The ring stayed. Avalon wasn't sure if she felt that was an imposition of some sort or if she genuinely didn't mind it, but it remained on her finger, as real and tangible as the studs in her ears. And her uniform was studded with Earth symbols, fractured and broken but still there--obvious reminders of where she'd come from, that she wasn't like every other Negaverser. She'd skipped some vital stage.

Still, she thought this wasn't such a bad thing. She wanted to be where she was, didn't see anything wrong with it, loved it, actually. She wasn't sure why she'd hesitated when Howlite had made the offer anymore--concerns over losing her civilian life were nigh negligible now that it had happened and she'd had almost a week to sort of...

Acclimate.

Part of that was learning the duties given to the captains of the Negaverse, and one of those was patrol. Especially since she was new, and hadn't been assigned to one of the three branches yet (but SpecOps was right out--she was not going to get embroiled in fights to the death).

The last thing she expected was to run into someone she knew. "Valhalla," she said, only realizing after completing the full step forward that of course. She was of Chaos now. "It's been a while, hasn't it?" She hadn't seen him since she was a page, had she?

The night air was cool and crisp as Valhalla made his patrol through the city. He typically waited for nightfall once his fiance was asleep, figuring it was better than keeping him awake with worry over what may or may not happen. It was the youma he was most concerned with, since he trusted certain people to keep their underlings at bay to the best of their abilities, and to keep them away from the innocent, but the tingling of a chaotic energy he felt, had him drawing closer to investigate.

And he wished he hadn't.

At first all he could do was stare at her, despite her greeting, despite the aura that now surrounded and consumed her. He stared at her, his bright eyes dulled with fear and a sudden wave of dispare. This... this wasn't possible.

"A-Avalon," he choked, wanting to approach her, taking a step forward before hesitating, the chaotic energy keeping him at bay from doing anything too rash. "What... what happened? What did they do to you??" he asked, although he was fairly certain he already knew the answer. She'd been corrupted. How, he didn't know, but because he knew senshi could be corrupted, there was no reason why knights would somehow be immune. No one was safe from Chaos...

But something else caught his attention, and for a few moments he hoped it was because she was simply just a fake. "How do you know my name?" he wondered, holding on to whatever hope he had that she wasn't the real Avalon, easily recalling the one chance meeting with the senshi named Lyra, and how she apparently couldn't recall her life as a normal senshi.

He looked… sad. Well, that was a weak word for it. Avalon wasn't sure why, except that she remembered all of it. The fear and loathing people attached to the Negaverse, the sort of thing she'd felt, too. It stirred a weird feeling of pity in her… but also a kind of sadness, too. Valhalla probably had never expected something like this, but she'd blindsided him with it. Hadn't she?

"They made me better," she told him, knowing it sounded like dogma, the sort of thing you repeated over and over until even you really believed it. Except it was true: in the painful last moments of Squire Avalon, she'd become something stronger and purer than herself. There was no reason to be afraid--the only ones with the conviction to kill were her brethren now.

Well. Except the psychopaths.

That was another matter. "You gave it to me," she said. "Did you think I'd forget how we met? We fought a youma together." There was no need to do that any more. Youma were frightening, sure, but they weren't all bad. They just needed a better controlling hand than they had… probably. Not like she would say as much to Howlite… "I suppose if you've met others who've been brought around, you might have met some who forgot about being on your side," she allowed. "I didn't. But look now!" She spun in place, still fascinated with the way her Chaos-powered body moved so much more easily than Order had ever allowed her to. The shattered symbols of Earth caught the moonlight and reflected it back, bright embroidery throwing pinpricks of gold into the still air.

"No more weakness or confusion or fear," she said, in tones of exaltation. "I'm stronger now. Better now."

”Better?” he repeated, wishing his voice sounded stronger, not as defeated as what was coming from his mouth. How could this be? The Avalon he’d met had wished nothing but death for the Negaverse, and yet... here she was saying they’d made her better?

She sounded excited, clearly proud of herself as she spun to show him what she’d become.

And it made him feel sick.

“How can you say that?” he demanded, wanting to reach out for her, to pull her back to their side, to make her better. “There was nothing weak about you before! You were strong and determined and... how could you possibly be better?”

Stronger... he could imagine so. He never knew just what Chaos could do, and he never wanted to know, but he also knew not to underestimate it. Just the thought of what she must have gone through made him feel nauseous, for while he didn’t know the process it involved, the aura Chaos gave off was enough to give him a pretty good idea that it wasn’t pretty.

“You once told me you thought of the Negaverse as monsters... of how they tried taking your starseed... how can you think you’re better than you were...?”

He obviously didn't know her that well, she told herself, because she knew that her past self, her Order self, had been scared and alone and weak. It had been such a long time ago that they'd met, after all. The Surrounding was more than a year ago, maybe. "A lot happens in a year," she told him, "I was weak, and I was alone, and I didn't want to be like that any more." So what if she'd taken the easy way out? She'd changed to the winning side. The side that supported her most.

"They were monsters," she says. "But energy, that's… replaceable. It doesn't hurt them, not for long."

The revelation of the Negaverse trying to take her starseed staggered her for a moment. She tried to sort that out into what she knew and it didn't quite fit. I notice I am confused, she thought, and then she tried to reason through it: he could be telling the truth, which made no sense and upset everything she understood about her life as it seemed to her now. He could be completely right, after all--she had no idea. She couldn't have any idea because all of that was lost to her. But his assertion couldn't be proven. She could never know conclusively. That meant her course of action was obvious. "You're lying," she said. "You want to make me regret what I've done, and I don't. You don't have any fodder to make me change my mind with the truth. So you're lying and hoping that I won't think critically enough about it to realize you're lying."

Valhalla just couldn’t believe what he was hearing coming from Avalon’s mouth. How did such a strong young woman suddenly start to believe that she used to be so weak? There hadn’t been a lot of time Valhalla had gotten to know her, but what he did know... he’d been impressed by. He’d looked up to her and her zeal and experience. And now...

“You were never weak, and you weren’t alone. What about Babylon? Or any of the others?” he tried, determined to get her to see... something. Anything that would remind her that there was a life before this corruption.

Maybe they hadn’t completely brainwashed her yet.

He saw her hesitation when he mentioned her starseed, and then for her to counter with such a weak rebuttal? She knew there were holes in her information... she must! Or perhaps he was just too hopeful that she was not completely lost.

“What motive do I have to lie?? Why would I want you to regret anything?? Three times!” he said with a raised voice, not to yell at her, but to make sure she was listening, that she could hear him. “Three times,” he repeated, softer this time once he was almost certain he had her attention, “You told me they’d tried to kill you three times. I know how it feels, to almost die. To have someone’s hand inside my chest. To feel someone take hold of my starseed...” A hand lifted to place over the armor that gave little protection if someone really wanted to kill him.

“Avalon... you’re not one of them...” His eyes shone with desperation and sorrow, feeling lost and helpless in the face of this new revelation.
