There are three types of battles: random, mapped, and scripted. The first one is obvious. Mapped battles are where the enemy is clearly present on the map and the player can choose to either evade or confront it. Scripted battles are story involved, and most boss battles end up this way.
The system I've integrated for battle allows the player to choose Flee/Run Away by moving the cursor to the far left. Normally it will choose Fight immediately. You can only run away from random encounters.
When fighting, depending on that character, you will have four to five options: Attack, Technique, Magic, Item, and Guard.
>Attack is just the basic attack using the players equipped weapon. >Techniques are special skills that can only be used when the Character has built up enough TP or Technique Points. (Whoda thunk?) TP is gained by attacking or taking damage. >Magic is obviously spells and uses the character's Mana. >Item uses something from the inventory. >Guard gives the character a 1 turn increase to their defenses and a minor regeneration.
Most characters have both Technique and Magic skills (Rad and Soa are Tech only).
Battles are turn based. Pay attention to icons on both allies and enemies as they will give you an idea about their status effects. When dealing damage a number will pop up. If a certain type of attack is stronger or weaker against an enemy or ally then the words Weakness or Resisted will appear along with the damage. Critical hits are awesomely represented by rainbow numbers.
Try not to die out there Minions!

Extra note: Technique points do not carry over from battle to battle... UNLESS an equipped item gives that bonus. Also the points start at often random low number ranges at the start of combat.
