Ch'nda gave a sigh. Finally, she had found the archives. their first day at the prison had been spent helping the weyrlings settle in, and now Ch'nda needed to get down to business. From what she had learned, this wasn't the first time an odd dragon had hatched. Now, it had been the first time so many had hatched--there had only been one other atypical dragon born in the entirety of history before this. Ruth. A tiny white dragon, everyone knew. She still had more research to do, but she believed that the situations must have been similar. Perhaps the dragons weren't even mutations. It was probable that the sire blue had carried genes that no bronze had--the woman made note to ask permission to run a similar experiment with firelizards. At least that way she would be able to rule out whether this was a natural occurrence or true mutation. She shook her head, chewing on her thoughts with the same fervor canines chewed bones. The sheer number of atypical dragons born led her to believe that it was connected to the genes, rather than mutation. Mutations were terribly rare--again, there had only been one in history. To have, what, five in one clutch? Another complication was the crippled gold. If the genes had come from her, then the results would be much harder to replicate. The woman's grey eyes landed on a red-haired man, one of the new weyrlings if she was not mistaken.
You're so obsessive. We're in a new place, with new people. Dragons the like of which have never existed on pern before, and here You are, cramming yourself into books.
The rider rolled her eyes. I need to be informed. Ruth's the closest thing to these dragons we have ever seen. He'll be the only creature that could give us clues as to what they might be like. Now hush. I'm busy. Her eyes had remained on the red haired man, and now that Reth had quieted she walked over with clipped steps. She stood before him with a soldier's posture, expression detached and tone hard. "DragonWatch Officer Ch'nda of Blue Reth." She paused a moment, looking the man and his posture up and down for a moment. "I request access to your archives, and all the information you have on the dragon Ruth."

J'in had settled somewhat into his new life. It help that Irath was constant warm presence in his mind if chatty and J'in was nearly completely sure that C'ap wouldn't mind him bringing Irath into the archives. Irath had promised to behave, chattering away and the little grey was chattering now, as they walked through the hallways. A wing from the dragonwatch was at the Weyr and he was going to take them as a guarantee of good behavior on the part of M'onk.

Irath said cheerfully, prancing at his bond partner's side through the hallways. His brother had thrown a party and certainly they could think of something just good. Ooh, hi there pretty lady. Irath chirped, trotting up to nudge and press against Ch'nda legs like a content cat. He questioned lightly, weaving about.

J'in paused in his first reaction, swallowing down the snappy words at the harsh tone. "Are you sure you want all the information?" He asked, somewhat between gleeful - there was a lot of works that mentioned Ruth only in passing. He would be pleased to surround her in works with just fleeting sentences since she ordered it- and mild annoyance at the fact she couldn't narrow down a topic. While the image was amusing it would be way too much work to gathered every novel that had a mention of the white dragon.

"A lot of literature mentions Ruth and Jaxon in passing but do not go into great detail about the pair. It would help if you could give me a narrower search topic." J'in glanced at Irath, amusement bleeding between the bond. "He says thank you for your good timing."

Oh. My. Shards. It must be said that the blue, whenever apart from his bonded, never left her sight. Literally. Much to Ch'nda's annoyance, Reth was almost always peeking through her vision, never giving her a moment's peace. The dragon washed a wave of I love you too over his rider before continuing, Isn't he just adorable?!

If Reth had gotten things his way, she'd have picked up the baby, cradled the little sweetling in her arms and crooned over how cute he was. Ch'nda bent down, and took a firm but gentle hold on the little grey's face, and next a wing. "I am mainly interested in Ruth's capabilities, physiology, and development." She said as she lifted the hatchling's tail to it's legnth. With out another word, she dropped the babe's tail and stood. She looked down at the friendly grey with an almost quizzical expression as his rider passed along the thanks. The woman paused for a brief moment before she spoke. "He has very good proportions. He will not be large, but with training he should be nimble." The 'complement' came in the same stilted and clipped speech as before.
Darling, I love you, but you can't just use the 'SOLDIER SOLDIER YES SIR SOLDIER SIR YES SIR" dialect on regular people. The hatchling was nice. Now it's your turn to be nice back.
Did you not hear what I just said?
You looked him over like he was a herd beast. The little creature is probably terrified of you now.
Ch'nda sighed. She wanted to go home. Back to her office. Back to her routine.
Tell him he's pretty. He is a Darling little.. Oh never mind. You'll just make me sound like a jerk.
The dragon reached his mind out gingerly to the little hatchling, pulsing with warm adoration. Hello there, little guy! I am the blue, Reth! Don't mind Mine, she isn't too good with people. She means that you're built beautifully, and you look like you're gonna grow up to be strong and fast. The blue chuckled to himself, curled in the sun. And pass my apologies to your rider, she really does mean well.

Irath chirped cheerfully as the rider bent down, wanting cuddles and attention and wait. He clicked a few times in confusion as she gripped his face before preening and helpfully stretching out his wing and then tail. Why, yes. He was just a handsome little fellow and scratches maybe? Irath gave a soft chitter as he was looked over before prancing back to J'in and weaved in and out between his rider's legs.

What was she doing? J'in took a step, bristling in concern. Irath was not a lamb to be felt over before slaughter. It might have been the current fiasco with M'onk and the hatching that made him feel so overprotective but he wasn't feeling the upmost love for Ch'nda at the moment. Irath being unharmed was the only thing making him not snap at the watchrider as the grey wove in and out between his legs. Solid, warm, and at easy.

Focus. J'in took a breath, centering himself before replying "we do have plenty of information dealing with those topics. The healers and mindhealers have a lot of interests." His voice was rather clip, a bit cold, the displeasure with the random handling of his bond partner seeping in it. He took the lead, brushing past Ch'nda to enter the archives. "This way."

Irath paused in reassuring his bond partner to greet the new voice. Irath said, pleasure and warmth in his mind voice as he followed J'in into the archives. Irath chattered happily to Reth.

Ch'nda followed behind the redhaired man, chewing at a thought as her dragon seemed miraculously distracted. It was always such, but a baby before him and he'll be occupied for hours.
"I am gathering as much information on Ruth as I can. Learning more about him may give us some insight as to what the others might have truly resulted from, and how they might progress." She looked back down at the hatchling. "I had originally thought it might have resulted from the infirmity in their mother, but seeing your grey makes me think that is not the case." She observed the little creature for a moment longer. "His build is solid, and his nature seems to be excellent." She couldn't understand why they had caused such a ruckus. Sure, there had been a mauling on the sands, when hadn't there been? If she remembered right, Ai's gold had mauled quite a few people before the queen had impressed. The woman dropped the thought. She needed to stay impartial, to review the data that was there--not speculate on what she thought might be. Her mind shifted gears.
"Tell me about the Hatchling." She thought for a moment. He'd likely ask her to be more specific. "I would like to hear what happened from your view point. What caused the ammount of chaos we experienced upon our arrival?" The woman followed behind, watching the young man's body language for any clues he might give as he spoke.

Oh yes! I had an entire herdbeast all to my self--fresh and warm. It was delicious. And oh shards, you have no idea. Always rigid like a good little soldier. The dragon sighed, rolling his eyes. ...But she really is a kind, nice person once you get to know her. Don't tell her I told you, but she's researching Ruth to try and prove that you little ones are going to grow up great. She still wants to try and convince herself that she can look at things objectively. The dragon paused and pulsed a wave of love to his rider. And don't worry. If anyone can use books to figure something out, it's Ch'nda. The dragon was all too happy to chat along with the babe, both his love for conversation and weakness for babies happily satisfied.

J'in lead Ch'nda pass the first few stacks of books silently, heading towards the left and the section on dragons between the mind healers and physical healing journals. "Others?" he muttered, slightly annoyed at the distance in the word. Irath was a hatchling like any of the greens, blues, and sole brown that had hatched. He was healthy and perfect and liable to get him disowned when his parents got word. If they got word.

He smiled slightly at the comment of Irath build and nature though it came across as mechanical and paused as they went passed a other shelf of books at the request. "I don't know if I should be the person you should be talking to," J'in said quietly, hands leaving to tug at his sleeve in unease. "I'm just a scribe."

Irath peered about the books, sniffing at shelves and tomes breathing in the mix of leather, paper, ink, and faintly of his person and others. Irath pranced about in his bond partner's shadow. and he stopped in mid thought, pressing against J'in leg in concern. < Her dragon is nice, mine. You should talk to her.> Having delivered his message he switched back to Reth.

Ch'nda's expression turned puzzled, bordering on skeptical. Did the young man really think himself so unimportant? "You are not just a scribe. You are a dragonrider. Furthermore, You are one of the first people--one of the first two people in the entire history of Pern to impress a gray dragon." The woman paused a moment, watching the little gray dragon with a steady gaze with an ever slight tinge of a smile. So maybe the babe was cute. She wasn't stone, albeit the woman seemed damned close. Her steady gaze switched back to J'in. "The whole of pern will know your name."

The watchmember took a book in her hands, skimming over the words. "Any information you can give me," The woman continued without looking up from the page, "No matter how inconsequential you may think the detail, will be valuable in our investigation." Her eyebrows furrowed as she glimpsed a particular piece of information. Ch'nda withdrew a small journal from her pocket, scrawling a short note. It was a small detail, one that she needed to verify in other texts before she could take it for truth, but something like this... Ch'nda looked back to J'in, she could review the texts later. "Now please, the hatching?"

Reth half trilled, delighted with the hatchling. Well, little one, Ruth was a white dragon from long ago. It is said that his shell was too thick, and when all the rest of his siblings had hatched, little Ruth still had not. The blue stretched in the sunlight, these warm and lazy days were certainly something he wouldn't complain about. It was not until Ruth's bonded broke open the shell himself that the little dragon emerged. He was pale, pale white, and very tiny--Just like you! His thoughts were cheerful and bright. He would have to remember to drag Ch'nda out into the sunlight again before they returned home. The blue wanted to meet as many of the babes as he could, especially if they were as adorable as this one!

J'in held down the bitter laughter, closing his eyes for a moment, head tipped back for a few seconds before shaking his head. "So, the books." He said finally, slipping away him the watch member and deep into a aisle of books. He stroke his fingers over the leather bound spines, pulling a large heavy volume down. It was worn, the pages crumpled from much use. "This should be a good starting point in your research."

Irath chirped and gave a shocked noise as he felt cut off. The little grey chattered as he raced after his bond partner and headbutted J'in's legs. He chattered loud and high, tugging on his bond partner clothing.

J'in paused in reaching for a second slimmer volume, shock running through his mind before relaxing, reaching out for the little grey. 'I... sorry Irath. I didn't mean to cut you off.' He hadn't been aware he even could. He added the small volume to the larger and knelt. "I think these two would be a start on physiology and development. I think the best for capability would be in the historical section." He reached over, slowly stroking Irath's head, books resting on his knees.
