Whatever you would like to call it, I'm curious. Ok so I've been reading on and off Her Hidden Children by Chas S Clifton for an essay I'm writing and I got to the part where he talks about Drawing down the Moon. So I'm wondering if anyone's willing and able to share some experiences here or in a PM or could offer advice for someone wanting to look more into it and possibly try it some day.

Drawing Down the Moon in Wicca is a state of trance possession; typically only a coven's high priestess is capable of doing so. It involves a great deal of training and skill, and it is only done as part of coven rites. It's not something meant to be undertaken by anyone solo, as the High Priestess offers herself as the vessel for the Goddess to communicate to her children face to face.

I think a lot of trance possession is the same way. Takes a lot of practice and skill, isn't for everyone, and shouldn't be attempted alone. Best bet - find a group that already does invocation rituals. Attend a couple to get a feel for what it's like to participate in one (it is a lot of intensive preparation and teamwork), and then perhaps you can start working on becoming a vessel for deity with them.

Thanks Morg. Sounds like another trip to the only shop in the area I'll actually step foot in to see if they know of any groups. Maybe when I have some extra cash I'll venture farther out on one of my days off.

The group I work with does a lot of possession work in a Voodoo framework, And I'll agree that it's not something to be attempted lightly or alone. There are also different types and levels of possession. For example, invoking or aspecting are terms that are sometimes used for a lighter form. I've heard it described in terms of driving a car before. Sometimes the deity or spirit is more a passenger and sometime they're driving the car. In some cases you're locked in the trunk. Also where are you located?

I'm also going to mention that possession isn't for everyone. I know people who experience it as among the strongest and most meaningful connections with deity they ever experience and others who only experience the physical aftermath which can be rather unpleasant, depending on what happened. Some have significant trauma connected to it and some, like myself, have no interest in the experiencing it personally.

Didn't "The Witches' God" recommend getting someone to be possessed by Loki and then putting Him on trial for His misdeeds? Or was that more of an "aspecting" thing?

???
That sounds kind of silly. Who would think that was a good idea?

Oh, I can't remember now. (I must say that about a hundred times a day, anymore. >_<)
I also think that'd be utterly daft. What would the point be?

DDTM is usually more like aspecting, depending on the level of trance the High Priestess allows
herself to enter. As Raven said, this kinda work can be as light as merely sharing your body with a spirit who allows you awareness and control of your physical self, and other times you're not even aware of what they are doing in your body; your awareness and control has been completely put aside for them.

Sometimes you can get moved out of yourself completely by an external force, so there's some training involved in not letting it happen involuntarily. Likewise, a full possessory experience can be prepared for by a trained priestess of the Wica; it takes a lot of work and co-ordination, but you can learn to voluntarily empty your body to be a vessel for deity.

Some people have a knack for being 'horsed'. Others, not at all.

I don't think it's the sort of thing I'd be very good at. I struggle with letting men lead when dancing.

Me too San. That's why I'm an observer and possessed person wrangler at the things I attend.

'Posessed person wrangler' sounds like an interesting job...

Basically, you make sure they've got what they want/need and try to keep people from doing something monumentally stupid (like trying to exorcize Set stare ), and then trying to catch them after they come out of it. They often fall down hard.

Yeah. It did not go well. He misinterpreted the situation and fell back on his catholic upbringing. Made Set laugh a bit, but not in a good way. Now such rituals are much more private affairs. Another way to control such situations is to limit attendance.

Yeah I'd imagine they would.
