Being alone, without the comfort of friend, family or even his overprotective goat familiar, was an unusual state for the golden stallion to be in. Especially since the events he'd come to refer to only as The Incident. Words that were completely incapable of even beginning to describe the absolute devastation, the physical, mental and emotional trauma. The nightmares that still plagued his sleep and woke him up in cold sweat with his heart pounding and the instinct to lash out and attack anything and anyone that was nearby.

Worst of all was the smell. That otherworldly smell of fire and an earth not this one. Above all else, this was what stuck with him. More than the blood and screams and terror. More than the guilt and responsibility he felt. The phantom odor that haunted him waking and sleeping. He had made an oath that day, he would find the ones to whom the odor belonged to and he would avenge his herd. At least, after he fulfilled the promise he had made to his sister. He would find her, make sure she was safe and happy, then he would find the demons and eradicate them.

Most times the nightmares came when he was alone, better all around as he didn't have to worry about causing harm to others, and tonight was no exception. He was alone wandering the kawani lands seeking news of Liliah, the rest of his family gone, and Valencianne distant on some errand of her own, so it wasn't surprising . He came to abruptly, breathing heavily as though he'd run a great distance, his heart pounding hard against the ribs that held it in his chest.

Though the nightmare was the same, there was something different about this night. It was too quiet, to still. And that phantom scent was too strong, too heavy, too near to be nothing more than a part of the dream. Which could only mean one thing. The ones who had slaughtered his herd, his family, were there.

Gullveig was grooming her feathers when she smelled it, the lifeblood of another creature nearby, and as she smoothed her tongue over the feathers, cleaning off the sticky blood that clung to them and hindered her flight, she wondered if one of the soquili from the small herd of winged soquili she and her brother had just slaughtered had escaped. What was the point in teaming up with Brynjulfr if he couldn't even get the job done properly? Her nose wrinkled and lips pulled back in a snarl as she turned to look at her brother, trying to decide if she should just kill him or go after the scent she'd just caught. "You let one of them go?" she growled, venom dripping from her voice. "Some hunter you are, can't even kill off a whole herd even with help." She flexed her wings and lifted her head to sniff the air, trying to pinpoint where the scent was coming from, her ears perked up and alert as she tried to listen for it to make a move. The scent certainly wasn't familiar to her -- maybe this one hadn't even been part of the herd they'd killed after all, just a lone soquili showing in in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well, for him, anyway. For Gullveig and her brother? It was just right. She didn't stop to see if her brother was following her as she began to track the scent, eager to sink her fangs into it's throat.

Brynjulfr scoffed as he watched his sister's back, hackles raised. "You're the one who came crawling to me, remember?" he growled lowly, voice hushed as their large bodies crept through the thick of the trees in search of their new pray, plotting to steal the kill for himself once they'd taken care of it. He snorted when Gullveig snapped shut up at him, and with a glare he pushed past her, shoving her out of his way with his shoulder. They'd taken care of the herd and he was done with her; this new pray was his. He could hear Gullveig give chase after him -- and who she was hunting now, he wasn't sure -- but they were both breathing hard and wearing matching feral grins on their muzzles as they stopped in their tracks when they found the unicorn. "Well well, what do we have here?" Brynjulfr sneered, moving to circle around the unicorn as Gullveig stalked in the opposite direction, intending to trap the lone stallion. Neither of the purewalkers recognized Giolladhe yet -- they'd both killed so many, it was hard to keep track. "Wandered too far a way from home, little unicorn?"

The scent grew stronger, coming in at him from two sides. Just as they had that time...It was almost like it was happening all over again. His muscles started to shake, the feeling of being hunted, being prey awakened in him the instinct to flee. But if he did, he would be playing into their hands. With the two of them they could herd him to an area where the advantage was theirs and kill him easily. But that was something he could not allow. Not yet and maybe not ever. There was still so much he had left to do, so much to atone for...

He tossed his mane proudly and stood tall. They might be hunting him, but he was not mindless and he would not go down easily, or without a fight. Following the voice of one he turned his head in that direction, allowing the moonlight to glint off his horn as he responded to the taunt.

'Not hardly, hellspawn,' He spat. 'Not so far as you or the damned partner that is stalking with you.'

Gullveig's grin widened when she saw the unicorn stand his ground, pleased to finally have what seemed to be a challenge in front of them. Oh, this one was going to be fun. "It seems as though we have a fighter on our paws, brother," she commented gleefully, and slid her tongue out over her maw as she gazed at the stallion with hunger. She was full, but it didn't matter. She'd feast on this stallion's suffering anyway. "Aren't unicorns supposed to be kind and gentle?" Gullveig asked, the tone of her voice mocking, as though those ideas were revolting to the purewalker; the very thought of it made her shudder with disgust. "Aren't you supposed to be healers? Or does this one prefer to taint his precious horn with death instead of life?"

Brynjulfr listened with bored impatience to his sister's goading; it never made sense to him why she enjoyed to draw things out so much. The unicorn was right there; why waste so much breath talking to it instead of killing it? All he wanted to hear was the stallion begging for his life, and it's ragged, desperate breaths as he claimed the unicorn's life. "Maybe this is why he escaped from that herd we just killed," he mused aloud, and then snorted with a glare at Gullveig. "Must have slipped away while you were talking them to death, instead of actually killing them," he snarled, and then fixed his eyes back on the unicorn. "Enough with the small talk," he growled, a deep rumble in his chest, and then pushed off the ground with his hind legs and spread his wings wide, aiding him as he leapt toward Giolladhe, all sharp claws and vicious fangs.

Giolladhe sneered as the demon thought to goad him. Yes, those ideals were the norm for his kind, but they weren't all. It was less uncommon than one might think that they learned the arts of self-defense and fighting to protect. He himself was more of a fighter than a healer, for all the good it had done for him in the past.

He stood his ground, muscles quivering in fear and anticipation as he waited for the attack, so he might at least get an idea where one and the other were, so he could defend himself more accurately, and hopefully do enough damage to take one or both with him before he died. Granted it was a long shot, but it was the only hope he had. His ears swiveled this way and that taking in the sounds of breathing and the shuffling of unusual feet against the ground.

He had a general idea of where they were, but it wasn't precise enough for him to be comfortable to make a move. Damn his blindness, he thought bitterly, though it was followed by a quick pang of remorse which he shoved deep inside. There was a time and place for that feeling, but not now. Not when it would get him killed.

He braced himself, knowing an attack would come, soon, and it would hurt like hell, but pain he could endure.' One might assume that a demon such as yourself would actually attack and do damage, not try to talk their prey to death.' He drawled sarcastically.'One might be led to believe that perhaps your kind aren't so fearsome-'

The impact of the pouncing stallion cut him off, and he felt a tearing of claws through the tender flesh of his sides. The pain was sharp, hot and immediate. He turned his head swiftly and snapped his teeth hard as he attempted to buck the creature off, kicking out, hoping that at least one attack might hit.

Brynjulfr felt the thrill that rushed through his body as his claws dug into flesh, sunk down into thick muscle; this was what he was made for, and it was all that could satisfy him. Eventually. He never seemed to stop craving it, the swelling of blood underneath claws and teeth, the insatiable hunger, and he was in no hurry to stop. "I'm going to split you open," snarled, his claws nicking the unicorn's belly, and that's when he felt it -- teeth closing around the edge of his pelt, pulling on it, but it was a mild pain at best. Still enough to distract him for a moment, enough so that when the unicorn kicked out he felt the impact on one of his meaty legs, his grip on his prey slipping. He all but roared as the painful sensation shot up through his body, and Brynjulfr's maw was open wide as he went in for another attack, his eyes honed in on the unicorn's throat, but another kick to his side caught him off guard and he stumbled backwards, panting. Brynjulfr pushed on heedlessly, shoving forward into a run as he threw the heavy weight of his body against the other stallion, trying to knock him to the ground.

For the moment, Gullveig was content to watch. What a mindless beast her brother was -- did he truly lack creativity? Did he not understand the pleasure of a slow kill, of destroying lives and hopes and dreams? "My brother here is happy to indulge your wish of pure physical violence, if that's what you desire. But what he -- and you -- fail to understand is the power that words can hold over others," she said, continuing to speak even as her brother was kicked away from the unicorn, watching as the two stallions fought and crashed against each other in battle. "If Brynjulfr cannot kill you, then I'll have my turn. I'll make you wish you let my brother kill you now instead of prolonging your torture. Don't think that if you escape from us today that you will be safe." The last word rumbled out from her chest in a deep growl; no, this unicorn would never be safe again. If she did not feast on his dead body today, she would make him -- and all that he... cares for -- regret it.

The healing power of his unicorn blood was working hard to keep up with the damage he was taking, not enough to heal him completely -not even close- but enough to keep him conscious and prevent the shock that comes from blood loss. Even then, the pain was of such unbearable levels, he nearly passed out. But he couldn't. Not if he was to survive.

His sides heaved as he struggled to get enough air in his lungs to continue fighting. He needed to toss the stallion enough to get away. The mindless beast he was, the only real danger he posed -which was not inconsiderable-was physical. Physical damage while bad enough, could be healed, as long as one survived long enough.

'I doubt there's much hellspawn like you can do to me that hasn't already been done.' He muttered lowly.'Hell, death might even be welcome. It's not like you didn't grant the rest of my family and herd such a release.' He didn't intend to reveal that last, but… ' Not that it truly matters. You kill me or I you. One way or another, this will end.'

Gullveig breathed in sharply, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the unicorn. No... this unicorn was not from the heard they'd just killed, was he? No, his wounds of his soul were old. They had killed his heard, but it had not been this one. "Brynjulfr, stop," she ordered, the grin on her maw wide and full of sharp teeth. She waited expectantly for her brother to stop attacking the unicorn, but when he ignored her, Gullveig's ears flattened back in fury and she growled. "I said STOP!" With a shout, she spread her wings and used them to boost her leap, knocking Brynjulfr aside with her body. She bared her teeth at her stunned brother for only a moment before swiftly looking at the unicorn again. "We know this one. We didn't kill his herd today, Brynjulfr. This one was allowed to live and stew in his failure to protect his herd." She paused to smile then, wide and cruel. "This will end only when I let it. Have you found replacements to fill the void in your heart that we tore open, unicorn? Do you feel whole again, or are you still broken?"

His sides heaved, and he fought to stay strong on his hooves, to not show any weakness before these monsters. He would not give them or anyone the satisfaction of seeing him simply fall. But the adrenaline was starting to wear off and he didn't know how much longer he could last. If this wasn't finished now by him, or more likely by them, he would likely fall soon, but if he were to die, he wanted his death to be a glorious one, one that would have meaning. And one that might in some way avenge the lives that were taken by these two demons.

He bared his teeth and spat in the direction of the one that seemed to be in charge. 'I'd damn you to hell, but it would make no difference. And as for the rest, I'll join you in hell before I give you the satisfaction.' He listened to the sound of claws scraping on the loose packed dirt and grass of the terrain, ears flickering as he oriented himself. Preparing for one final rush, the last he had in him.
