?" Amarus asked. She was perplexed, and faintly amused; who would do that to themselves?
