Potato hadn't lied about the flay at the new warren. Parsnip had grown a great deal in a short amount of time, hitting his full growth. He'd grown a lot emotionally as well, but he still felt like an outskirter pretending to be an adult. He missed his old warren, he missed his brothers, he missed his marli, he missed his friends... it hurt. No matter how he tried to justify it (the flay, the empty burrows, the lowered expectations for bucks), he knew that leaving Watership Down had been a stupid decision. He'd only had a hlessi's word that there was another warren, or that the warren was any safer or better than Watership Down. He'd risked a great deal and, worse yet, he'd dragged Mudslide in to it as well.
He couldn't change the past. He wasn't even sure he wanted to. But he could tend to the present and he could make amends. The way he saw it, he had a clear and present responsibility to look after his brother and keep him safe. As well as he could, given that they were bucks.
He nibbled at some silflay, ears high and alert for danger. He'd asked his brother to meet him outside so that they could talk, hopefully he would join him soon.

When Mudslide had originally joined the warren he had been little more than a terrible outskirter, clinging to his brothers fur like a lifeline. As time had passed, that rabbit had disappeared, and in his place was a fully grown buck who took orders with the best of them. As much as he missed his marli, his friends, he couldn't deny how he'd flourished. While he still made mistakes, they weren't as close together, and he'd come far in his runner's training. Leaving had been difficult, but in the end it was the greatest decision he'd ever made! Maybe now he could make something out of himself instead of having to rely on Parsnip for everything.
When he spotted his brother, his already chipper mood brightened, and he made a beeline for the other buck. "I'd put that down if I were you, Parsnip. You're getting a little soft around the edges."
