I was honestly surprised. Really.
I had watched the original with Stallone and I admit I like it because it's got that delicious 80's cheese we all know and love. So I expected the new one to be more of the same except even cheesier because it's a remake of a movie from the 80's and it seems that when that happens they feel the need to pile it on.
They didn't...I was elated. Two interesting female leads who have no time for a romantic sub plot, just character. Juicy, juicy, character. Anderson, a rookie who has psychic abilities who is just below the bar to become a Judge who is being given one last chance at becoming a Judge with some street work and Ma-ma, a fearsome drug king-pin with a penchant for torture (who was fantastic by the way).
And they did not humanize Dredd. He never takes his helmet off. He never stops being a homicidal justice robot calculating the penalty for crimes. There is no sexual tension between him and Anderson. There's no time for that s**t. They have a duty to uphold.
If you guys haven't seen it, it's worth at least one watch.

It's not that there wasn't a romantic subplot, it's that even if there were Dredd's such a stonefaced badass that nobody would ever know.
"I see her first, I shoot her. She sees me first, she hesitates, I shoot her."

I've watched it twice. Makes me want to raid a condo.

A film produced and recognized in Hollywood the past 15 years without at least 50% drama? I don't believe you!
