This had been a really bad idea. Gabriel showed up around the corner of the speed dating booth, after looking up who he was supposed to meet. He had absolutely no idea who this Moriko person was, but he was sure that, whoever they might be, their meeting would probably be a disaster. That's what he'd done, he'd signed up for a disaster, hadn't he? He couldn't help himself. This had been the only thing he'd done today that didn't feel like.. like he was out on a date. This was hilariously ironic, since the activity was CALLED dating. But this was just for kicks, just for fun. Just to meet someone new and say, hello, awkwardly. Then probably stare at one another for ten minutes while thinking of something to say, before giving up and going their separate ways. This was what Gabby felt sure he had in store for himself, by signing up for this speed date. He'd feel sorry for this Moriko person, if he cared enough to bother.

What had she gotten herself into? Moriko* settled down on the blanket she had been directed to. This was the last time she was ever going to let Sophie talk her into something like this. Sure she should probably meet new people, but perhaps there had been a better way to go about it? Shaking her head at the idea of 'dating', Moriko shuffled through the contents of the basket. She noted the chocolates and the soda but avoided both of them. The event had already provided her with more sweets than she should eat for one day. Checking to see if there was anything more in the basket, she peered in and noted a stack of cards. 'Wonder what these are.' She mumbled to herself as she fished them out of the basket. Curious, Moriko leafed through a few of them. 'Baby did you fart, ’cause you blow me away!' and 'You turn my software into hardware!' were all she needed to see before she hastily tucked the cards back into the bottom of the basket. Clearly they wouldn't be of any help to her at all. Was it too late to get out of here before her 'date' showed up? She was seriously considering the notion when someone approached. "Uh....Hi there." She started off with a 'deer in the headlights' stare. [*Sorry still waiting on official art. This is the closest I have.]

Blanket. Basket. Ghoul. Check. Gabby heard the greeting, and responded by sitting down very quickly on the blanket and taking in a sharp sigh. Friendliness was.. not his forte. But perhaps that was the driving reason why he'd signed up for this in the first place.. forced contact. He didn't have much of a choice. That made it easier. "Sup." Gabby waved his hand sharply, just once, and then made a face at his own ineptitude and let his hand flop back down. "I'm Gabriel." First steps taken. Baby steps, at the most, but more than he would have normally considered doing in a random encounter. Plus, there was a basket to deal with - that would help with idle hands. He leaned in to take a look. "What'd we score?"

"Nice to meet you, I'm Moriko." Well this certainly was going to be awkward now wasn't it? She was relieved when he asked about the basket. Sure it was small talk but at least it gave them a place to start. It was certainly better than sitting there in awkward silence for the entire 'date'. "Well, there seems to be some cans of soda, chocolate, and some rather amusing cards. I think they're meant to get us talking, but I'm not sure I've heard cheesier pick up lines before." Moriko was curious as to who had created those and if anyone ever thought they would actually work. If anyone ever tried to use one on her she'd be more likely to punch them then go out with them.

Chocolate and soda sounded pretty good, but cards? Cards with cheesy pick up lines? What the hell did they think they were going to be doing on this date? Gabby moved in to reach into the basket, but he stopped, giving her a cautious look that sort of said 'may I?' without really waiting for a response. Then he dug in, plucking a soda out for himself and a little bag of chocolate mints. While he tore them open with his teeth, he picked up a card, and almost choked. "You weren't kidding. I'm a little worried about the guy who wrote this. Is he just.. like.. imagining a bunch of us teenagers sitting around on these blankets using pick up lines until something happens?" ... Gabby started looking around for cameras.

Unsure of what to do, Moriko nabbed a soda out of the basket and opened it. At least if she had something in her hands it would keep her from twiddling her thumbs. "Nope, they're pretty awful aren't they?" She chuckled at the thought of someone actually trying to use those lines. "I guess in a way they sort of worked didn't they? I mean, it gives us something to talk about. Though i feel bad for anyone who actually tries to use them." Sitting for a moment in awkward silence, Moriko had an idea. "Here let me see one." She grabbed out one of the cards at random and looked it over. Well, they might be cheesy but at least they might be entertaining. She snorted as she read the card but managed to take a deep breath and keep a straight face. "Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?" She said as sincerely as she could.

"Awful doesn't even cut it." Gabby sat back, popping his soda open and taking a hard swig. His head tilted forward again just in time to see the ghoul deadpan a line that didn't work without an accessory. He stared, and stared, for almost 15 seconds, before he finally burst in a single breathy laugh, and shook his head. "You're not even doing it right. Listen to what it's saying, you gotta - hold on." He searched around in the basket until he found a napkin, and then he got up on his knees, and held the napkin up to her face. His eyes glittered with mischief, as he pulled off what was a very believable pick up voice. "Hey, does this rag smell like chloroform to you?" He wiggled it in front of her face.

She had to admit he was right. It really wasn't the same without the rag. She watched him for a minute while he dug out the napkin and then proceeded to recite the line with much more finesse then she had been able to. What on earth had they been thinking putting those cards in there? At least they were entertaining. "Alright you win, you definitely do that better than me." She laughed as she grabbed the napkin. "Alright let me try a different one." She sorted through the cards again until she came to a particularly terrible one. "If you were a booger I would pick you first." She told him as sweetly as she could.

Gabriel liked winning. He liked it a lot. So when she announced his victory, the grin on his face was wild and toothy. He sat back down and waited for her rebuttal, sure that there was no contest. He was right. "AUGH," He snorted with laughter. "That line is sure to send any ghoul running for the hills, geez. Nice try though, good delivery. But.. augh." Maybe there were some who would find that romantic. It took all kinds. But for Gabby, that was just gross. "So, chocolate and soda, that's all the food they gave us, huh?" He sounded vaguely disappointed. "Kind of cheap if you ask me. They should have at least sprung for some kind of meat, or something.."

Moriko broke out with laughter after delivering the line. It had been quite ridiculous but she hadn't been able to resist. Maybe their 'date' hadn't been romantic so far, but at least it had been amusing. Then again they couldn't recite the lines forever. "Meat would have been a nice touch. Something a little less sweet at least. I think they're trying to fatten us up with all of this chocolate and soda." She was about to take a drink of the one in her hand but decided maybe she wouldn't. "So..." Moriko paused for a moment, trying to think of something to say. "Do you have any hobbies?" It was a lame question she knew, but social interactions with strangers had never been her strength.

The mere idea of fattening him up was laughable. So Gabriel laughed at it. Unfortunately, the moment of ease passed, and then they were back to being awkward and trivial. It was a shame, actually - he'd just been starting to feel comfortable. At least, as comfortable as he could manage. "Uh." The question made him think too hard. He flopped down on the blanket, all that wispy white hair flopping into coils and halos around his head. "Don't really have any yet. No, I guess that's not true. I think the real answer is that my only hobby right now is.. finding out what my hobbies are. If that makes sense?" He didn't know how well the ghoul understood the newly deceased. "I've been alone for so long, doing nothing - this place, Amityville, this is my first chance to actually do things. Or whatever. So I don't really know yet. My only interest is in finding out what my interests are." He had some inklings of what kinds of things he might be interested in.. but he hadn't tried a single one so far. He flipped the question back. "You?"

Moriko listened patiently as Gabriel spoke. She found it a bit odd to not know what your interests were, but she did understand him to a certain degree. Certainly when you first start out in life you never know what you like until you try it. "I think I understand." She nodded slowly. "Me? Hmm, well I knit a little though not very well. I'm interested in fighting but I need to find someone to teach me. I like running and just anything physical to keep myself in shape. I also love cats. They're so cute and warm and fuzzy. Not to mention they are generally self sufficient but love to cuddle with you from time to time." Realizing she was rambling on a bit, Moriko forced herself to take a breath and pause for a moment. It would be rude of her to dominate the conversation. Besides, he might start to think she was a crazy cat lady. Even if it was partially true.

She was a crazy cat lady. Gabriel sat up just enough to take one last swig of his soda, and started pilfering the contents of the basket. "That's cool." He muttered distractedly. "You better get out whatever you want from this basket, though. I think our times almost up, and we totally did our part, so we deserve the spoils of our hard work." He threw her one of the little chocolate balls filled with nuts in it. "Such hard work." He repeated, though this time one side of his lips lifted in a half-smirk, giving her a knowing look. "So, do me a favor. If we're ever in the same class, or whatever.. you can say hi to me. Okay? I don't really know that many people around here. And if I managed absolutely nothing after going through all this trouble to sign up for this damn thing.. well.." He scratched the back of his head with one hand. "I'll be pretty annoyed."

Yeah, she probably shouldn't have mentioned the cats. Oh well, too late now. "Sure!" She caught the candy as he tossed it to her. She didn't really know anyone either so it would be nice to be able to talk to someone. And perhaps the next time they met it wouldn't be quite so... awkward. Not that she hadn't enjoyed herself, but their 'date' had lost some of the ease that it had started out with. Carrying a normal conversation with a stranger was difficult for Moriko and she only ever made things worse. She tried to think of something more to say as she dug a couple more candies out of the basket. Moriko thought about taking the cards as well, perhaps to save the next poor b*****d who tried to use them. However, she really didn't want to have to look at anymore of them so she left them. Thankfully the buzzer went off then and she was spared having to come up with another topic. "That certainly could have been worse." She grinned at Gabrielle. "Thanks for enduring it with me." Nodding her head to him in thanks, she picked herself up off the blanket. No way was she going to let Sophie talk her into something like that again.

Having stuffed candy into his pocket and taken another soda for the road, Gabriel stood up off the blanket as well, and checked to make sure he hadn't dropped anything. "Yeah. That could have been really weird. Glad it wasn't." He shuffled back a step, and gave her a wink. "See you around, Moriko." Patting his loot, he turned and walked back to the festival, comfortable with how things had gone, but happy to be leaving nonetheless.
