Alara is one of those people whose happiest around other people. She likes to talk and joke and her goal is usually to amuse other people involved in the conversation more than herself. To her there's nothing better than earning a smile or a laugh from someone. Making a flower blossom appear from behind a child's ear to make them smile is something she delights in doing. An entertainer at heart Alara likes to be the center of attention though she at least offers a reason for people to notice her.

Strangers to her are just friends waiting to happen and Alara is always on the lookout for new people to meet and entertain. Feasts and gathers are also great times to make new connections or admirers and Alara tries to attend as many as she can. Eggs on the sands mean more searching and thus new candidates to befriend.

With friends Alara mostly likes to tell jokes and do tricks personalized for them. She listens to their problems when they confide in her though she doesn't always take them as seriously as some might like. Though loyal to friends and somewhat generous with her time Alara does not share possessions, food or marks with her fellows to the point of appearing outright stingy.

For a woman approaching twenty turns Alara doesn't always act it. She prefers the company of young weyrbrats as well as younger candidates and riders. Older people are more stuck in their ways as far as she's concerned. It is the young who still remember what it's like to wonder at the world and live for the sake of living. Alara prefers the company of those who can indulge and enjoy themselves without questioning things too much. She also finds the young have more time to watch and appreciate her skills which is important as she's nothing without an audience.

Should she become too old to Impress Alara plans to work in the creche. It is the place she loves most in the Weyr and she has always been good with children.


Lesson essays and answers from Alara often come complete with doodles in the margins because she got bored writing them. She also has a collection of toys to shame most Lord Holder's children. It is not uncommon for Alara to be practicing some form of sleight of hand to entertain herself or the person she's talking to even when it's not the best time. Alara is not incompetent or unreliable but she is decidedly still immature. Outwardly she is a young woman but internally Alara is still a grinning bright eyed girl.

While the dragons she grew up around may have a less than stellar memory Alara is quite the opposite. She remembers almost everything she's ever seen or heard incredibly clearly. From magic tricks and lesson songs to lover's erogenous zones Alara learns something and it sticks with her forever. Of course memorization does not always equal comprehension. Just because she can parrot something back to you doesn't mean she fully understands it. Rereading and discussing intellectual concepts fully is still necessary for Alara to truly get them. Whereas things of a more physical or purely visual nature are understood faster.


Alara is an undeniably greedy and indulgent young woman. Oh sure she performs magic to make you happy, she wants to see you smile or laugh but that's the one freebie the world gets from her. Though there's nothing she really needs to buy Alara craves marks and takes on many extra errands as a weyrbrat has time for to earn them. Once enough money is amassed Alara then spends it on silly trinkets, clothes and little toys that fascinate or amuse her just so that she can have things. No adult needs half a dozen rolling and walking toy dragons & runners but Alara has purchased them anyways and displays them proudly.

Alara has always had an inexplicable need to posses things. She was raised to share but it has never sat well with her. She cares deeply about her fellow Weyr inhabitants but she cannot deny her desire for personal affects and for them to be hers alone. If she has earned an item or acquired something first she really shouldn't be required to let others handle or partake in it as well.

Part of her wonders if Impressing will ease the ache inside her, thousands of people on pern have dragons but no one but Alara could ever have that one specific dragon meant just for her.

For now Alara is a young woman waiting to see what happens next. Her destiny is at Ista Weyr that much she knows but what form it takes is a mystery. Either way the show must go on.

Physical Description:
Alara is a fairly average looking woman. She stands a simple 5'7 and sports a thick frame, her overindulgence has made her a little chubby although not so out of shape that she would fail as a candidate. Her complexion is dusky and darkens when she gets a lot of sunlight. Dark green eyes sit above a fat little button nose and full lips. Alara has short, curly, light brown hair that looks somewhere between cute bedhead and like someone at least tried to finger comb it.


History:
Alara was born and raised at Ista Weyr. She grew up in the creche like all the others until she was assigned foster parents. For the most part her childhood held nothing of note although there was more than one occasion upon which punishments were doled out for sneaking an extra dessert or failing to pass on toys she'd outgrown to the younger children.

For the most part Alara was your standard weyrbrat with a flair for the dramatic. When not doing chores or in lessons she was huddled in some corner with her friends telling them about something that'd happened to her that day with flashy hand movements and silly sound effects.

Alara was 13 when Mendolan came to the Weyr as a candidate. He was an interesting boy, two turns older than her and one of the nomadic people that roamed northern Pern. Jovial and playful he was a prime target for Alara to befriend. It was from him that Alara learned several slight of hand tricks and more about the world off the island amongst other things. They remain good friends to this day although it looks like Mendolan will age out soon and leave.

Not much has changed over the past few Turns Alara stands for hatchings now and has more responsibilities but nothing new and interesting has happened to her for a while.

Talents: Above average memory, very good sleight of of hand skills.
Notes:
Pern obviously has no magicians and harpers are the main entertainers but I did read that sleight of hand and juggling could/did exist.

Alara does the best she can to amuse her friends with the few tricks and skills she has alongside stories, shadow puppets and some sound effects.
