It was early in the morning, before the pumpkin sun had managed to creep over the horizon and fill the world with its gentle light, that a knock was heard on Marosa's door. It was quiet, tapping twice in quick rhythm before falling silent.

At this point, Marosa was sick of Scarentines. He was sick of feeling guilty, and he was sick of his depression.

Unfortunately, just wishing problems would go away didn't actually make them go away.

The faerie had been pacing around in his room, wings fluttering in an agitated manner as he attempted to calm himself before a knock sounded at the door. He wasn't expecting company, so his curiosity overwhelmed him at trying to figure out who it was.

Marosa walked to the door and opened it.

Cutting an imposing figure as she stood in the doorway, Riley lifted her head just enough so her eyes leveled with the boil, narrowing almost imperceptibly as she recognized him. She was in the right dorm, all right, but her intentions were entirely enigmatic. She lifted one hand, pressed it on the doorframe, and leaned in just enough so that it would be impossible to slam the door in her face without injury. Just enough, without imposing, and yet cementing her presence all the same.

Good morning, Marosa. Riley's voice was smooth, like silk, slipping into his thoughts. Do you remember me? I hope you do. How disappointed I would be if you said no.

She lifted her other hand, and inspected her long, razorsharp claws. May I come in for a moment? Just for a little chat.

Ah, another incident. "Aye, oi remember ye." He'd befriended Roch earlier, perhaps she had the same intent?

Inclining his head slightly, Marosa moved aside and allowed her in. "Be me guest." The faerie had an inkling of what this was about, so he figured he'd start.

"Oi dinnae know if Roch told ye, but he ha' a talk with me and oi have tae admit oi was rather... stupid." He stared up at her now, closing the door and leaning against it. "Oi'm sorry oi dinnae tink."

Riley looked genuinely surprised when he mentioned Roch. The boil came to you? She asked, curious as to why, exactly, Roch had ignored her request. Curious.. The word was as smooth as her movement into the room, stopping near the bookcase and turning in a swift movement. The palms of her hands settled on the edge that jutted out of the bookcase, and she leaned back, resting against it.

That's very noble of you, admitting your mistake like that. You're doing half of the work for me. What am I supposed to do, if you remove the element of reprimand? Shall I sit here and spank you for your bad behavior? There is nothing left for me to do, I suppose. The words were even, almost cautiously so. I am glad you understand that what you did was wrong. I know your intentions.. must have been good. Somehow. But you were given a leader, and a task. You failed both.

Here, her eyes crinkled, the white orbs crescenting carefully. Amityville is just full of failures.

Marosa sighed, reaching up to run his hands through his hair. "Aye."

He tilted his head as he listened to her, lips pursed slightly. "Oi've already been reprimanded by two. Do ye want tae be th' third? Oi'll pass on th' spankin'." Grimacing at that thought, the faerie wasn't sure how to take this ghoul at all.

"Aye. Oi'm jes a failure all 'round." He was, and she could see it in his eyes - depression, guilt, and an underlying sadness that he just couldn't get rid of. "Oi s'pose tat's why oi'm 'eer."

Self-deprecation. Riley felt the self-loathing coming off of the boil in waves. Her eyes fluttered for a moment, before closing, and shaking her head. That's a shame. She murmured quietly. Truly a shame. Most people come here to change that. You seem to have resigned to your fate. There, at the very edge of her last words, was the first emotion she'd exhibited since she'd arrived. A sense of disgust, of nauseating loathing that just barely tinged her thoughts. Keep that up, and you'll be dead in a week. She pushed herself up off the bookcase, and took silent, cautious steps until she stood directly in front of him. Her long claws were there between them without warning, sliding down the smallest length of the hair that hung loose on his shoulder. The hairs they touched split at the ends, revealing the sharpness of the tip.

I am rather fond of some of the people at this school. Did you know that? We learn to carry on, despite our insecurities and our faults, because we have each other. Her eyebrows lifted, just a hair. Jericho is one of those people. Very important to me. But if I spent all of my time reprimanding people who failed me, I believe I wouldn't have time for anything else. So no, Marosa, I'm not here to tell you that you did anything wrong. Her hand folded in on itself and fell to her side. You're doing a bang up job of that, on your own.

His eyes narrowed as he stared up at her, and he could feel the emotion that leaked from her.

It felt like the same emotion from his own father.

"Nae. Ye misunderstan'. Tat's why oi'm here -- tae change my fate." The faerie didn't even realize his knuckles were white and numb from his fingers digging into his palms. He didn't even blink as she split his hairs, but he was damn wary of how close she was.

"Aye, oi am. And oi'm tryin', oi'm tryin'. Ye may have a ton o' friends, but oi'm still tryin' tae find th' balance and so far oi've only made two friends here. And oi'm tryin' nae te get 'em killed, 'cuz it seems tat everyone oi get close to dies." He closed his eyes, emotion bubbling up within him and threatening to spill out. He was freaking out, and he didn't want to lose control, visibly attempting to calm down.

"Oi hurt everythin' oi touch, but oi need tae touch tae survive. Oi'm learning tae live wit' tat."

Hurting everything he touched. This, perhaps, brought a legitimate reaction from the mindflayer. She was all too aware of the phrase, and of how it felt. In fact, she'd just finished having a conversation with her Malodore that mirrored a similar thread of thought - too close for comfort. Her eyes flattened in annoyance, and then lifted in something closer to curiosity. Her hand snaked out and wrapped around his wrist. It was a sharp, jabbed movement, meant to be quick enough to be surprising. When her hand stopped moving, his palm was already flat on the bones of her clavicle.

Funny. Riley's thoughts seemed sharper, clearer, now that she wasn't hiding. I don't seem to feel a thing.

Marosa stiffened, staring at her with a shocked expression, and then realization mixed with a slight emptiness he had barely felt before. His eyes were wide as they stared at her, but he was unable to hold the stare, looking away and at nothing as his eyes zoned on the air between them.

"Ye must luv someone dearly, ten. It don't work on to's in love." He didn't dare move, his expression slowly going into shock. The faerie wasn't sure he could take much more of this.

The surprise that bloomed within him was almost palpable. It was a physical presence, hovering between them, and she cocked her head as she tasted it. She hadn't expected something that strong, even with her movements as quick as they were. There was something else surprising him, and it was given attention in his words. So, of course, she asked.

.. It?

Somehow she was sure the answer was going to be better than whatever she'd expected when she walked in that day.

"Oi'm a Gancanagh. Our touch proves fatal to t'ose we come in contact with, except for t'os in luv." He was shivering now, still attempting to keep in his emotions as his fingers curled, eyes still refusing to meet the mindflayer's.

Of course, his mind was on something else entirely. Somehow, she seemed kinder than his father, if only slightly. Da'luagh was known for his cruelty, and Marosa was no exception. The only thing he was good for was being used as a tool.

Marosa didn't want to be a tool... but he had no idea how to dig himself out of the hole that was dug for him, or was it the hole he dug for himself?

The faerie didn't even know anymore.

Riley felt and overabundance of clarity about the boil. It was laughable, really - when she left him alone, and took to her own private thoughts, she would probably have a chuckle about it. But here, in his presence, he was nothing but polite, and intrigued. Fatal.. She let his hand go. So you weren't being metaphorical when you said you hurt anyone you touch. I was. Here, she allowed herself a faint chuckle. I can see how that might be a problem. Having trouble finding connections, with an ability like that, I take it? Her hand lifted, very slowly this time. The back of her pointer finger brushed up the length of his jaw. The living thrive off of contact. The heart beats, throbbing with power, pushing blood to the surface, as if it was calling out for another. Her finger turned, and the claw grazed down the side of his face. He could feel the sharpness cutting into the skin, just enough to scratch, never breaking the skin. Funny how it all works.

Then, the tip pricked the surface, bringing a bead of blood swelling out from his skin. She pulled her hand away, and rose both of her eyebrows. So fragile. So easily broken. So easily used. Perhaps your powers are a blessing, and a curse, mmm? Her eyes crescented in lieu of a smile. You wouldn't want anyone getting too close. You could get hurt, too.

Marosa was unable to keep his body from shivering. His eyes now met hers again, unflinching when her finger slid across his skin. He sucked in a breath when her finger pricked him, feeling the drop of blood trickle down his cheek.

"Aye." He closed up like a clam, eyes wary as he became guarded. The faerie was unsure now, searching for some kind of tell in the mindflayer.

Disappointment flickered across her gaze when he closed up on her. She turned on her heel, walking back to her original position and turning again to lean on the bookcase. So that is your final decision? To be alone, so you can't hurt anyone, and they can't hurt you? Is this what your time here has taught you? Because from what I recall from a few seconds ago, I do believe you said you were trying to find a balance. Her head tilted to one side, the tentacles sliding against her shoulder. And that is not balance. You can't just accept the inevitable. If you do, your time here is pointless. Your existence is pointless. Her eyes narrowed to slits. And your presence here endangers us all.

And this, evident in the sharp honesty of her words, was why she was actually here. I love. Therefore, I protect. She wasn't here to reprimand him, or tell him what to do. She was here to make sure he wasn't the weak link in the chain.

And so far, he was failing.

You can't hurt me. And, I don't just mean your little trick. So, I am your soundboard. If you've got a plan, some way you think you can make a difference, make a change, that is when you come to me, and ask my opinion. Her hands tightened on the wood of the bookcase, nails biting into it and leaving clawmarks. You do not jump in on your own and potentially get us killed.

Ah. Yes. Hadn't quite gotten over that one, had she.
