Charlotte tilted her head at the berry bush. It swayed in the breeze nicely, bringing a little smile to her muzzle. It even had plump, juicy berries speckled here and there. But, that was the problem. Being new to this land, she had never seen this species of berries. Were they safe to eat? Were there any side effects?
A little sigh escaped her lips. If only there were someone she could ask. She looked around the little clearing, wondering if maybe someone was around she hadn't heard. No, no one was around. Not that she could see at least. She didn't even know anyone in this place to ask either.
Another little sigh escaped. What was she going to do on her own? How did she possibly think she could do this? She stood a little straighter, determination in her face. She was not a little princess who knew nothing about the world. If she died now, the loss of her love was for nought. No, she could do this, she could sniff them, right?
She bent down, trying to smell if they were okay to eat.

Cheveyo was making a routine trip down from the alpine meadow where his little herd resided to check for a few herbs that the herd was growing sort on. The little usdia loved living in the mountains but the higher altitude sometimes meant they grew short on certain herbs. Ah well..he didn't really mind these little trips, they were peaceful for the most part and gave him the opportunity to get away from the pressures of running the herd.
Following a hardly seen game trail the little stallion was quite startled when he came through the brush and found himself almost face to face with a dark colored stranger...which was startling enough, but what was even more so were the berries she seemed to be thinking about eating. "Ma'am! Those are poison!" He shouted out a quick warning..before she actually went ahead and tried the,..she was far to heavy for him to drag home for treatment and he didn't think he would be able to run back fast enough to return with the antidote if she eat them.

Charlotte froze at the yell. Her mouth staying open an inch from the berry. Her ears laid flat as she glanced to the side to see who could have yelled. Seeing it was a small stallion, she relaxed a little. Enough to close her mouth and lift her head. She looked at the berries again, then back at the little stallion. "Thank you, sir." She paused. "I...am new to this place." She glanced back at the berries to tilt her head at them. "I...have no ideas of what is edible in this place."
She smiled back at him, getting into a comfortable stance. "This bush. It is bad? Even the leaves? I am much better knowing food from volcano areas." She gave him a little smile to show she meant him no harm. It was true she was not from around here. It had taken him a few months to even get to where she was now. "You teach me about bush? Please?"

Chev was more then a little bit relieved that the mare chose to heed his warning and froze before taking the test bite she seemed to have been on the verge of taking. The little stallion was in fact so relieved by this that he didn't even notice her initial unease at the sound of his voice and he blew out a quick thankful breath when she pulled away from them. "You are more then welcome ma'am, those berries pack quite a punch...I've seen a mouthful of them down Soquili your size and more." He told her seriously. Berries were dangerous..oh sure some were wonderful and tasty eating but, like mushrooms, they shouldn't be eaten unless one knew for sure if they were safe.
"The leaves are alright, though not very tasty..but the berries, yes not even the birds eat those." He confirmed with a slight shake of his head. "You must have come a great distance, I don't know of any volcanoes in the area." He remarked and surely, that was something he would not have missed. "I can tell you what I know..." He allowed, though to be honest that did not go much farther then that they were bad to eat.

Charlotte rocked from hoof to hoof, slightly nervous as she had almost made a fool of herself. She was deeply hungry, but fainting from illness from a berry certainly would have dampened her plans. She gave the berries one more passing look and stepped back from them. Stepping up to the small stallion so they could have an actual conversation. Though not close enough he would have to stretch his neck to look up to her. It helped also being a little dainty for her gender. It had been one of the qualities her past herd master had admired her so much.
She nodded, giving a soft smile. "You tell me what to eat." Her stomach growled a little. "It has been a few days since I have seen something I am familiar with." Her smile was a little larger with his trying to think where the closest volcano could be. "Yes, traveled many moons to get here. Not safe in old home, so looking for new one." The small stallion would probably think the danger was from the volcano, but she didn't mind. She would let him think what he wanted. She didn't care as long as he could show her what to eat.
"So, small stallion." She smiled down at him. "What name you go by? You can call me Charlotte. It easier when pointing out to tell me what plants good to eat." She chuckled a little. Yes, much better then 'Hey you, look over here.' Rudeness of that type would not be tolerated, and easily avoided by a simple introduction at the beginning of a new acquaintance.

She certainly was a bit strange this mare...but she seemed friendly enough and Chev was willing to attribute any strangeness to cultural differences, as she said..she had traveled a great distance. "It's a pleasure to meet you Charlotte, my name is Cheveyo but most call me Chev, I run the Little Meadow herd and would be more then happy to show you the way to a local meadow if you'd like, plenty of good grass there." He assured her.
While some might have been offended by the way she called him a little stallion Chev took no offense to the comment. He was little and that fact had ceased to bother him a long time ago. He wondered briefly what had caused the mare to leave her old home and travel so far..but in the end he decided it wasn't much of his business. Soquili left home for all sorts of reasons, perhaps she had simply desired to see some new sights.

Charlotte tilted her head, staring down at Cheveyo. His name had intrigued her. She covered a little chuckle with a cough and took a breath before explaining. “In land I come from, Cheveyo a monster told stories to foals to keep them in line.” She eyed him, examining his body build. He was smaller than the stallions she knew, but he looked strong all the same. She tilted her head again “You not Cheveyo of stories, are you? You too nice to steal foals from baskets and kill them.”
She smiled again. She didn't know this little horse, but for some odd reason, she believed in him. “Meadow sound lovely. I miss food things.” Her mouth quirked into a little smile. “At least ripe juicy food things. Will be nice to be safe. Be full of food.” She frowned then, a thought creeping into her mind. “I not taking others food, am I?” She would rather go hungry if it meant someone else didn't have to. Especially if it was a young soquili or foal. She had so many questions about this field and where he lived. She guessed the only real way to learn the most about it would be to just go there and see for herself. “I love to go if you lead.” She smiled down at him.
