Taltherick couldn't help himself. He itched, from his beak to his pinions. The only thing that came to mind was that he was getting ready to molt, and that nearly made his crest lay flat at the though of being completely earthbound. Thankfully it only happened every so often, and he had to admit his feathers were looking a little ragged. His mother would be rather disappointed in his appearance if she saw him. Probably even try to groom him a bit, though it wouldn't do much good. It was the thought that always counted, especially for the adopted parents that took him in. He was glad for the care that they had shown him over the years, though he doubted they could sometimes understand their sky-bound son. At least they had found him the young hawk that had turned into his friend and companion. Tor'rok was his flying companion it had been fun to fledge together, and play their games in the air. Now however, for a bit, Tor'rok was going to have to fly by himself, and Taltherick was going to have to be walking.

He raised his muzzle to the air, and scented the wind. There was just the barest hint of moisture in the air, so there was not any rain coming, and his feathers weren't standing up as they did when there was about to be one of those impressive yet sometimes rather terrifying lightning storms. There may be a breeze later if the weather changed, but not too bad. It was nippy, and his feathers were fluffed a bit in the cold, which gave him all the more impression of being raggedy. The ground was frozen solid, and there was nothing good to graze on really. He had eaten yesterday, but he was going to have to go back to the river and see if he couldn't dig up some of those cat-tail roots. At least he could grab at them with his feet, unlike his parents who just had to try and paw them out of the earth with the shovel-shaped hooves of theirs. he thought back for a moment to what they were doing, and shook himself all over. It wasn't time to think on that. He used to stay with his parents when he molted, but this time, he was going to prove that he could be out on his own, and not have to have them watch over him. He was going to have to find a good place to shelter, or journey to where he would be among those that were earthbound as well. Maybe he could find some interesting things there? Just about everything fascinated him, even if he had seen it before.

He huffed, watching a cloud of steam appear before his mouth and disburse in the air around him. It was fun to play with it, though it was interesting when it froze around his beak edges. He fluffed himself a bit more, and then watched as a lone, dirty, dull yellow feather floated from the crest at his head, and made a lazy path down to the earth to settle on his knuckles. A molt during the early spring. This could certainly be interesting... and a bit cold.

User ImageDagrun had been flying for some time, testing her new feathers after her molting season. She'd come from the far west, drifting along the carrying winds. She watched the ground as she soared over it. She loved this time of year when the world woke from it's death-like slumber. It made it easy to spot interesting things from high up, or see if there was anyone worth trading tales with. The near bare branches were also easy to spot food and water through from the sky, but she never worried about that. Her life and livelihood were the tales and stories, the lore of the land. She smirked to herself, thinking how her mentor called them the lure of the land.

What was that flash of yellow? Dagrun turned her head, nearly causing herself to fly into a barrel roll. She straightened out, then made a turn to see what had caught her eye. From above, the mare circled lower to see...there it was. From up here it looked like a very big flower. Well, this just would not do. Nope. She needed to investigate what she'd seen. Flexing her wings, she glided higher into the sky, leaning to the right to come back in for a landing. She'd seen an open area not to far from the color, it would have to do.

The mare was careful to avoid the branched as she glided to the ground, at least until she reached the frozen earth. She frowned, well this was a pickle. Her keys, her precious keys of her stature, were now stuck in a bush. She was afraid if she pulled that she might break their chain. She tried to crane her head to see how they were twisted, but the leaves blocked her view. Dagrun turned her attention to the nearby area, then sighed when she saw the flash of yellow. It was another soquili. She called out, praying they were friendly. "Hey! Help! I'm stuck...please, help me!"

Tal was surprised as something flew over him, and he flinched a bit, his wings spreading wide in to his side as he looked up; his crest flaring as a dark blue flying creature came overhead, and then, he head the distinctive concussive sound of the wind was beaten away by a pair of wings. Something that big, it was probably a soquili that had just come in for a landing. What were they doing here? Though, now he was stuck with a dilemma. He was working on his molt, so it would be harder to escape if this wasn't a friendly. His wings were not cupping the wind as he needed to to get maximum traction, and his scruffy feathers were breaking the wind up and slowing him down. But on the other hand, his curiosity was incredibly peaked. This was another winged Soquili... what he had been waiting for to find. Someone who would understand the pleasure of flight, the joyous sensation of riding the currents with the ground far below you....

That did it. He started heading towards where the other had landed, carefully making his way, though now his feathers quivered with excitement, his crest nearly fully erect with excitement. The gem at his throat swayed silently as he made his way closer. And then, he heard a voice, asking for help. That surprised him, and he quickly make his way over until he could finally see the Soquili. The shakes of blue reminded him of the winter that had just passed through, and he had never anything like those curved marks on her head, that looked like they could be bone. Her feathers were sleek and shone with health. It looked as though maybe she had just passed through her own molt. He couldn't help but stare at the wings for a moment. They were beautiful, and matched the rest of her, with the dark and the light. And it was offset by a strand of keys around her body and across her chest, though it appeared when she had landed, she had gotten them caught in the bushes. He stepped forward from the trees so that the other could finally see him, his crest fluttering a bit in nervous anticipation. "Would you like me to untangle you?"

Dagrun turned sharply to the sound of the voice, her eyes wide. She wasn't afraid for herself, she seemed more worried about the chain. "Yes, please...I can't break this chain. Can you see how it's tangled?"

The mare looked at this newcomer with his ragged feathers. He was molting, it seemed. She tried to ignore it, not wanting to draw attention to it. She knew from personal experience it could be embarrassing. She did take in his coloring though, and the vest he wore...and that gem. She'd seen one before, but at the moment, she couldn't think of where.

Tal made his way over to the soquili, which he could tell now was a mare, and tore his eyes away from everything but the chain. He wanted to look at the head crest, and the scales, and the wings, and everything, but apparently that chain was very important to her, and he was really in the best area to get her out. His leaned in close to get a really good look at how it had twisted, and caught. It didn't look like it was going to be too bad. It was just going to take a little bit of manipulation. "Here goes," he mumbled under his break, and carefully lifted his left foot to work on the chain. He grabbed the branch with his beak to steady it, and used the very tips of his claws to delicately lift one chain link where it was hooked on a stub, and another that had been cuffed on a leaf. And one by one, the chains and keys became free, until finally, the last one fell back down to where it was supposed to be laying.

He took a few steps back then, and shook his wings a bit in another urge to it them, watching as some blue fluff drifted to the ground. Oh, well that was embarrassing. He gave her a smile though, as he finally was able to see the necklace laying as it should. 'I'm glad they're alright" he said. And then, he gave into his urge, and walked over to one of the trees, and started rubbing up against it, leaving bits of fluff stuck in the bark of the pine. And oh what bliss it was as he scratched harder.

Dagrun was about to thank the stallion for helping her, but he suddenly moving away to rub against a tree. She tried to hide her smile, knowing that it was very itchy. She walked closer to him. "Thank you for helping me. I don't know what I would do if I broke these..."

She indicated the chains and keys, then gestured toward him. "May I help you in return? Rubbing is only going to make it worse....you need some soothing cool water to ease the itching."

The mare concentrated a little, forming a cooling mist around the stallion to try and calm the burning itch from his molting. She tilted her head to see if it worked. "Is that better?"

Tal had been itching a bit harder when the mare spoke, and then suddenly there was a mist around him. He was fascinated by it; so great was his fascination that he didn't even notice at first that the itching in his wings was currently gone, though several more blue and gold feathers littered the ground around him. When she asked if it he felt better, he blinked at her a few times, trying to fathom what she meant. She had just moved water... through the air. What could be better then watching that happen?! He wildly wondered if he could do something like that. Lightning. Yeah, that would be fun. Or controlling fire. No wait! Wind! He could hold himself aloft much longer with wind! And make the current bend to his will to make for easier flying.

Tal was so wrapped up in the images his imagination was conjuring for him, that he rather forgot the question that the mare had politely asked him. He was too busy prancing in his head towards imaginary mares (all earthbound as that was what he had been raised with), with crackles of energy splitting the air behind him, and he with a very stallion-like strut. Or tossing fire around to the awe and wonder of those watching. He could also be hovering in place, barely moving his wings as a small cyclone held him aloft, and the mares all squealed with delight, and the young colts looked at him with awe.

Dagrun chuckled, wondering if the stallion was alright indeed. He seemed to have been mystified by the cool mist around him. "Are, you alright? Was it too cold? Hello?"

She tilted her head, cautiously reaching out to gently nudge him.

He blinked a few times again as she gently nudged him, pulling his mind back from the far reaches where they had gone. Yes, he was supposed to be paying attention to the mare before him who probably thought of him as featherbrained after that adventure in his head.

"Ah, yes, sorry. I was... thinking. No, that wasn't to cold, and it does feel much better." As he was speaking, his front feet started to shift in excitement as he was thinking about what she had done again... and he didn't have much practice in containing it, so the thoughts burst from his head into speech. "That was Amazing! How did you do that?! Do you think I could do that at one point? How did you make the water do that? And then suddenly it was just mist and it was everywhere! Does it hurt when you do that? Where did you learn?" Tal had to stop for a moment to breath as he had asked all of the questions currently in his head in one breath, though there were more bubbling inside. His light teal eyes just danced with excitement, as the rest of his body squirmed with all the energy he felt; his wings fanning slightly to the side and then nearly folding back down before fanning out a bit more.

The mare chuckled, he head feathers bouncing slightly. She shook her head, waving a claw. "I'm half ulun'suti, and they can control the elements. I can only make a little water at a time. It doesn't hurt...it's just a natural thing."

Dagrun looked around, then up at the sky. "We should find you some cool mud. It's better for the itching. Unfortunately we can't fly with your wings like that. Do you know where a steam is near by?"

"Uulun.... Uhlong....ulah-suthi?" The words she had used to describe herself sounded almost foreign, and he had never heard of it. he was sure his pronunciation was off, but it was the best he could do at the moment. And what was this about controlling the elements? "You can control all the elements? That would be useful, especially during the colder months like now. Though thankfully spring is coming!" With that thought, his mothers words echoed in his head about manners and being polite, and caused him to stuff that excited energy he was feeling into a little box inside, that looked much like the little gem he always had with him. He was still young though, and one of his claws still twitched so that he couldn't stand completely still.

When he spoke again, he tried to keep his tone as that of a gentleman, much as he had heard his father speak to others. "I do actually know of a river nearby, and it doesn't even have ice on it, though I am certain the mud will be rather chilly. I was planning on going and digging up some cattail roots from there later to eat, if you would like some as well." His eyeridges furrowed a bit as the rest of what she said had sunk in. "I... was planning on walking anyway. I'm not sure why we would need to fly. It's only a short walk from here. Won't take 20 minutes."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 05, 2014 3:42 pm

"Ulun'suti," she corrected him gently, smiling happily. She shook her head in answer to his comment about the elements. "You misunderstand...I can only control one element, water. So, I'm more useful when it's hot..."

She looked down shyly, nodding. "The walk will be enjoyable. I've flown quite a distance looking for a new story to add to my collection."

Dagrun blinked, realizing she'd forgotten her manners. She bowed slightly, her chains and keys jangling. "My name is Dagrun and I am a lore keeper. I travel and collect tales, and sometimes I learn from them..."

She paused when he mentioned food. "Cattails would be a welcomed treat, thank you. Please...lead the way."

"Thank you," he replied as she pronounced the unfamiliar word again, though he didn't feel up to trying it once more. He would have to ask his father if he had heard of them before, and maybe help him to pronounce it. "You can only control one element? That's still better then me. I can't control any... at least, not that I know of." He gave a sheepish grin, more at an inside joke that she wouldn't understand unless she had met his mother. Once the mare introduced herself, he felt mortified that he himself had not introduced himself either.

"Forgive me. My name is Taltherick Evadorn, but my family generally just calls me 'Tal', or 'Talon'. Whichever you would prefer. I don't have any neat titles. I'm just me, but if you're looking for a great tale, you should meet my dad. I'm not sure if any of them are true, but he can certainly concoct some wild stories." At the mention of the cattails, he spread a wing to indicate the direction of the river, and then noticed one of his primaries was looking very crooked and ready to fall out, and tucked his wing back to his side. "Um, this way if you wouldn't mind."
PostPosted: Wed Feb 05, 2014 5:27 pm

"You don't know if you can control elements?" Dagrun tilted her head, walking in the direction he'd indicated. "It shouldn't be a mystery...you either can or can't. It's inherent. If you haven't done it by now, being grown, it's safe to assume you don't have the ability."

She stopped, then ducked her head. "Forgive me...that came out rude. It wasn't my intention. Tell me about your father and his tales. Do you know any of them? I should like to hear them."

Suddenly, the mare burst out laughing. She stopped in her tracks and laughed, her voice filling the trees. "Oh...oh, dear. I'm not usually so formal. You were being formal and I did not want to offend. I'm so used to prim and proper at me home...it's actually why I prefer to travel and collect stories. Can we be more relaxed?"
