Name: Mairin
Age: 18
Gender: Female
Sexual Preference: Heterosexual
Craft/Hall/Rank: Apprentice, seacraft
Personality:

Mairn is an energetic young woman who’s going headfirst into whatever the future holds. Daring and determined she’ll try anything not obviously fatal at least once just for the sake of it. Failure is certainly an option but failing to even try is not and she’s not too fond of people who shy away from a challenge. Fear and pain are rarely factors for Mairin and she often seeks out new things to test herself against. She’s not fond of the sight of human blood but it won’t stop her from helping someone who’s injured if she can, anymore than the knowledge that she may get bit will stop her from sticking her hand in the mouth of a sharp toothed fish to retrieve a hook.

Mairin has a habit of butting in when she thinks she sees trouble and with her “Let me help you” can mean “let me do this for you” or “ I think you’re doing that wrong.” While lending a hand to an ailing crewmember can be a good thing sometimes Mairin refuses to acknowledge when her assistance is not required or wanted. She can’t even claim to always mean well because sometimes Mairin meddles simply because she thinks something is wrong the way it is happening and she should of course fix it. She’s not above trying to correct others or nudge them into doing something a certain way if she’s sure she’s in the right.

Very much a people person, most likely a by-product of being raised in amongst the close families that ships crews become, Mairin tends to get along well with others. She may hold differing opinions on things but she’s reasonably good at keeping an open mind and allowing others to make their points, though she reserves the right to disagree and counter.

In group tasks Mairin tends to take direction from superiors well and throws herself thoroughly into whatever job she’s given making sure her share gets done. She tries to be fair when given any sort of authority position and she has no problem giving it up to those with more experience; although she still reserves the right to insert her opinion on how things should be done.

Mairin’s not the sort to hold grudges if she feels wronged by a single incident or argument. She's not the sort to be passive aggressive about her feelings and is much more likely to state her grievance up front and then talk or argue the issue out tell she is satisfied with the result. Though she will hold grudges against people she finds herself truly disliking due to repeated problems or displays of behaviors she can't condone.

In regards to actual socializing Mairin is fairly chatty although she’s prone more to storytelling than gossip and she speaks pretty informally.

Mairin has an obsessive personality, at times she can cling to things beyond all reasonable need to. Adrenaline is one of these things and as a dangerous double edge to her daring Mairin will sometimes seek out things that bring her newer and stronger feelings of thrill. She’s jumped from the high branches of trees and ship’s railings in her younger years just to feel that surge of sweet, exciting, terror. These days she attempts more practical things that give her the same thrill like holding her breath underwater till her lungs burn, standing outside in strong winds and similar things that make her heart race but do not put her in real danger.

Mairin's obsessiveness is not focused on that alone and can range from long amounts of time researching something to prove herself right or find the description of a word she only half remembers, to writing and rewriting the same message or tying and untying the same knot until she feels the urge to do it again fade. Time and energy wasted obsessing on things is something that becomes a greater issue as Mairin ages and her new responsibilities require greater time management.

Overall Mairin is a fairly average young woman with a few quirks who is still growing into herself.

Virtues: bold, willing to experiment, works well with others.
Flaws: obsessive, meddlesome, somewhat pushy.
Physical Description:Mairin is tall and stocky, with wide shoulders and thick sturdy legs. Countless hours spent swimming have given her some nicely defined muscle though by no means is she as built or strong as most boys or those who practice more physically demanding crafts.

Mairin has naturally fair skin long since tanned darker by exposure to the sun. Her inky black hair is kept in a small braid that falls just past her shoulder. Warm, dark brown eyes sit above a small fat snub nose and thin pale lips.

Clothing for Mairin is generally an afterthought, simple and functional is what works best for her.
History:

Born and initially raised in Ista Hold Mairin has lead a fairly uneventful life thus far. Her parents are both kindly and hardworking people that Mairin admires and loves dearly. Despite her mother’s best efforts in attempting to interest her in interesting her in the cooking arts an early age Mairin showed not even the most basic interest in them. She was never going to be a Pastry vendor like her mother, it was far too dull a thing for the young girl. Still Mairin views her mother as a wise and reliable person and she has mainly pleasant memories of her as her primary parent.

Like her father, a fisherman who was often away, Mairin preferred water to land and spent as much time in it as possible; she could swim efficiently underwater long before she could run full tilt without falling over. Her childhood years were spent down by the docks , in the ocean itself or on the boats of anyone she’d pestered into letting her on while they remained moored or near the shore. When her father was home she’d trail after him like a second shadow, listening to his stories and absorbing sailing terms and how to tie or untie different knots when he teasingly tied her hands together with them or make a game of simply making one and asking her to untie it , sometimes for extra desserts or a later curfew.

In between all her play Mairin managed a decent education both of the formal kind and in how to barter.

When she came of age Mairin followed somewhat in her father’s footsteps, which surprised no one by that time, and apprenticed not to fishercraft but seacraft. As she’s grown Mairin’s become a little less passionate about the ships themselves so much as the water they sail upon. Though it is rather hard to explore the depths of the ocean she’s sure it can be done and that it will pay off someday. There is a whole other world below the surface where regular fish and dolphins live, it’s begging to be explored fully as far as she’s concerned.

Most of the last few turns of her life have had Mairin aboard a ship gaining more first hand experience of how a ship's crew functions during various tasks, how to perform each type of task she is assigned and the like. The knowledge she absorbed as a child was useful but out on the ocean there are so many more variables and all the theory in the world doesn't matter when things go wrong and lives can be at stake. It is sometimes a harrowing experience but for the most part Mairin has been happy.

Recently on a trip home Mairin was Searched and with thread now falling in strange ways it seemed wrong to ignore the request. If she fails to Impress the ocean will always be waiting for her. Mairin is adjusting now to life at a Weyr and the actuality of what it means to be a Candidate. Weyr life still being orderly and scheduled like on a ship is helpful and group candidate chores make her feel like part of a crew again.

Notes:
Mild OCD , nothing that would endanger others but it will get in the way from time to time.
