Me and Starshine again razz

Starshine has an entire bedroom to himself, generally, where we keep him when no one his home (to avoid him getting in any mischief). I've noticed that he has been scratching and chewing on the door. He does this when he wants attention and we're busy (cooking, cleaning, etc.) or even when the door is open, he likes to chew on it.

What can I do to keep him from damaging the door while also making sure he doesn't get afraid of the room itself?

Make scratching at the door unappealing - double-sided tape, taping bubble-wrap or something pokey to the area he scratches, maybe an unpleasant sound that's only triggered when he's scratching, not when the door moves.

Provide him with a suitable scratching outlet (post) beside the door (if you don't have floor space for one, make one you can hang on the wall); you could try one that goes on the door, but just make sure he picks up on the difference of acceptable surfaces.

Bubble wrap! That's a great idea, there's a surplus of it at work.

There's also cat repellent. We bought a herbal one that we squirt one the corners of the couch when Tansy decides to forget (again) that there's a scratching post to scratch on. smile

We keep it closed when no one's home so he doesn't get into mischief and we're not here to help him.

Actually, to update, I've realized the problem isn't him scratching at the door when it's closed... it's him biting the door when it's open!

O_o Well now....thats a completely a different issue.

How old is he? I would try a combo of lemon and water in a spritzer and spray the door. Make it as bitter as you can and he will hate the taste of it.

Make the door unappealing and maybe offer him some suitable hard chews (raw meaty bones, a cardboard box [as long as he's not ingesting bits of it], softer hard dog treats, etc..) or something suitable that he can chew on. Wouldn't hurt to have his teeth checked by a vet just to make sure he doesn't have an issue in there.
