Time seemed to fly when having fun. This was certainly true for Akio. No longer a kitten, but not quite an adult, the red, white, and gold neko had grown since he first met his good friend. Akio trotted on the sidewalks of the familiar city occasionally stopping to pounce into snow piles out of old playful habits. He was on his way to see Heskil. "She should be around here somewhere," thought the adolescent looking around for his friend's distinct features.

Leaving was always bittersweet. On the one hand, Heskil was heading home- although this town, and all the towns on the way, were "home" to her in some ways, she thought of the snowy mountain town as her "main" home, the place to where she belonged, rather than one of the many places she belonged. She did miss it, but...

But here there was company she couldn't have there. Other Maneki Neko, others like her, companionship of a very different sort to the humans who viewed her as an "other", someone to be looked up to, revered, but so rarely treated as an equal. She missed the companionship of her own kind sorely in the warmer months when she retreated back up the mountain- and she knew that some of her friends missed her as much.

Speaking of whom... As she finished saying her farewells to one of her Maneki Neko friends, she turned away and her eyes rested on Akio's vivid fur. She wasn't sure how well he would take the parting; he had been so young when they had first met at the beginning of winter. He had grown so fast; but she suspected he wasn't yet mature enough to view the separation as a temporary goodbye. Of course, I've been part of his life since before he could speak. It may be a big change for him.

She sighed and shook her head, silky mane swinging, before starting to head over to him. Forcing herself to put all sad thoughts aside and putting her usual cheerful smile on her face, she called his name.

Akio ears perked right up when he heard his name being called. Trotting over to meet her halfway, the boy gave a happy greeting.

"Heya Heskil," he said cheerfully with a big grin. His ability to talk had gotten much better since the first time they met although he preferred to use basic words and simple speech.

"Ready to play? I found a nice snow pile to jump in at the park. It's getting harder to find them lately." Akio almost sounded disappointed with that last sentence. He didn't quite understand how seasons worked just yet. "We'll have to think up a new game soon."

Heskil hid her consternation at Akio's words; he wasn't making it easy to explain. She'd tried to hint that she wouldn't be here year-around; but she knew, even at the time, that she had been too subtle. Now she would have to deal with it- although, thankfully, bringing people comfort was her speciality.

"I know, Akio." Heskil swished her tail thoughtfully; trying to work her explanation of snow and her own leaving together eloquently.
"You see... The snow is like me. When it's cold, it comes. But after a few months, it starts to get warm, and the snow starts to melt. And when it melts, I know it is time for me to leave as well. The snow will come back when it gets cold again, after the hot summer months- and so will I, but in the mean time... I will be travelling home, to where the snow never melts, in the mountains. And I will spend the hottest months there, bringing comfort to the people who have no other Maneki Neko to do it."

She smiled; radiating warmth, calmness, comfort. Her powers, born to bring comfort in the coldest months, also helped when the time for these partings came. She felt confident that it would help Akio feel better about their temporary parting- but if he didn't understand, then it would be temporary, and he would miss her and be sad. She wanted him to look forward to her return, not mourn that she wasn't with him right then.

Akio tilted his head slightly. His eyes traveled to the snow then back to Heskil as she tried explaining. She was like snow. Well she certainly was pretty and fun like snow. But did she really have to "melt"? The young male didn't want his only friend at the time to leave. If she didn't like the rising temperatures, maybe she could just live in a freezer. The grocery store had giant ones that Heskil could probably fit in. If she thought she was needed elsewhere, he was sure there were other nekos and human who could use her comforting company around town.

For all he knew, the hot summer months could last a really long time. By the time she comes back, the two of them could be completely different. There had to be way to get her to stay. Maybe asking nicely.

"Please don't go, Heskil," he said trying to sound as pathetically as possible. His high anxiety seemed to be preventing the Yuletide aligned neko's powers from being highly effective.
