i think it is vital that anyone who becomes aware of how the world really works should prepare themselves anyway they can...we,ve covered survival tactics, kit, staying healthy and so on....but i think its now time to talk about hideaways and places of retreat... a place to fall back on once all goes to hell....this has only occured to me in the past week or so and i think that its time i put it up here...a santuary or whatever is basically somewhere you can go to be safe, practise chemistry [if its a big place like an old farmhouse],meditation, or whatever or it can simply be a place to get away from it all and stay sane... it can even be made into a place of religious worship...[in turkey centuries ago persecuted christians inhabited caves]

it can be a cave, grove, barn, shed, abandoned hospital whatever.... so long as it is some distance away from civilization [or at least hidden to civilization]...and the must haves to supply the retreat are water, first aid kit, plenty of firewood and maybe some tins of food...

so please lets discuss...ive only given a breif overveiw of this very encompassing subject.

My retreat would be the forests of Appalachia. I grew up roaming them and I'm confident I could survive undetected there indefinitely.

ok but what about in terms of buildings, caves, tunnels and so on? like you mentioned before: one of your favourite pieces of kit is your folding shovel so would it be a good idea to copy the viet cong? but i suppose tunnels are a bit too vulnerable [flamethrowers, dogs, gas etc..] so then what are the best structures to go for if you are in a town or city? i think that if your near a river its a good idea to have a little boat/raft tied up somewhere in some little inconspicious corner so that whilst everyone else is trying to escape by road/on foot etc.... you can go by the river.

Digging tunnels like the VC is way too big of a job for one person with a folding shovel. I just don't see it as being practical under any circumstances.

I think the best structure depends on the particular threat. There is no one structure that's going to be superior in all situations.

I think that in a situation where the roads are blocked that the rivers would be virtually impassable as well due to everyone having the same idea as you. I live near the Mississippi now and there's no way I'm going to attempt a Tom Sawyer on that river. Consider how exposed you would be as well.

There's no one best way that's a silver bullet for all circumstances. Every situation is unique and requires an adaptive approach. All we can do is make the best general preparations we can. Purchasing and stockpiling a lot of special equipment may seem like a good idea but even then there is no possible way to prepare for every potential disaster.

I think there's no safe building at all.If you go into an abandoned building, let's say,an hospital,(Here in Puerto Rico,Humacao has an abandoned hospital and when you drive besides it,you can see homeless people looking through the windows.)you could be safe for a while, until it get's someone's attention. The only way for you to survive is by exploring all the rooms of the building, memorizing them so when a group of armed men come you hide in one of the safest rooms until they walk past the door. But if you are in a group of people large enough to fight and surprise them with traps do it.The same goes with guns.Hide, wait and fire when you thinks it's your chance. If not,you and your family(friends) will be dead in no time. Here in El Yunque it is easy to get lost in and not safe. For people have seen creatures living there.Just as the Garadiablo.A being with wings, and gills wich lives underwater in our lakes. (Getting off topic here.Creating another topic to talk about it if you're interested!)But ya,there's no safe building.Atleast it could be for a while.

ok so how about caves and ancient underground sites? and how about an abandoned house like this one: would these be good places to hide out?
