I just got back from a trip to Virginia. While I was there, I was given an old viola by an elderly lady who was impressed by my (violin) playing. She knew it was probably worth some money, but she gave it to me any way. She said she just wanted to see it played again. It has a minor crack (fixable), and the sound post needs re-inserted (no problem at all). I need help, as I have hardly any knowledge of violas. I'm hoping that one of you could give me some info about the brand/style.
It is clearly marked on the inside. It says "Scherl & Roth Inc., Cleveland, OH. Jacobus Hornsteiner--Antonio Stradivari reproduction. Shop adjusted. Model #--E29. Serial #--7-202. Date--1/57.
Any fact about anything here would be appreciated. Thanks!
I plan to get the viola fixed. I tensioned the strings just enough to give a representation of the note (like an octave low), so as not to put too much pressure on the unsupported belly, but to hear its voice. It absolutely sings.

um...I measured the corpus, it's about 16 inches, I think. I'll check it tomorrow (at a reasonable hour, lol). I'll give you complete measurements.
