Thrush had been growing more round by the day, and it was almost obvious enough for the rest of the warren to question it. But she herself was well aware of the kits in her stomach already, not that she had any intention of sharing that information just yet. Rather, she fumed over her lost senses with the one who was the father, who was the type to have more than just Thrush as a partner. But it had happened.
She would dare any who would stop the stomping doe from leaving the warren and cursing the buck responsible for her woes, as she was doing at that precise moment. A buck she had no intention of ever sharing her new kits with, not in this worthless place that couldn't even feed her alone, much less new mouths! And she was STUCK here! She kicked up the dirt and shouted at the trees just out of earshot of the dens, as if they could change the course of her fate.
She knew of the hlessi that were out here, but she was beyond the point of caring. Her only thought was how far she could possibly run in one direction before she found something better for her children than starvation. She dared a wild rabbit to try anything with a hostile and pregnant doe, she'd tear into them as if they were the cause of her stress.

Potato's nose twitched faster and faster as he watched the furious doe take her anger out on the trees. Huh. Interesting. Slightly scary, but interesting. He had been resting, plotting his next move, and he hadn't expected someone from the warren on the hill happen upon his hiding place. She hadn't seen him yet, and if he hunkered down she might not notice him at all, but he couldn't let this opportunity pass. A doe was a doe, and this one was on her own without other rabbits or owsla nearby. "Are you all right," he asked, approaching very slowly. The doe was angry enough to attack the ground and the trees, and he didn't want to get his ears ripped off.

A voice was the last thing she had expected, so her first reaction was to jump out of her fur. Or, at least, a close as you can come to that, eyes wide and staring down the darker male that she couldn't recognize as from the warren. Oh, great, more trouble. Or not, giving the tone of voice he spoke with. "Oh... yeah, sure, I'm fine." she huffed, quickly calming herself down. She gave the stranger a quick once-over, shaking her head lightly, "I'm not going to mutilate you, brownie. I highly doubt I could catch you anyway..."

Potato's ears slowly returned to a more neutral position, and his nose started to wiggle again. It was all too easy to slip into his old ways, expecting to be harassed by everyone. The dominant rabbits in his old warren seemed to pick up on it and take it as an invitation. Some days he thought that it would never be different, not even since the change. He had to admit it was a large part in his decision to join this suicide mission. Nothing to lose. If he stopped running, no one would miss him. "Are you going somewhere?" he asked, looking back the way she had come. Perhaps she was like him. She had mentioned that she didn't think she could catch him, and perhaps that meant she was weak or low in rank like he had been.

She thought it over for a moment before replying. "You know what, I think I am... You wouldn't happen to know where to find food, would you?" She knew it was a long shot, but hey, asking would give more results than just assuming he was dumb and making her own way elsewhere. Hlessi had to be pretty resourceful to live without the safety of a warren, after all. She was half-tempted to say 'please', but she held fast to her tongue. That had to be maternal instincts kicking in... always trying to make her go soft, but not this day!

He couldn't believe his ears. He knew the rabbits on the hill must be hungry, but he wouldn't have thought they'd ask him for flay. It certainly made his job much easier all of a sudden. "I do actually," he said, "But we'd need to travel a little while to get there." He hoped she wouldn't be turned off by distance. Perhaps he needed to sweeten the deal? "I know where to find good flay and a warm burrow," he said. "I can take you there."

Well that was highly unexpected. Thrush eyed up the male, not sure if he was trying to be smart or honest. Either way, she may as well take the chance. She could still lay a hurt on someone if they tried anything, even in her plump bodice. She glanced back towards the warren and snorted before turning back to Potato, "I've got nothing to lose at the point. Lead the way erm... well I don't exactly know your name, do I?"

"I'm Potato," he said, and his ears dropped a little as he continued, "of no mark." Being one of the surviving males from the original warren didn't exactly impress the ladies, and no one had claimed him so far. Even the females from his old warren seemed to prefer the new males when picking their preferred partners. That could be because of the low status he had always had, but it gave him some comfort that very few other males from his old warren had been claimed. "Oh, you might not know about the marks," he said, suddenly realizing that what had started to become normal to him wasn't necessarily so for this new doe. His old warren didn't have a mark system after all, and he did not know about the customs of the warren on the hill.

"I'm afraid not." She frowned slightly, the very corners of her mouth twitching downwards, "I'm going to have to learn a few things, aren't I?" She had been on the verge of commenting on his coat pattern before he'd brought up that is was something other than that, and for that she'd been glad not to have said anything at all. She didn't need any more embarrassment caused by a male, much less one she'd only just met. And apparently, it would mean more food, so things were looking up already. "You can call me Thrush. But if you make it cute in any way, I will smack you for it." She only hope her bluff was threatening, even if she herself didn't feel as if it were.

"Nice to meet you Thrush," he said, hoping she wouldn't find a reason to smack him. He had started to walk, leading her towards the safe haven of his warren. For once he was the one with the upper paw when it came to knowledge. He knew what it was like to learn to fit in with a new and foreign system. "Don't worry," he hurried to say, "You'll learn quickly. Does mark the males they prefer to show who they belong to. I guess to avoid fighting over the high ranking does..." He was moving at a rather slow pace and had no trouble talking and walking without being winded. They were moving away from the hill-warren territory so they should hopefully not meet anyone. And if they did, it would look more suspicious if they were running. "You can start your own mark," he said, "Then any bucks you fancy and your kittens will belong to that mark. Male kittens will leave your mark after they grow up of course." ChezaRain Want to resurrect this one?
