This is a private roleplay between 8-BIT (Vasquez Vasquez) and Auspex (Arvid Adler).

Where: training grounds - the track
When: mid-afternoon
What's happening: Two students, both short a roommate, run into each other (maybe not literally) at the track.

Of the many things Arvid had hoped to achieve in his first weeks at Sidekick Academy, setting the record for highest roommate turnover was decidedly not on the list. It seemed like he was well on his way to achieving just that, though.

His first roommate, a younger Ronth shapeshifter whose power turned him sporadically into a small gray mouse, was understandably leery of living in the company of his natural predators. Another had discovered, three days after moving in, that the sneezing and watery eyes he'd put down to a recent cold were actually symptoms of bird allergies. They had all parted ways amiably enough, but Arvid's optimism was already wearing thin by the third iteration of the same old song and dance.

The housing office had decided (after some convincing) that they might as well let him keep the room and take care of his rooming issues on his own. He'd also convinced the friendly lady at the desk this afternoon to give him a sheet with the names of male students without an assigned roommate. Names didn't much help his search when the students were still relatively unknown at the school, but it was better than nothing.

In any case, Arvid folded the sheet and pocketed it. His quest could wait. He needed some fresh air, some exercise, something to keep his mind off his housing debacle.

The track at the training grounds was perfect, even with a certain opinionated falcon flying lazily overhead to make desultory comments about how abominably slow all these humans were. There were barely a handful of students there today, leaving plenty of room even for the one guy floating along on a wobbly path that straddled two lanes. Best keep an eye on that one. Best keep an eye on everyone, really, Arvid thought to himself as he started a warm-up jog in the outermost lane.

Vasquez Vasquez chewed his lip after passing for a fourth jog on the track field's innermost lane. Saliva pooled where his mouth lacked hydration, and his feet riled up dust whenever he landed and launched them ahead. He loved mobile moments like these in which the beating of his heart and headphones were one, and he loved how infinite his body felt. The track itself was built in a locked loop, and the track team member's, too, felt unending as they ran it. Running felt differently in real life than in (most) video games, and it was one of the rare feelings that reality made special. Vasquez would have laughed if he felt that he could. As a slight introvert, he did not like how there were other bodies present. He would normally have chosen the outtermost lane. It was the better lane. The best lane. The one closest to the fountains. The one where he could most conveniently watch his competitors race if he fancied doing so.

With a fixed glare, the armed arcade swerved out of the innermost lane at an accelerated speed. He passed the middle lanes while wiping damp sweat from his forehead, and before his feet could slow into a trot, his feet--and everything around them--became a clumsy blur as he threw his arms in front of his face to avoid injury from whatever body he was colliding into---

Those footsteps were getting awfully close awfully fast, weren't they? The ensuing collision promptly knocked further speculation right out of Arvid's mind. He had a vague impression of a flurry of hands before the impact sent him veering off the track altogether.

Though wobbling steps kept him upright for a few seconds more, he was too far off-balance. There was nothing for it but to surrender to gravity. Head up, knees bent, palms slapped against the ground -- the painful jolt of falling forward ran through his lanky arms and legs. Still, he managed to keep the damage to a minimum. It was victory enough for him, here and now. He really needed to work on his reflexes, he thought glumly as he picked himself up gingerly and rubbed at aching elbows and knees.

Now to see how the other runner was faring. "No lasting harm done, I hope?" Arvid asked, too worried to hide it under his usual show of confidence. He offered a hand to help the other boy up, if he felt like taking it. An old injunction to say nice things when in doubt chose this moment to rear its head and prompt him to put in a compliment, apropos of nothing: "You run very fast." Then it was silence, just barely long enough for him to kick himself mentally for that faux pas, before he followed up his inquiries with a more composed, "What happened back there, exactly?"
