This is a private RP for my soquili Kiij and the familiar Sasha. At the moment it's just her but I might change that later. No posting please.

WARNING: Character death.
((It's not particularly descriptive but the fox does die. Do not read this if that will be upsetting for you.))
((And no I don't have a tag for her, her name is Sasha, Sirenz gave her to me with the soquili Farren which is why her file name is what it is.))

Dry bones. Old bones. Cold bones. Bones snapped open with the marrow torn out. There were bones everywhere from all manner of creature for a clean mile in any direction and at the heart of it all stood the mighty tower of bones. Hundreds and hundreds of bones had been stripped of their meat and had been piled as high as a scrub oak. These bones had been bleached in the sun, drenched in the rains of summer and frozen in the dead of winter. These bones were not like the others. These bones were a trophy for the creature Kiij. These were her pride, a mark of her success, her throne. The others had been the remains of meals from the course of her stay. They now outnumbered the ones in her tower but they meant nothing to her. They weren’t like the beautiful ones she had stacked up. The others were not the bones of the soquili that she had conquered.

Kiij lay in the sun by her pile licking her claws clean of mouse blood. It had scampered by as she was waking from her daily nap and she had seized the opportunity to have a little snack. She purred contentedly as she finished cleaning herself and lay back down lazily. Perhaps she would take another nap now that her appetite was sated. Kiij yawned, laid her head down, and curled her tail up to her side. Yes, she was sure that a nap was exactly what she wanted right now, after all, she was a cat.

She hadn’t always been though. There had been a time when she had been a soquili, like those whose bones she rested beneath. Kiij could remember this as plain as day. She didn’t miss it. She had been given extraordinary powers, power enough to claim this land as her own, and she couldn’t imagine being without them. As it happened to be she had taken the form of a cat one night and never seen the reason to change back. As a cat she blended in with the dusty ground and could hunt much more easily. If someone was bothering her she did not need to waste time changing form, she could simply spring at them and tear out their throats. Her thick fur coat offered great protection against the cold and she could fit more easily in the shade of her pillar when it was too hot.

Kiij let her body relax. There was no reason to worry. Nothing that she needed to be worried about ever came her way. Word seemed to have spread about the terror in the north and that pleased her. She could live her life as she wanted and right now that meant taking another nap in the sunlight so that she was well rested for hunting later.

Sasha's claws clicked on the dusty red stone that she was climbing. She kept her head down as much as possible. There was a storm brewing. The brutal winds were stirring dirt and sand up into clouds that skated along the stone and whirled into the air. She was thankful to be out of the sands of the desert even if the strange, red badlands weren't much better. At least the scenery didn't change every time a wind picked up.

After the little fox managed to scramble up the rest of the rock she lay down and curled her fluffy tail around her muzzle. She would rest here for the night and in the morning she would try to get somewhere most habitable once again. This had been her life for the last several months after she had wandered into the desert to evade a very angry wolf pack. She hoped that the mountains in the distance meant that soon this would all be over and she would have a regular life again.

Kiij awoke to the howling of the wind and the scent of dust on the air. She lifted her sleek, brown head and sneezed to clear her nose. A storm was coming through. Kiij looked up to the sky. She could still see stars and the crescent shape of the moon shining overhead. Tomorrow. The storm would not be there until tomorrow. Any thoughts of skipping the hunt tonight vanished with this development. A storm would drive pray into hiding and she could not fit into the burrows of mice nor could she fit into the dens of foxes. The end of her tail flicked against the ground before she got to her feet and stretched out her lean, powerful body. She extended her claws and scrapped them against the ground a few times before setting off into the dark her feline eyes giving her clear vision even in the black of night.

Half of an hour. That was all it had taken for the skinwalker to catch the scent of a fox skulking about nearby. Her ears flicked back and her head swiveled about to pick up on the direction the scent was coming from. When she found it she grinned almost like a wolf. She was downwind from her target. They wouldn't know of her approach until she was already upon them. Moving with swift purpose Kiij followed the sent all the way to a small cluster of rock formations. None were any taller than the average kalona stallion and all looked like easy climbs. Her bright blue eyes glinted in the light of the moon looking more like reflective pools than eyes. There was the fox, snoozing on a flat rock. Kiij laughed silently. The little vixen probably thought that she was safe up there. Never dreaming that other creatures out here could climb as well, if not better, as she could.

Kiij's stomach rumbled audibly and Kiij pressed herself flat to the ground. It was poor timing. The fox was not yet dead. If it saw her it would run. If it ran she would have to chase. A chase would mean that Kiij would need to expend more energy than she wanted to on this hunt. That was the point of hunting at night. She was at the advantage. She could see where others could not and many would be sound asleep. She couldn't get into a den but there would always be those strange spirit-touched animals that would ignore instinct and sleep in the open if the weather wasn't too bad.

Kiij waited for one minute. Then two. Then three. Always her bright eyes watched the sleeping fox. Had it heard her noisy stomach? It did not stir. Was it safe to move? Slowly, very slowly, Kiij got back to her feet though her belly still brushed against the ground. She would move in for the kill, quick and quiet, then drag her meal back to the pillar. It would be able to last hold her for a little while. She only needed to seal its fate.

The fox had not stirred nor would it ever stir again. It had been easy to take the little fox's life. She was nearly three times the vixen's size and solid muscle whereas the fox, much to Kiij's displeasure, seemed to be made of primarily fur. Kiij carried the corpse by the neck like a mother might carry a cub all the way to her bone pillar. Nothing would bother her kill there, of that she was all but certain. And if anything did try to rob her of a meal she would simply gut it or snap its neck like she had with the fox. It was a remarkably easy thing to do. She simply jumped on the creature, pinned it, and then bit down. The fox likely hadn’t even realized what had been happening to it. She had perished almost as quickly as Kiij had attacked.

Kiij rumbled happily as she dropped the fox at the base of her bone tower. The hunt couldn’t have gone any better even if the vixen had walked straight into her jaws. She rubbed her jaw idly for a moment as she surveyed the fox trying to decide what piece she wanted. Once she settled her mind Kiij lurched forward silently and began her meal. It was a good night to be a predator rather than a scavenger.

It was the sun that next roused Kiij from her slumber. It beat down on her fur coat uncomfortably leaving Kiij blinking unhappily in the late morning light as she came too. Why was she not sheltered by her bones? Kiij rolled onto her belly and looked around slowly as her senses returned to her. She spotted a patch of orange fur and everything came back to her. She had gorged herself last night, perhaps in celebration of such a good hunt. The pleasant feeling of a full belly had left her snoozing on the ground away from her bone pillar.

Kiij grumbled and heaved herself to her feet. It wasn't good to sleep in the sun, it lead to dehydration. She marched past the bones picked clean and flopped herself down in the shade cast off from the bleached tower. Kiij settled her head between her massive forepaws and sighed before drifting off once again. Hers was a good life.
