The Office assigned to Squad 9. The Captain and Lieutenant complete paperwork and attend to editing the Seireitei Monthly within this room.

There are two desks in the room, the Captain's desk facing the main doorway, and the Lieutenants desk towards the right.

Usually one will find large stacks of paperwork piled on both desks, though the Captain's desk usually has less stacks of paper than the Lieutenant's desk.

The office is connected to the larger editing/printing room (Editing Department) where the other members of Squad 9 work. The two rooms are separated by two sliding doors.

The office is rather large, and has a pair of two doors on the opposite side of the room, which lead to the Captain's and Lieutenant's bedchambers.

Most of the walls are covered in bookshelves, which contain either past issued magazines that were printed, or simple reading books.

The 9th Division symbol is printed directly behind the Captain's desk on a bare wall.

Raine has adorned the room with various red and green gold-trimmed curtains stretching across the ceiling like an elegant canopy, etched with designs of dragons and other Japanese oriented-patterns.

Ruka Kusabana

Captain of Squad 9

It was early but not too early, the squad was noisy but not too noisy and the tea was scalding hot upon her tongue. Ruka could say she was having a very good morning.

                                  Except...

                                  "I'm going to kill him..."

With her arms crossed and a vaguely intimidating aura more suitable for someone of a far greater stature the woman regarded the paperwork piled upon her Lieutenant's desk with sheer irritation. Honestly they were three days away from their deadline and he hadn't worked on any of these reports? God give her patience if Kukaku didn't kill him before she did...

But that had been about ten minutes ago so now she was seated at her desk looking at an assortment of reports and articles. Both were separated neatly into two different stacks on her desk and were rising higher by the minute. To her good fortune today the reports mostly only required signatures and were more on trivial matters than anything troubling. Although there were a few she set aside to look at again later. Some patrol reports seemed a little more urgent than usual.

Sighing she tucked a stray bang behind her ear before reaching for her steaming cup of tea her eyes flying across papers as she scanned the pages before her for any errors. That was the trouble with being Squad 9- they got all the spelling and grammar checking for the other squads as well.

"Someone should make Byakuya's classes mandatory." she muttered into her cup her eyes narrowing at a particularly annoying mess of scribbles that constituted as 'writing' "Ugh this is bad. Even Zaraki wrote better than this. And the man never picked up a pen unless he absolutely had to...hm?"

The envelope sitting in her stack of papers was all at once unexpected and familiar. The quality of the paper gave away what she already knew as she took it and delicately retrieved the letter from its container and set down her tea cup. Chin cupped in one hand and with a warm smile on her lips the brunette read the message telling of stories and a variety of exploits and 'come visit soon, Ruka, or we'll have to ask Jidanbo to come get you!'.

Yes, she was having a good day.

Nyhil Dakkar
- - Captain of Squad Twelve - -

(entering from the General Grounds of Squad 9)

A moment after Raine called that he was present and opened the door Nyhil walked inside ahead of the Lieutenant. His gaze shifting over Ruka shortly, blinking once before he met her eyes and offered a genuine smile while his quiet steps brought him closer. "Captain Kusabana, a pleasure to see you again I hope you are well?"

"I have a certain amount of free time that I lacked until recently and if you are not otherwise engaged I had a proposition I wished to discuss with you." Nyhil had an odd sort of politeness, while his words were very polite he was looking over her desk and office as opposed to Ruka. Nyhil was noting a variety of things, filing away details of windows, doors, furniture, the various papers and nicknacks that covered the room. "Your Lieutenant was gracious enough to offer tea, and I consider myself a bit of a conisour of the beverage."

Once he had finished his other notes of the room his gaze returned to Ruka, this time unblinking. He was noting her body language, any shifts from the relaxed muscles and slight smile she'd worn upon their entrance. Then the small crinkle around her eye proved that her happiness had been genuine, he was curious if such a thing would have vanished. (proving a lack of genuine happiness in a smile) His stare was intense, the lack of blinking with his red gaze only seemed to make them more unnatural. He was apparently going to stare quietly until he got an answer.

"Oh of course, I don't mind if you watch as I fight. There are a few techniques that I'd ask not to be recorded- but they're not relevant to my zanpakuto so you needn't worry." Raine watched the Nyhil walk past. Raine's eyes suddenly flickered over to the pile of papers on his desk. His mind soon flooded with possible excuses he could provide that would probably cover up his reasons for not doing it. He figured settling for the truth this time around wouldn't hurt. "Why hello Taicho... I'll get to my paperwork in a moment. I'm going to prepare Dakkar-Taicho some tea in the meanwhile. I was out late last night preparing the house for the festival that we're hosting in a few days. I didn't want to risk getting myself killed by Oba-sama... I felt like I could cope better with your reprimands." He quickly moved over to the coffee table, where it seemed the steaming water had already been prepared. "Oh... I see you've already had a cup." Raine observed as he poured a cup of the tea for both himself and Nyhil. He offered the steaming cup to the red-eyed Captain. "For you... this is one of the blends that we usually prefer for the morning. It's a tad minty- to help wake you up and refresh the mind for the day." The subtle scent of mint drifted into the air.

Raine walked over to his own desk, taking a seat and looking through a few of the papers- allowing the Captains time to talk amongst themselves without his interruption. He looked up at the first paper and his eyes widened. The handwriting was not far from chicken scratch. It seemed that whomever had been writing these reports clearly did not grasp the basic concepts of handwriting in Kindergarten.
"Good god... Squad 11 must've been writing these reports or something... I can barely make out if that word says 'hear' or 'bear'..... is it 'near', maybe?" Raine squinted as he looked over the paper, muttering several silent curses of annoyance.

Ruka Kusabana

Captain of Squad 9

                                  "I'm here~!"

"You're late." came Ruka's flat reply. Though her tone expressed displeasure the little smile and the rare softness in her eyes said otherwise. She sighed and lifted her head from her hand her eyes flicking to the doorway "You're lucky I'm in a good mood else I'd..."

Her voice trailed off the woman blinking slightly at the stranger in the doorway. Her mind struggled to place him for a moment before he stepped into the office proper and she could see him clearly. Nyhil. The woman stared openly for a moment a bit stunned by the man's sudden appearance. Of course she knew Nyhil Dakkar. Who didn't? If she hadn't run into him just by being a Captain she'd have known him by way of rumor. The vampire man to the lowest ranked and to those in more informed circles the soul who'd suffered as Mayuri's lab rat for countless years. However that knowledge did little to put her at ease when he gave her... odd looks. The thought made her surprise dwindle to nothing the tension that would indicate her briefly startled manner disappearing altogether although an eyebrow quirked up at his smile. It was strangely earnest and in her good mood she couldn't help but return the gesture shooting a cheerful grin.

"And it's a pleasure to see you again. I'm doing as well as I can be. What brings you here, Nyhil?" she folded the paper with care and slid it back inside its envelope. She retrieved a brown notebook from the folds of her robes, opening it briefly to slip the letter into its pages before snapping it shut not allowing a soul to see its contents. Just as quickly as it had appeared she hid it once more and sat up straight folding her hands on the desk in front of her.

Her eyes slid to Raine and there was a bit of amusement in her gaze knowing the emergence of the notebook alone would only serve to irritate him as she chastised him "This is one of the few times you're gonna be lucky I know Kukaku." she fired back, smirking faintly as she gave him a nod of thanks for retrieving the tea before she indicated the paperwork he was moving for "Have fun, Shiba boy." she called good-naturedly and returned her attention to Nyhil.

"Connoisseur eh? We'll see." she grinned a challenging light in her eyes. As much as the pair of them, Captain and Lieutenant, enjoyed traditional tea they also enjoyed much of what was available in the human world. This first blend was easy, but afterwards? Well, they'd see. With that in mind she gestured to a chair in front of her desk "I can spare some time. Please have a seat." she folded her hands beneath her chin giving the man a curious look as soon as he'd sat down "So what's up?"

Well she wasn't the most formal that was for sure.

Nyhil Dakkar
- - Captain of Squad Twelve - -

Raine dashed into a series of excuses as if he were a politician that had made a gaff, and his Captain seemed at first to be having little of it. There was a high percentage chance she was about to threaten him before she noticed Nyhil's presence. "What would you do to Lieutenant Raine if you were in a poor mood?" Unfinished sentences always made him curious,

Her attitude quickly altered and even warmed again, his own posture relaxed at the lack of much formal activity, he had little reason for it if someone didn't expect or desire him to act as such. In fact he preferred to be informal when the option was present. He nodded a little when she said it was a pleasure to see him, though it was more a subconscious nod to some thought than being a narcissist. "I had hoped with the recent lull of activity we could schedule a friendly spar or perhaps several between the various captain's and lieutenant's. There aren't many reapers in the squads that possess incredible experience. It could function as a learning experience for any onlookers of lower rank as well as give them something to take their attention off of any trouble making. A reminder of what their superiors are capable of might inspire good behavior. I imagine it would aid moral as well."

He pulled a small vial that was a deep red color from an inside pocket when Ruka brought him tea. The slight copperish scent of blood mingling into the scent of the tea only a short moment before he put away the now empty vial and stirred his tea. "It gives us a chance to get out and wield our abilities against opponents of appropriate strength and varied skills, leaving the squadrons stronger in general. I hoped to convince a few other captain's before bringing a petition before the Commander himself."

He took a sip of the blood spiked tea, his eyes half-lidded as he enjoyed the flavor, apparently the rumors as to his 'unique' sustenance requirements were completely true. Nyhil either didn't realize his odd tastes might bother others - or he didn't care.

Ruka Kusabana

Captain of Squad 9

"Probably punch him through a wall." she shrugged answering his question nonchalantly. She wasn't exactly known as the most peaceful of beings after all. Although... "Or I'd have a chat with Kukaku." she smirked.

The woman placed a finger on the rim of her teacup exerting minimal spiritual pressure to warm the liquid again. When she was satisfied she wrapped her fingers around the cup enjoying the faint burning sensation on the skin of her palms "A spar, eh? A tourney, even. That does sound like fun. Goodness knows it's been a while since I had a good fight." the last part was a jab aimed directly at Raine though she shot the Lieutenant a playful grin to soften the blow "I think Kuchiki'll agree everyone's gotten a little rusty. The last time that happened..."

Her voice trailed off green eyes distant for a moment as she reflected upon the war long since past. She shook herself back almost immediately the smile returning to her lips "Anyway it sounds good to me." something like fire glittered in her eyes a fierce, playful grin on her lips, a challenge "I look forward to sparring with you, Nyhil."

And perhaps a little bothered by the vial of blood but otherwise she was doing her best not to let it bother her. She was trying to remind herself that she'd known Captains with stranger habits but... it wasn't really working. Still at least she managed to keep a straight expression on her face. Well, a fierce one more like since the temptation of a fight had a way of overpowering any feeling of discomfort.

【After barely leafing through a few papers, Raine uttered a short sigh. The documents were so poorly filled out that it was giving Raine a headache to so much as look at them for another moment. His lips curdled into a grimace, and he fiddled with something in the folds of his kosode. A small green pill tumbled out from the fabric, which then snapped and began to grow rapidly. Various rubbery substances of differing colors merged together until it took the form of Raine- now there were two of him standing in the room. The replica blinked absentmindedly and gazed down upon the documents that Raine set before him. "Here- you do this... please."

Without a single argument, the gigai seated itself where Raine had once been and he began to leaf through the papers. Raine's expression shifted into one of satisfaction. He then returned to Nyhil's side, just as the shady Captain was gently trickling some red liquid into his cup. At the sound of Ruka's jab, Raine flashed her a playful glare.

"Oh please, my dear Captain. I couldn't bear the thought of hitting a fragile young lady such as yourself." He jested with a chuckle. He eased back into one of the chairs and eyed his cup to ensure none of the blood had found its way into the minty liquid.

"I look forward to the sparring as well." Raine remarked in agreement to his Captain. He didn't need to think very long to realize what was on her mind. The war had been a massive test of their strength. Never before had Raine found himself in such a predicament where he had come so close to death (aside from the few times he ticked off his aunt). He took a sip of his tea and allowed a moment for the mint to settle upon his tongue. The liquid singed the flesh of his mouth, and he downed the rest of the tea.

"Such a tournament would relieve us of any inter-squad tensions." Raine said as he refreshed his cup with another serving of tea. The scent was distinctly different. The subtle scent of strawberry and some other foreign spice tickled his nose. "Forgive my curiosity, Captain." Raine began, raising his hand as if to pardon himself. "But may I ask why you flavor your tea with blood? Like you, I find myself in constant pursuit of answers- regardless how appropriate the question may be."

Ruka was thinking it, Raine knew it. He would be bold enough to ask. If the Captain didn't wish to reply, then Raine would respect Nyhil's privacy.

Nyhil Dakkar
- - Captain of Squad Twelve - -

"It does seem unwise not to keep ourselves in prime physical condition given our duties." Nyhil stated in agreement, watching Ruka carefully as they spoke. Taking in even the smallest of her movements, making mental notes consistently as he watched mannerisms and habits of motion. His intense crimson gaze focused even as her own eyes were growing distant. He had been under 'lock and key' during the war and while he was curious given her swift alteration back to the topic at hand he could hypothesis she didn't wish to discuss the events of that time.

A vague grin came to his face at her acceptance; the pronounced canine's he possessed would make most people less than comfortable. His next comment didn't put any of the rumors about the man to rest. "I am delighted you agree. I anticipate our contest. I imagine it will be a delectable experience, Ruka."

For a moment those ruby orbs altered, there was a flash of predatory hunger...though the moment was fleeting. Instead his eyes were drawn by the appearance of a gigai. He raised the cup to his lips, taking a sip while watching the lieutenant assign the creature to his duties so he could join them and exchange banter with the captain.

"It could also function nicely as a team building exercise if we assign groups or draw random partners for larger group battles. Though I imagine that is aiming high when it has yet to be approved by the Commander." Nyhil remarked offhandedly, only focusing again when the matter of his tastes were brought up.

"I like the way it tastes Lieutenant. How rude of me, I didn't think most would share my pallet, I assume you'd like some? I have a few extra vials. Captain, would you as well? I have some that's been flavored." He asked as though he'd been lapse not to offer it sooner. Digging in a pocket for the small case he'd used before and producing a vial for the young man. Holding out the small vial, filled with the dark crimson liquid. It was cool to the touch, the small pouch he carried must have something to keep the blood from heating up too much or it wouldn't be drinkable...

【Raine gazed at the vial. The crimson liquid danced inside the glassy confines as Nyhil offered the blood.

"Ah no, I wouldn't dream of exhausting your supply of blood." Raine waved his hand politely, offering the Captain a grin. "-but thank you anyways. I must also admit- I've never accented the flavor of my tea with blood before. I'm not entirely sure if I am ready to try just yet." The thought of blood in his tea almost made Raine want to shudder. He already taste the coppery substance on his tongue- soiling the herbal flavors.

Raine's eyes studied Nyhil again, as if for the first time. He had heard legends of humans that drank blood. They lurked about at night and had skin as pale as the moon. He couldn't help but wonder if Nyhil was a vampire. Then his eyes lingered to the vial that was being offered to the Captain.

There was only one encounter where Raine could possibly ever imagine Ruka as being anything other than a shinigami. He had pulled a prank on her (the only successful one) when she had been asleep. She had awoken so abruptly- so furiously.

Terror had never presented itself like it had that night.

He barely emerged with any bones intact.

Raine didn't want to think on the image any more. There were reasons why he never woke his dear Captain again. If she was sleeping, he would leave her to rest and vacate the area.

Maybe... just maybe- his Captain was a vampire.

Raine dismissed the thought with a chuckle, and he sat back and wondered what Ruka might say on the matter.

Ruka Kusabana

Captain of Squad 9

Tension, that was the best way to describe it. Within her subconscious a terrible instinct rose telling her to flee and never return. It was fight or flight, the response chosen to defend one's life. Grown men quailed before it, it could bring an entire army to its knees if it so chose...

                                  And she ignored it.

Almost as fast as the response was made it was shut down completely. The captain took a calm sip of her tea and leveled the man before her with a simple smile. She would be honest with herself; Nyhil had a peculiar way of frightening her. To say the man was fairly inhuman at times was a vast understatement and the rumors that surrounded him did little to ease he fears. She ran a newspaper, therefore every scrap of information she gathered, rumor or not, was to be carefully analyzed and filtered until she held that one grain of truth in her hand. And what she had determined was that Nyhil was a force to be reckoned with and very, very dangerous.

But she was a warrior. Though she didn't remember where she came from or the family that she once had she knew battle was in her blood. Whatever challenge he presented she would face without fear. So instead of letting her alarm show she let herself grin back, fierce and sharp.

Her eyes flitted up when his attention left her falling upon her Lieutenant. She cocked an eyebrow at his use of a gigai but offered no complaint knowing how much of a pain it was going through this particular squad's work. Still if she had to go back to doing it by hand he would do it too so help her God.

"If by fragile you mean the time you broke your knuckles trying to hit me the first time we sparred using Hakuda, then you are fragile indeed." she smirked into her tea unable to help the jab. After she took a sip she glanced back to Nyhil "Nothing wrong with planning ahead." she grinned.

And then Raine brought up the question. Ruka restrained the urge to sigh shaking her head slightly when the vials were pulled out. The sight of blood didn't bother her but she had no plans of ingesting it. She'd ended up tasting plenty of her own as she learned her way in battle "No thank you. I'm not really a fan." she drawled leaning her chin in her palm. Least that was one rumor confirmed.

I am each beat within your heart from first to last
I'm your action without thought, I am the instinct born inside you
I'm the bones from which you drape,I am protective skin to hide you

One and then the next each declined, more politely than he had seen many in the past manage when he'd offered them the small collection he kept on his person. He shrugged lightly, not bothered or surprised by the refusal from either person. "I understand, my pallet is not quite common. If you change your minds at any time feel free to ask."

He tucked the velvet lined container back into an inner pocket and observed the continued exchange between the two. Should he expect this sort of reaction from a normal Captain/Lieutenant arrangement? He had yet to choose a Lieutenant, he wasn't certain he ever would. Most people had a hard time holding out in his presence for a long period of time and this didn't appear to be much of a different case. The signs were more obvious than reading someone's face - the quickened heartbeat when his comments made them nervous, the barest physical changes were as easy to read as someone's face to someone with his range of senses.

When Ruka grinned at him he returned the gesture, her intensity intrigued him, it was...adorable in it's own right. Not that he presumed she was not strong, all his research lead toward the opposite conclusion.

"You are a wholly unique and magnificent creature Ruka. At what time would it most convenience you to arrange the spar in question? I am able to alter my times as needed likely with more ease than is required by your duties." He switched from compliment to question with the same calm tone of voice. It wasn't sarcasm or any attempt to make jest, he appeared to admire her quite honestly but his comment was matter of fact. It was made and then moved right back along to the present subject as though he hadn't said anything more than 'nice hair cut'.

【Raine idly rubbed his thumb against the side of the teacup- making a barely audible noise as he watched the exchange between the two Captains. He couldn't entirely tell what Nyhil was playing at when he complimented Ruka so. Flattery was not one of the few things that could get to his Captain's heart. He knew this much.

"Ah-! Before we arrange such an appointment..." Raine cut in before Ruka could offer a response. "I would like to make it known that there is going to be a party at the Shiba Manor this weekend. It would honor me if you could make it." He aimed his attention to Nyhil, knowing well that Ruka would already be attending the event. "All are welcome to come, and the only thing I require of you is that you dress in nice semi-formal attire."

He stood up from his chair, setting the cup onto the coffee table before him. Gliding over to his desk where his doppleganger was still scribbling furiously on some of the documents, Raine pulled out a little scroll that was tied up in a deep red twine. He walked back over to Nyhil's side and offered the scroll to the Captain. "For you- the formal invitation."

Let your colors burn and brightly burst
Into a million sparks that all disperse
And illuminate a world that will try to bring you down
- but not this time....

Ruka Kusabana

Captain of Squad 9

Ruka blinked attempting to register the compliment (which had flitted by so fast one would think the man had been taking tips from Byakuya). After a moment she chuckled shaking her head slightly as she set down her now empty cup of tea "Um.. thank you?" she gave a faint smile cocking an eyebrow as though amused. Admittedly she was a bit startled but she'd dealt with enough rapid or hidden compliments (many which Raine had attempted in the past to avoid penalty as well) that she could adjust accordingly.

The brunette gave pause watching the interaction between Raine and Nyhil as he invited the other Captain to Kukaku's birthday. She smiled again, this time a little wider as she thought of her friend. The circumstances that had led up to their meeting were a little uncomfortable but had, in the end, been far better than that of little Rukia's. It was fun knowing someone who could match her in temper and power when the need arose. Albeit sometimes she drank a little more than was necessary and offered her sake -though she'd repeatedly told her that she just did not like it- but, hey, that was part of having friends. Gotta love em either way.

She waited until they were done before addressing Nyhil again "Well we have a lot of paperwork to attend to today..." she stood up and grabbed Suzaku before shooting the man a grin "But considering Raine was late I'm sure he wouldn't mind looking after this for a bit. Are you up for it?"

She shot Raine a quiet look faintly glittering with mischief and amusement as she mentioned his tardiness. Yes she was in a good mood, no she would not refrain from exacting her revenge. Well... there was a loophole she was allowing him today, if only because the batch of work they'd gotten today was absolutely horrific to read.

Don't give me those looks! We can finish this!

Nyhil Dakkar
- - Captain of Squad Twelve - -

The sudden interruption by the lieutenant caused Nyhil to cant his head a half inch to the left as he listened to the man's invitation. Was the event the sole cause of the interruption, it seemed suspiciously timed given his compliment's to Ruka. Perhaps the two of them had some deeper relationship and he'd someone made it uncomfortable for the lower ranking member? Or the younger man had a crush on his superior? They seemed friendly enough. It was quite possible. “Was my observation disturbing to you in some way? I would not wish to get in the way if you had plans to court your captain.”

His tone was perfectly polite, though the bluntness of his question and statements would make most people hesitate to know what it was he could be thinking. Nyhil then moved on to the other request, in the same way he'd jumped right to the next topic at hand with Ruka a moment before. It was just his way.

Nyhil had heard rumor as to something involving the Shiba household but hadn't paid it any direct attention until now. This must have been what other members of the squad were talking about. He nodded when Raine's comments were finished. “Yes I can clear my schedule to accommodate appropriately – and that is no issue of concern, I possess attire befitting such an occasion.”

The alien man accepted the small scroll, taking a long whiff of it (yes he sniffs it) and feeling the parchment in his fingers a moment before he released it from the twine to unfold. His nails proved to be quite sharp and almost clawlike, he broke the red tethering by 'snipping' it between two of them. He unrolled it gently, with a care that many might not expect after seeing the sharpness of his fingertips. Held aloft in his hand not currently curled around a teacup he was scanning it from over the top of his glasses as he took a small sip of his 'spiked' beverage.

His glance over the details was short lived, attention snapping back to Ruka when she spoke to him. Rolling the parchment dexterously with one hand as he listened to her reply. His smile showed sparkling teeth (and of course fangs) and as she stood he smoothly set his cup down and joined her. Adjusting his own zanpakuto – which was shorter than many being the size of a wakazashi instead of a katana. He seemed to move naturally before she'd even finished her offer of sparring presently; he must have ancient manners to stand when a lady does.

“I am. Shall we remain here or attend the arena in squadron twelve?” Nyhil asked, leaving it up to her. The mock battle was all that suited his purposes, where it took place mattered little.
