Get the most of of your games:
Before the countdown of every game, tap the tank to center the fish and prevent them from moving around to much. This works on all the best/most popular fish like dolphins, airsharks, stone coatls and mermaids.
The first 5 players of every game gets a 500 gold bonus, this mean even a single hermit cat glowing can be worth the effort if you get in early.
Good ways to get people to notice your tank:
Colorful bumping. Bump with a bumper rather than text. Your bumps will be noticed more and if people remember you they're more likely to choose your tank in the aquarium forum.
Multiple bumping. If you bump a glow more than once the tank owners will notice your effort and when they catch your glow there's a big change they return the favor with interest.
Bump prior to your glow. By doing this your tank will be recently posted and people looking for glows and tank owners checking their threads after their glows might notice your glow. Most tank owners return the favor of bumping when they find a glow in their bump threads.
Post in popular glow threads. (To be clear, with glow thread I mean a topic with many tanks gathered in one place, there are two kinds, text based and tanks posted.) If the glow thread have tanks posted, go through a few pages and quote the post of anyone glowing and post in their bump threads as well. This result in two things, the tank owner will notice both your posts, so it's multiple bumping and if they are online they will be extra happy you made an effort to notify them that they were glowing or if they are offline they will check the quote and there's always a chance you glow then.
You can also bump these glow threads prior to your own glow to increase the chance of anyone noticing your glow.
Promote your tank with your signature. Most tank owners have a bump thread link in their signature, any serious tank owner should have one since people usually don't bother with finding your bump thread if you don't link to it.
Less bumps equals less gold for you.
A glow timer is also effective to have. Some (like me) do bump before grabbing but if we can't tell how long the glows been going we don't take any chances and grab first.
Earlier bumps equals more players and more gold for you.
Got limited time for BG?:
1. Keep a tank with either lawnshark, alpha gram, lightning bug or lacebacks and you wouldn't need many players at all to earn back the gold.
2. Keep a stalker thread with tank owners that bump your glow, if you bump them they will bump you back at some point when you're not online.
3. Consider making your tank a weekend tank. You can have a low-trigger tank in weekdays and your better fish frozen and put them in during weekends when you don't have school/work. (If you chose this please let me know so I don't move your tank around in the text thread. )
Other than that, keeping up the bumping whenever you can is usually the best way to go about it.
