They were camped outside the city, the vibrant colors of his tattered rag flag fluttering above Warwick's battered old caravan. The trip across the country side had been shockingly long, and had left both him and Wren just a bit bruised -- both physically, from the jostle of a somewhat-rickety back wheel, and emotionally, from the reaching hands, bright eyes, and need for reassurance they'd gotten from almost every single person on the road...

A fire was lit, despite the early hour, both to stave off the winter's chill and to heat water for his tea, but Warwick didn't sit beside it. Instead, mug in hand, he paced the confines of his small camp, Wren's pale head swaying as she followed his motions back and forth and around and over again. Her expression was quiet, and her voice impossible soft:

"Be still."

And if anything could have stilled him, this would be it: his shoulders twitching and head turned toward her for a moment. Only a moment. Then he eased back into motion and the breath spilled out of her in a sigh.

At last, the orders had been filled. Well, except for the few that needed more attention to detail, but pay no mind to those. Aelius was ready to get out of the stuffy old forge, to get the smell of sulfur and metal out of his bones. No sooner had he nudged his chosen awake (more like pulling all the covers off of her, and when that didn't work, pulling her and the covers off), and escaped her wrath, he was out the door. With careful precision, the buck raced out of the city, Rosalie all but screaming apologies to those he nearly jostled from upon his back, clinging for dear life to his horns, and took one majestic leap over a small sheep that happened to be in the way. Freedom! Dear sweet freedom!

He headed for the pastures right outside the city walls, where few ever strayed, and wasn't going to bother about avoiding camps. He was headed straight for it, when he suddenly veered to go past it instead, and with his chosen's grip weakening, it shouldn't have been any surprise when she fell off on the outskirts of Warwick's camp. The redhead would have screamed, had she not been trying to warn the damn buck she was slipping, and the last words she got out were...

"BLOODY DAMMIT AELIUS SLOW THE--"

Oof. Luckily there hadn't been any rocks on her landing pad, though she skidded a little bit. In a bit of shock, she coughed out the air that seemed to have wedged itself in her throat, not quite forced out by the impact. Carefully, she sat up, rubbing her cheek, now scratched from the impact. Nothing broken. She thought, at least. And he was still prancing around, he was going to get words, this one was. The smith was about to start rolling off the curses to the high heavens when she realized two sets of eyes were watching (or were they?) and she stopped herself right in time.

Well.

This was awkward.

Wren was a vision of grace and elegance: long-limbed with a carefully arched neck, green eyes that glowed luminously in the fading light. Even if the girl had never seen an Awakened Guardian, Wren stood out as something different from the norm. Perhaps it was the thought behind her eyes, the strangely human edge to her expressions.

In contrast, Warwick was ridiculous. His vibrantly colored rags couldn't be entirely muted by the dust of the road, his hair was wild and, currently, two-toned, whatever dye he used fading out to leave a healthy inch or two of dark roots. His face was smudged, and just a hint of a tattoo stood out above the collar of his many-times-patched coat.

They were a pair. The only thing that had any luck tying them together was the jingle of a bell around Wren's neck, the brightly-braided colors, and the matching wear of travel.

"...Uh." He stared down at the girl, and then back to Wren, and at the very least his pacing was hauled to a halt. "Quite a spill, hey? Ye alright?"

Rosalie met Wren's eyes in pure awe. She hadn't ever seen an Awakened Guardian, and while she did recognize that the graceful creature was something akin to her own guardian, she had yet to know fully of her power. However, the brightly colored Warwick was soon to steal her gaze away, She hadn't ever seen so many colors in a place other than perhaps a tailor's shop, even if they were dulled from travel.

Carefully, staggering a bit, she managed to get to her feet, and began to brush the wet dirt and slow off of her clothing. Her hands stung to high heaven, but they'd stop in due time. So much for not wanting to wear gloves.... "I'm....I'm fine." She managed breathlessly, breath freezing in the air. It seemed like it could be magic at that moment, and she couldn't keep her eyes from darting between the two. Who were they, what was she? So many questions were firing away in her mind until...

Aelius finally noticed that there was nothing on his back, and glanced back towards whence he came. Now when had she gotten off? The buck then noticed the rather evident imprint of his chosen in the snow, even the skid up to it, and froze. Oh no she was going to be mad, wasn't she? He carefully prodded at her through their link, only to have rather serious eyes upon him. Head hung low, he made his way over, sending over how guilty he felt about it all.

He would have made it all the way over too, except he stopped, also in awe of the rather graceful eminence of Wren. Now this was different! However, with a little more prodding, he did make his way over to his chosen's side, sniffing at her hand. She wasn't too terribly hurt was she?

It seemed, the more Rosalie looked at her, that Wren was amused by the slack-jawed awe. When the girl looked to her Guardian, Wren shifted -- standing slowly, and perhaps Rosalie would be surprised by her size. Larger than Aelius, maybe, but not the towering bulk of what many expected from an awakened Guardian. She was slim, willowy, not frail but...not the bulk one might have expected.

She eased in beside Warwick, the bulk of her body against his side -- warming, quiet, thoughtful, her head tipped up near his ear to say something too soft for anyone to pick up on. In response, he stepped forward, coat pulled in close around himself, to look her over a bit.

"I've got some rags and water, if you want to wash it off and make sure --"

Rosalie was careful after Warwick approached her to not completely ignore him, though the grace of the awakened doe was hard to ignore. Watching her lean against him, almost as if she was talking to him, was also fascinating, and it was almost as mystical as the Ward Tree itself. She found herself no longer clutching as hard to her cloak to keep warm, far too enthralled with both guardian and chosen to remember.

Aelius was already begging forgiveness from her, nuzzling her hair with his nose. Oh poor poor Rosalie! He was so sorry, and wasn't giving a second of silence in their bond, completely concerned with the scrapes and bruises that would be revealing themselves.

"That would be.....Wonderful. I'm terribly sorry I..." She managed to choke out, still partially in shock from the fall. Her hands were still shaking, and she was finally starting to calm down.

It looked more like she was kicking in to some kind of shock, to Warwick. His head tipped, he watched her for another moment before offering her his hand. Behind him, Wren went still, perhaps recognizing the edge of panic in the girl. Not a movement. She hardly seemed to breathe.

"Come on, then, step back and sit down..." He worked to guide her in closer, next to his fire, so that she could sit. Something was cooking in a battered old pot: beans, maybe. It smelled like beans.

Rosalie was forever grateful to Warwick as he helped her to the fire's side, Aelius close by on her other side in case she happened to take another spill. She sat down, finally remembering the cold as it sank into her bones, and gathered her cloak again, shivering just the slightest bit as she held in around her. As the fire warmed her, she became more steady, shaking less. When it finally seemed to have calmed even her voice, she spoke.

"She's absolutely gorgeous...." She murmured of Wren, glancing back to the ethereal doe. "Is she....a guardian? I've seen does...But none like her." There was just something about her she couldn't put her finger on. Was she a guardian? Were there different types? Ah, she had no idea. And yet....The same experience she'd had at the Ward Tree, seeing Idriss, and meeting the other guardians, she felt the inspiration creep back, taking hold of her heart. Yes, there was no way her hands would be idle when she returned home, injured or not.

"She tells me she's a Guardian." Which would, all on its own, set Wren apart -- but Warwick offered it in a flippant way, straightening and halfway turning to look at her. In reply, she huffed out a breath that wasn't quite a word but must have been mocking in return, because it made his smile grow, wilder. He scraped hair back out of his face.

"Ye've got yer own, though, I see." This as his eyes resettled on her, with a quick jerk of his chin toward Aelius. "Still growin' but..."

"Tells you?" Rosalie was smart, and knew exactly what to pick up on. Well yes, the beautiful lady before her was a Guardian. And...She could communicate more clearly. "Through...The bond?" She tapped her head lightly, trying to explain in case he wasn't familiar with the word. Her eyes turned back to Warwick, the rather whimsical looking young man who must be her chosen.

"Yes, his name is Aelius by the way. In case you didn't hear me...ah...using such foul language at him." Oh she had the temper on her, and certainly was aware of what she had said. It didn't seem like he minded too much, thankfully. "Still growing? So....So she used to be the regular size of the does I've met?" This was what really caught her interest. "They....They get bigger? I haven't seen any like yours...The bucks. They get bigger as well?" Oh she was completely focused on Warwick now, eyes full of curiosity, ears ready to catch his words as she leaned forward.

Aelius' ears perked at Wren's huff, looking towards the lady curiously again. He didn't understand...Bigger? Like her? He inched a little closer to his own chosen, and then, as regally as he could, snuffed out his own greeting to the lady.

Wren made a sound, then, at last, that wasn't something a normal deer would. Instead it held the ringing feel of laughter, her head tipped back so that she could look down on the lot of them, and her tail swishing up across her back. But that was it. She didn't speak [she never spoke, in front of strangers], and didn't step in to help Warwick out with the deluge of questions.

He shot her an exasperated look.

"There's some's bigger than her, even. She's pretty short, all things considered." His turn to take a dig at his Guardian, who just peered back at him, eyes glittering a bit. This was his problem.

Warwick paused, and then dropped down easily to sit beside her, gesturing to his pot. "Do you want some rice and beans?"
PostPosted: Fri Mar 22, 2013 12:42 am

Aelius jumped. He was not used to this. This was odd and strange and how in the world did the lovely lady's tail get so long?! He shrunk back closer to his chosen, not so regal after all. What was she?

"Short? Her?" Rosalie looked even more exasperated than Warwick had. There were bigger ones, and just trying to wrap her mind around that fact wasn't easy. "S-So....Will Aelius...?" The look she gave to her own guardian was in pure awe. Aelius was obviously confused as well, meeting his chosen's eyes and very quickly answered with his own feelings to her.

She turned back quickly, laughing slightly nervously at his offer of rice and beans. "Oh no, I'm perfectly--" The smith began, only to be interrupted rather rudely by a noisy gurgle from her complaining stomach. She flushed slightly, biting lightly on the inside of her bottom lip, before sighing. "Yes."

So be it, then: Warwick dropped down beside her, surprisingly graceful, even even as he collapsed into a boneless heap. He grabbed a rough pottery bowl from beside the fire and started shoveling some of his food into her bowl: suitably polite, at least. Maybe he could afford it, right now. One look at him and his Guardian and people were often more generous with their donations --

"...I dunno if they all get so...if they all start...if they're all so chatty." He said it dryly, as he offered her a bowl. A bit of a joke, maybe. Wren was hardly chatty at all. "Only some of'em started talkin', recently. Or so I've heard."
PostPosted: Wed Mar 27, 2013 1:03 pm

The smell was simply amazing. Making note to perhaps one day do this, over her own large fire, she took the bowl graciously, just inhaling the scent, before carefully eating, lest it scald her tongue. It seemed luck wasn't quite on her side, and the searing burn remained for a second before disappearing, though she didn't seem to care.

"Talking?" That was the biggest shock to her. They could talk now. "That's...amazing. Though I do have to wonder what my boy would sound like. He's a terrible goofball most of the time, so I can't imagine having to put a voice to it...." Though to be fair, she had created one for him in her head. Something that would ramble excitedly like a child. At least, that's what is images and emotions would translate to.

His hands wrapped around a serving of beans himself, Warwick flashed her a smile that was more easy-going, comforted by the idea of a goofball of a Guardian. His own, sitting across the fire and watching them, tended to be the more serious of their duo. A good counterpoint, but it gave him a certain idea about how these things went down.

"To be fair, she don't actually talk much." He ate one bite, exactly one, and raised one shoulder in a shrug. "Not sure if that's the rules or just how she is, ye know?"
