Pyper bent her head to drink from the stream that ran near her home. She noticed some small fish darting around under the surface. She smiled at the silvery little flecks. She always liked watching the smaller animals around her. Gizmo had her nose to the ground, sniffing her way towards the smell of water. She pawed softly towards the stream, and saw a bush where she hid and checked out the area.
She saw some fish swimming in the stream and licked her lips at the thought of a tasty lunch. She inched forward from the bush and eased up to the edge of the water. Her attention was focused on the fish, so she didn't notice the Soquili standing nearby.Pyper bent to drink some more water, and nibbled at some greens sticking up out of the water. She stood to chew and noticed something pink from the corner of her eye. She looked in the direction and saw a little bobcat stalking some of the fish she'd seen earlier. Gizmo crouched low and readied herself to pounce at a fish that had gotten very near the water's edge. As she started to move, her paw slipped in some mud and she fell face first into the water.Pyper had watched the little bobcat, and giggled as it splashed and sputtered trying to get back out of the water. She walked over and bent down to the bobcat. "Are you okay?" she asked sweetly.Gizmo splashed and tried standing back up, but her paws kept slipping on the mud and slick rocks. Her head was still above water, but she couldn't get her footing. She paddled just a little in the water and was able to stand.
The voice of the soquili standing above her startled her a little, She looked up at it and grimaced. "No. I'm not. I hate the water." She trudged slowly out of the water, and tried climbing back out of the stream. She sat and pouted, angry that she was wet.Pyper smiled at the bobcat and watched as she got back out of the water. "It's not that bad. I guess you missed your fish too, huh?"Gizmo started licking herself to clean her fur, and sighed. "Yeah, it would have been a great lunch if I could have caught it." "You could always try again. There are lots more fish in the stream.""No, I think getting wet once is enough for one day." she continued with her bath. She giggled, "Okay. Well, I'm sure you'll find something yummy to eat." She looked around and saw some berry bushes nearby. "Do you like berries?" she asked. She licked her paw and rubbed it against her face. "Nah, not interested in berries. I like....meaty food." She smiled, flashing some fangs."Ah, I see." she said, and stepped over to get some of the mentioned berries. "More for me then." She smiled between bites. "I'm Pyper by the way."Gizmo chuckled. "Yeah, you can have all the berries." She watched the soquili eat a few. "I've never tried any, but they look too planty for me. Anything that grows out of the ground just isn't for me." Satisfied that she was clean enough, she stood and walked back to the water's edge, looking longingly at the fish again. "Another day fishies."
She looked back at the soquili eating her berries. "I'm Gizmo. Nice to meet ya."

After Pyper had her fill of the berries, she looked around to see where the little bobcat had gone.
Gizmo watched her eat for a moment, then decided she might try to catch something else to eat. She snuck away from Pyper, and sniffed the air and ground for the scent of something tasty. She caught a whiff of a mouse, or other rodent and followed the trail to a small hole at the base of a tree. That seemed like more work than it would prosper, so she moved on, sniffing around for something else. Her ears perked at a rustling sound nearby.
Pyper walked slowly looking around for any flash of color to give away the location of the bobcat. Through some bushes she could see a flash of pink moving nearby. She stepped quietly towards it.
Gizmo hunched down and crawled towards the sound, sneaking her way into some bushes, staying as quiet as possible.
Pyper got closer to the bushes, watching for the flashes of pink that seemed to be staying in one small area, but moving towards her at the same time.
Gizmo caught a familiar scent on the air and saw something black through the branches of a bush. "ooo dinner!" she thought, and pounced out of the bush, bumping right into Pyper's leg.
Pyper was startled by the bobcat's sudden attachment to her leg. "Hey now! I'm not your lunch," she chuckled.
Gizmo regained her composure and shook her head. "No,..no you're not." she grumbled, as she turned away to look for food again. "You're also not helping me find anything by stumbling around making noise."
"I'm sorry. Would you like me to help you?" she asked sweetly. "I wouldn't mind."
"What could you do? You don't have the claws of a bobcat, the fangs of a bobcat or the ears of a bobcat. You have hooves...and well...that's about it." Gizmo looked her over. "But hey, if you can do something I can't, then that just means I get to eat sooner than later."
She paused to think. "Let's split up. You go that way" she said, pointing her paw towards the left, "and I'll go this way" she pointed her paw in front of her. If you find something, just call my name."
"Ok," Pyper agreed, "This might be kind of fun. So nothing planty or leafy, right. I'll see what I can find."
Pyper started off in the direction Gizmo had pointed, which incidently took her back towards the stream where Gizmo had lost her fish.
Gizmo chuckled to herself. She really didn't expect the mare to actually be of any help in finding her food. It was just to keep her out of her way. Gizmo caught the scent of another small animal and was back on the prowl.
Pyper came to the stream, and saw many fish still swimming just under the surface. A large branch crossed the stream nearby, allowing the water to pool up behind it and spill over. A couple fish swam next to the branch, unable to continue their path downstream. This gave her an idea. She looked around and found another large branch on the bank. She took a twig attached to it in her mouth and dragged it over into the water, on the other side of the fish swimming near the branch, trapping them in that small area. She used her hoof to push the branch closer until the fish couldn't move very much at all. Having never caught a fish before, she bent down and opened her mouth just above the water. She closed her eyes and dove her snout into the water, closing her teeth, hoping she got hold of a fish. Her first bite came up emtpy, but she tried again and felt the fish flapping against her face. She tried keeping her eyes open this time, and was successful! She raised her head up, the fish flapping against her face. Excited that she had caught the fish, she quickly got out of the water and brought the fish to land. She stood far enough away from the bank and dropped the fish on the ground and called out, "GIZMO! Quick! Come to the stream!"
Gizmo had followed the scent trail of a squirrel, catching glimpses of it running in the trees overhead. She watched overhead as she paced under a tree, looking for the best way to climb the tree, when she heard Pyper call her name. "Oh drat. Now what.." she said, not wanting to leave her prey to find out, but also really hoping that the mare had found something better. Torn between the decision, she paced back and forth another few seconds before darting off towards Pyper's voice.
Pyper heard the bobcat running quickly towards her. She beamed at her as she came into view. "Look! I caught you a fish!"
Gizmo's jaw dropped as she looked down and saw the fish, flopping and gasping for breath. She couldn't believe that this Soquili had caught a fish for her. "Well, look at that! Not bad, not bad at all." She stepped on the fish, keeping it in place with one paw while she bent down and took a big bite. "I might have to keep you around," Gizmo said as she chewed. "We could make a great pair, you know."
Pyper chuckled at the bobcat. "You know, I was just thinking the same thing." She smiled at her and watched her eat the rest of the fish. "Do you wanna see how I caught it?" Pyper asked.
Gizmo swallowed the last bite and licked her lips and paws."Sure," she said, "I'd love to see how you caught it with those big hooves of yours.
They spent the rest of the day Pyper showing Gizmo how she had caught the fish, and then napping on the bank nearby. From that day on, Pyper and Gizmo were inseperable.
