There are a lot of "elements" when it comes to combat and spells. Elements being basically "a type of damage". Its important to know which weapons or abilities are what element because some enemies are resistant or weak to them.
Crafted Elements: These are elements that come standard with every weapon you obtain. They are Physical (weaponless), Blunt, Slash, and Pierce. Some weapons combine two of these as they can be used either way or just the nature of the weapon. Guns for example are blunt and pierce.
Natural Elements: Elements that can be found within the world are Fire, Water, Ice, Wind, Lightning, Nature(representing plant life mostly), and Earth. Obviously these are the elements most people recognize.
Supernatural Elements: These elements are not found in nature and can only come from special sources. They are Light, Dark, Arcane, and Psychic.
Specialized Elements: Some elements aren't innate or granted, but are designed for a specific purpose either by creating it or a special style of combat. These are Slaying (the art of killing beasts), and SIlver (the coating and style of weapon to destroy horror monsters).
There is no specific "Water beats Fire beats Ice" as its not always clear cut but you can't go wrong with your instincts. Unless you're completely wrong. But its a pretty safe bet that if something has "ice" in the name or uses skills of that sort, fire will probably do a good job.
A lot of enemies are not elemental and their weaknesses and resistances stem from their biology than anything else. A slime creature for example will most likely not take a lot of Blunt damage due to its gel like body.
Also be aware of the guild member's own weaknesses. Bringing in those who are weak to fire against a lava beast will result in lots of hurt and possibly a defeat. But hey, no pain no gain!

It should also be said that your party should not be made up of everyone using a singular element. You weaken yourself doing so.
Everyone with a slashing weapon may find an enemy not so easy to kill that way.

Will you be adding elemental strengths and weaknesses to the character thread? Also, will there be an in game item or method for determining an enemy's strengths and weaknesses aside from trial and error? A 'scan' function or something? (like the magic lenses in the 'Tales of' games)

I probably should add that to characters yes. As for enemies, that's tricky. On one part I like the idea of not knowing. It adds a bit of danger. On the other hand, yes I can do that in one of two ways:
>Bestiary to show info after you've killed it. >"Scan" in battle to see enemy stats.
I'll throw up another poll on the facebook page to see what people want.
