Golden eyes peered out from behind a mask of leather leaves. The woman's gown was looked similarly natural and her hair cascaded down her back, unbound. Though the costume was simple, it was striking in its elegance. More than one appreciative look had been directed at the woman, though she was blind to them all. She had little interest in flirtation, and her blunt demeanor was liable to drive any would-be suitors away, regardless. Instead, Allison watched the crowd in quiet contemplation.

They were a merry lot, taking full advantage of the festivities; however, they seemed equally edgy. At least, the more intelligent or sensitive of them were. It was clear that there was more than met the eye going on at the Queen's Masque, but the hedge witch figured that it would reveal itself in time. At present, she had other matters to attend.

She glanced at her companion for the evening. "I still think that the ramifications of the Queen's proclamation is far more predictable for Chosen than hedge witches," she informed him, getting straight to the point of their primary concern: what do these changes mean for Chosen and hedge witches alike? "I cannot fully predict what this will mean for my kind, and it bothers me.

Theron didn't even own anything that counted as 'nice' clothing. A solitary life in the Wardwood meant he had no care or use for finery, and there were other things to spend coin on. The idea of accepting a free costume from the crown sat ill with him, as well; he had no desire to be indebted to anyone. Still, at Stormstruck's baleful stares and insistent prodding, he'd dug out his nicer sets of clothes and let her choose. Unlike his normal choices of brown and green, he was dressed in blue and white, though even his simple mask, decorated with a few choice feathers, didn't hide the fact that he was uncomfortable at the party. Large gatherings, especially ones with so many nobles and intellectuals, were not his idea of a good time, but he felt an obligation to be there.

He'd been uneasy about it all for weeks. Even after his choosing, he'd been perfectly happy to live alone, as usual, but he knew the old stories. Wardens meant Wolves, and Wolves meant war. There were so many Guardians at the ball, enough to surprise him and trouble him. As much of a boon as the Guardians had been to many of their Chosen, Theron knew that their coming heralded trouble.

Stormstruck snorted disdainfully, and he nodded slightly in agreement. "They may be more predictable, but you might have more freedom in the end. If there's trouble, I expect that Chosen will be the first called upon." It wasn't responsibility that bothered him, per se, as much as fear of conflicting responsibilities.

"Speaking of trouble, I think we may be in for a lot of it," he admitted, turning to study the crowd. Stormstruck stayed glued to his side, ears laid back; someone had tried to pet her earlier, and she'd nearly taken his hand off. "Even though the Queen's has her own Guardian, I doubt she'd officially recognize Chosen and hedge witches if she didn't think it was necessary, for some reason."

Alice frowned, not that her countenance had been jovial in the first place. "Perhaps," she said, not entirely convinced. There was no telling what part she would be expected to play in events to come. Her healing skills were not as impressive as her mothers had been, but it would not be a boast to say she made a competent herbalist. Her charms were more impressive, though, she was not certain what use they would be for a battle against wolves. It was something to think upon once this...event was over and she could return home.

"You certainly have a stronger chance of being drafted as a soldier than hedge witches, at any rate," she added, which may explain at least part of the Queen's intent. Given her lineage, Alice believed that she knew exactly why the Queen was gathering her Chosen and hedge witches. Of course, not everyone had a family that had been watching the Wood for wolf-sign since the end of the Great War, so she made plain her thoughts. "I believe we expect a war."

Neither of them were particularly cheery people, which suited Theron just fine. Despite the general aura of celebration and joviality, he was suspicious and uncomfortable, and he got the impressions that a lot of the attendees weren't looking closely enough at what was going on.

He nodded grimly at her assessment. "So do I. Why else build a barracks and train the Guardians? There were wolves this past winter, no matter how hard the rich in Palisade try to deny it." That had irritated him, since winter trapping was the best and he hadn't been able to go, but he was even more concerned by how bold the wolves were being. "If -- when it comes to war, I will do my part. You know as well as I do the old stories of wolves. We can't let them run roughshod over the people."

Shifting his weight, he turned his gaze towards the throne. "I'm not sure what to make of the queen's new advisor. I'm not one to judge based on rumor, but he's...not right. With a war brewing, we need allies we can trust." If he really was one of the spirits, Theron wasn't sure he could be trusted. Spirits were fundamentally different from humans, after all, and even if their goals temporarily aligned, there was no guarantee that they would stay that way.

In fact, it was likely that she knew the old stories better than he did, but she did not bother to say as much. No point in sounding needlessly arrogant. Regardless, she did not disagree with him. The wolves would have to be stopped when they came back.

At his next comment, she directed her gaze at the adviser in question. Rumors abound concerning the man. Whether he was spirit or human remained to be seen, but it would be nice if he really were on their side. A gusty sigh escaped her. If only it were that easy. Theron was correct. There was no guarantee that the queen's new adviser was now or would remain true to their cause. Still...

"I will reserve judgment on him," she said. "I don't suppose you've any suggestions in the way of trustworthy allies? Else we'll simply have to make do with the likes of him and all of these revelers here. Assuming any of them prove capable."

Theron distrusted him on principle. A mysterious stranger, who appeared out of nowhere at the Queen's side, who seemed to know more than anyone else about what was to come, and who didn't seem inclined to share? There was definitely something fishy about him.

He grimaced slightly at the query. "No. I keep to myself, mostly. Politics isn't my game -- too many secrets and too much maneuvering. I have no patience for that." No, his strengths were more martial in nature. Even though he was a hunter, not a mercenary, living alone in the wilds meant he sometimes had to defend himself.

Frowning, he looked out over the crowd of revelers, finding the ones with Guardians at their size and assessing them. "Few here look like soldiers, at that. They'll need training if they're to survive, much less defend others." And, as much as he disliked having to spend too much time with strangers, he knew he wouldn't be able to stay away if they needed help. Not without a certain white doe glaring balefully at him until he caved, at least. It was better to just n** the problem in the bud and sign up early.

Allison's frown deepened. "I imagine you are correct." After all, most of the Chosen she had met - or rather, those who had stumbled upon her doorstep fresh from the Ward Tree - seemed to be less than warrior material. To be fair, they had all just had quite a shock when she became acquainted with them, but the early indications were less than promising. Perhaps the Chosen would mature into more competent individuals.

"If this is to be the queen's new headquarters for the Chosen, then I imagine they will receive all the training that they could hope for. Out of all of them, I suppose at least a few Chosen are soldiers."

Surely a few would be capable of teaching others the arts needed to fight the wolves.
