So, someone is doing something they shouldn't. I'm not entirely sure who, but it's either Tansy Patch or Minstrel, decidedly not a kitten.
In a moment of complete disclosure, we have recently swapped all the litterboxes over from open to covered, but the problem started before we did that. We have the same amount of litterboxes, they're in the same place, but now Minstrel doesn't miss and send things over the side anymore!
Anyway, the litterbox in our main bathroom, every now and again... I don't think it's as much as everyday, but it wouldn't be more than every second day, someone will go to the toilet about half a metre to the side of the box. It started when they were all going through a bout of horrible diarrhoea, so we'd have to clean up a sloppy pile of grossness off the bathroom tiles (I admit, I'm mainly just happy they're not doing this with the one litterbox that is on the carpet), but it's continued.
The main problem is that it's intermittent. I don't know how to deal with someone that uses the box normally most of the time, and then doesn't. We're going to pull in one of the open boxes today and set it up where they go, in the hope that they'll then go in the box instead of the floor, but it feels like a temporary solution.
Does anyone have any words of wisdom about this?

If you're just having issues with missing, you could try something higher-sided but still open-topped.

Hmm.. the only thing I can think of is maybe moving the litterbox over to the spot where the accidents happen. Other than that, I dunno.

STERALITE CONTAINERS. I kid you not. Both of my kitties are big, and we elimated the expsensive plastic box a couple of weeks ago. Basically go to your nearest department store, and buy a storage container.
This will work with the bigger cats, but not for the kittens.
And you wanna know who it is? Detective work. Feed each of the bigger kitties a bit of food coloring with some irristable wet food (its not harmful) but make sure you use 2 different colors. Remember who gets what color.
And when they poop, you can determine whose the culprit. biggrin

I wish I'd remembered it before I got the covered ones, as there's still a doorway that missing can happen in. *sigh* Oh well, at least it's working better than it did.
And that food dye is a brilliant idea! I'm so going to try that... probably tomorrow night, as they've already been fed tonight and I'm not so good at complex operations first thing in the morning.
I suppose if I can work out who's doing I might be able to... actually, I still don't really know what to do. Someone who always missed, I think I could work with, but someone who knows what to do most of the time and then randomly decides to ignore it? That's a tricky one.

I know how you feel. D: Loki had poopy butt yesterday and left spots all over the apt from when he would sit. I only know it was him because Freyja already went poop for the day and he had some diareah.. Once you figure out who it is, you can feed them pumpkin, which will help with the diahreah. biggrin (It helps stiffen ther poops. And it also helps constipation). And you could always just get the storage containers and donate the covered boxes. (You volunteer at a rescue and boxes may always be welcome).

The babies don't always clean themselves as well as I would hope... I guess they'll learn that!
I'm thinking we might be able to cross Minstrel off the list of suspects! We'll still do the food dye thing though, just in case there's more than one person doing it! But, anyway, there's a mattress in the spare room (covered in plastic) but lying on the floor so the kittens couldn't squish themselves with it. We shut the babies in there by themselves last night, at about 4am Tansy demanded to go in there too and, when I let them out this morning, someone had gone to the toilet on the mattress plastic. So I guess the size and opportunity narrows it down to Tans, but food dye will still be happening.
That's really weird. I'd heard of the pumpkin thing before, but thought it was more for constipation... and I just went searching and it turns out you're right! I didn't know it could be used both ways... so when we go shopping today, I'll grab some pumpkin!
And good point about the boxes. Might need to hold off for a bit though, until the kittens are bigger. Or Nightshade is bigger, anyway. Because they all use all litter boxes, so if I change to something they can't just pop into...
