Because Esmeralda had chosen the Peisio as her clan, naturally she would be inclined to study them first. With her permission granted, she’d set out on a trek to find one and simply watch. It was a nice change from her usual seeks and destroys suicide missions she usually went on, but she felt so much better now that all she did was observe from afar. Her profession master had left her with some books, things to write and some strict rules to follow while she was out there, all of which had been neatly packed with some provisions for later on that day if she got hungry and such.

Serenia was her location of choice, not only for it’s beautiful surroundings but also because its lakes were quite visible, and maybe because Esmeralda was afraid to go anywhere else by herself. For her first assignments, she really wanted to push herself a tad bit more, so she chose a lake that while was still close to civilisations, she was more likely to find a dragon there. As it just so happened, Esme ran into a Peisio dragon on her way to the lake. It was casually gliding above her, and thankfully hadn’t seen her yet, so she decided to follow it.

Curiosity truly got the better of her; she followed the dragon for quite a while, only briefly pausing to mark down her observations as she went. There was something so calming about the whole follow, watch and mark down that Esmeralda was really enjoying. Somehow, she felt like she could change the whole world just doing this daily, this was why she wanted to get better at this scholar thing. Maybe what she was writing down now was setting a bright path for her in the future… A Dovaa could dream right?

The Peisio finally stopped at another lake, much larger than the one Esmerlada had previously scoped out, and she knew why. There were at least three more dragons from what she could observe; some were in the water playing while others were on the side of the lake enjoying the sun. Esme climbed up a tree and settled herself in with her back to the tree and legs on either side of the large branch she’d settled down on. From here she could observe and to disturb, a smile appeared on her lips, the first one ever in the presence of dragons.

Observation was key, to learn an enemies' weakness and how best to exploit it you first had to understand them. That was what Akilae had been taught and was what he was doing now. He was not supposed to fight except to defend himself, right now his goal was only to observe the Orderites and report back on their behavior. It was boring work for his first assignment off of Soudul though it was good nevertheless to be outside of the compound and on the road to advancement in the ranks.

He paused for a moment to consult the map his father had given him, there should be a small lake not to far ahead of him and beyond that a road that would lead to one of the smaller cities on Serenia. Though he could not get see the water past the thick grove of trees he was currently in Akilae could hear someone or something splashing about in it. Assured that he had not gotten lost, the hybrid boy folded his map back up and tucked it between his forearm and left bracer.

He would have to proceed carefully now, not wanting to get too close to the lake until he knew just what was enjoying it. Careful not to step on any fallen branches Akilae continued to pick his way towards where the trees were thinning out.

An upward glance to check for predatory birds and mammals that might give his presence away revealed an interesting surprise. Someone was resting in a tree just a little ahead of him. He couldn't make anything out about them from the single leg he could see though. Akilae cleared his throat softly, wanting to get the other's attention as he approached. The last thing he wanted was to be attacked for sneaking up on someone.

Still he was mindful of their possible aggression anyways and kept much of his body shielded behind tree trunks.

The sudden cough jerked Esmeralda from her writings and she jumped in surprise almost losing her books to the ground. Unfortunately, she did lose her writing quill and watched it gently float to the ground. Darn it, she was going to have to climb down and get it now. Esme looked around until she spotted the one who had caused her to almost fall off the tree; she shielded her eyes from the sun to get a better look at him. It was a little hard to find him, her eyes had actually passed over him once thinking he was the shadow of a tree, but they found him once more.

Esmeralda leaned slightly over her branch. “Hey, you scared me.” She said with an accusatory voice, why was he hiding behind the tree anyways? “Are you here to look at the dragons too?” Another scholar had found his way over here? Oh well, it would be nice to have some company now, and maybe they could share notes! She hadn’t really thought of bringing someone along, but this could get fun. “Come on up, I have a great view of the Peisio dragons from here.” She hadn’t even bothered to think of where he might have come from, or if he was even an enemy. As always, she simply assumed the best from everyone.

Akilae had watched with amusement as a small dovaa girl was revealed to be who was waiting in the tree. Her eyes indicated that she was a Peisio, dovaa were already lesser beings but Akilae had no special interest or care for those outside of the Ysali clan. If a fight occurred he, being clanless, would be disadvantaged but he would feel no gui-

Oh! It seemed she was harmless after all and that the noise from the lake was dragons and not more people. Akilae was nowhere near ready to face those dragons yet but observing them as well as the dovaa girl would be a decent use of his time. He flashed the peisio dovaa a smile and nodded " Yes, I'll be right there."

Akilae broke from cover and walked towards the tree where the strange girl resided, still not dropping his guard just in case she tried something sneaky. When it appeared that no attacks were forthcoming he bent down to pick up the quill that had floated to the ground when he'd distracted it's owner. He tucked the writing implement behind an ear and began to scale the tree. It's bark felt a little different than that from the ones on Soudul but the mechanics of climbing were the same.

In no time he was perched on a branch near the Peisio girl, arm extended out to offer her quill back to her. For now he would play nice and see just how much she accepted him and how quickly she might be lured into trusting him.

Nodding, Esmeralda moved away from the trunk to give him some room to climb up to reach her. What a strange one he was, but really he couldn’t be blamed, now that she got a good look at him the answer resided in his eyes. He was a banished; Esme suspected Dovaa by his horns and purple eyes noting he was clanless and his dark skin. To her, he was fascinating, something strange she’d never seen before. Maybe she could get him talking at some point about himself, she was an information sponge and he was not your ordinary Dovaa.

She was just about to ask him if he needed help climbing up, but he seemed to be doing well on his own. Esmeralda took the quill from him and offered him a large smile. “Thank you, I didn’t really want to go down and get it myself. Getting up this tree was hard enough as it was.” Except he hadn’t even broken out a sweat getting up here, she guessed he must be a fighter of sorts to be able to pull off such a thing. In any case, she was just content with having some to chit chat with while she observed the dragons.

“So…” She said slowly, opening up her books once more and glancing at him briefly while observing the dragons and marking down her writings. “What brings you in these parts?” she doubted he could take on that many dragons by himself, especially If he was clanless, that would just be crazy. However, if he was working for the Oblivionites, she assumed he was spying. She could be wrong, Esmeralda was going to give him the benefit of the doubt of course, but if he was out here to spy, she would leave him be.

A good lie is the truth simply stretched out a little. The more things you had to make up to make a lie work, the less natural it would sound and the more likely you were to be caught. This, along with paying attention to breathing rates and body language, which he still struggled with, was something all children of the order were taught. If they were to survive in the war torn continents of Magesc then they would need to learn early how to lie well. Akilae took no particular pleasure in deceiving others but he had a purpose in life and to fulfill it would require many lies to be told over many years.

"There are plants that only grow around here that my mother wants," Akilae explained as he tucked a lock of blue hair that had slipped loose while climbing behind his ear. "I don't understand why exactly plants will only grow on certain continents. I know some plants need more sun or more water but isn't all dirt just dirt?"

Akilae would start learning this sort of thing and the properties and uses of many plants soon. His mother had determined he was not yet ready to became a Ysali dovaa but that there were practical lessons to be learned now that would help him on his path. So while he had another reason to be in the area Akilae had been asked to find and bring back bits of certain plants if he came across them.

All Esmeralda could do really was simply nod, she had no knowledge on plants with the exception of ‘this looks like a tree, and that’s a bush.’ She studied dragons, plants were the least of her concern, but hey everyone had their own thing. “Are you a herbalist or healer maybe? Well, I mean is your mother.” Perhaps he was studying under his mother’s care; it made her wonder as to where he lived since he was a Hybrid. The little she knew about Hybrids was that they didn’t exactly get the warmest welcome within the community; she wondered if maybe he’d been raised outside of a Dovaa or Oblivionite city.

“I think it’s like dragons, they needed different climates or food, or whatever so they grow only where this is possible. Maybe this plant you are searching for isn’t very robust, and so it won’t survive in the desert.” All this from simply studying dragons, it amused her how much she was learning about the world. Esmeralda didn’t consider herself the brightest one around, but she certainly was growing out to be that way. “I’m Esmeralda, what’s your name?” Esme stuck her hand out to greet him, she may as well get to k now her companion.

Akilae leaned forward slightly and reached out to accept the offered handshake. Grasping Esmeralda's hand he squeezed it firmly though not hard enough to hurt. "I'm Tyrok, most people call me Ty." Tyrok was the name he was to use outside of Soudul, except with special contacts. It was a necessary form of deception and while Tyrok wasn't quite as nice as his true name it was an acceptable alias. He at least was only required to remember and use one alias and was generally allowed to be himself under it. Onyx eyes who acted as spies had to memorize several and each had it's own personality attached. Akilae respected those who followed that path, he didn't think he could pretend to be so many different people, having to regularly switch who he was based on what contact he might be around at the time.

" My mother is a herbalist, she does some healing but mostly she makes all sorts of things from the plants she grows or collects." Being a Ysali dovaa she could also use quite a bit of magic but his mother's clan choice seemed to have spawned from a true affinity for plants and they were her passion. Akilae didn't mind plants and he had a few he found attractive in his room but he doubted he would ever love them like she did.

"Why don't I bother you?" Akilae's tone was filled with genuine curiosity. Outside of the order hybrid's like himself were generally mistreated and looked down upon. Why was Esmeralda okay with him?

“Nice to meet you Tyrok.” Interesting name with a firm handshake, hers was probably weak. Esme truly didn`t know the difference, why would you squeeze someone’s hand so hard anyway? Maybe it was a warrior thing; her father always had a firm one that she knew of because people always commented on it. Her mother had once mentioned something about telling someone`s personality by their handshake.

“Ah I wish my parents had been healers, I wouldn`t have felt so bad becoming a scholar. My dad owns a forge and my mom fights, I'm surprised they still talk to me. Fighting’s a big thing in our family.” And she was the first to not follow in her heritage footsteps carved by her previous family members. There was also the fact that she wasn`t going to be taking up the family business, and because she`d been the only child it was sort of a dream crusher for them. Lovely, Ty was probably doing more for his family than she was for her own.

His question dragged her attention to him sharply, but then again it wasn`t one she hadn`t answered before, and now it didn`t bother her anymore. Sure some people thought it was cool that she studied dragons, but no one really took her seriously. Esmeralda closed her book and regarded him quietly for a few seconds, debating telling him everything or giving the shortened, simple answer she was used to giving others. “Do you see these scales and horns on me? I`m a Dovaa, and that makes me part dragon. Yet, thousands and thousands of us have killed dragons for years. When I started out as a fighter I wanted to be a healer to save people, but I was constantly asking myself `Why do we kill dragons when they are so close to us?` I became a scholar to study dragons because I want to change things. Silly for me to think I can change stuff, but that`s what I think.”

Taking a deep breath, Esmeralda smiled like a weight had been lifted, but others judged her so often that she had closed off about the subject as a whole. “Anyway, you’re part Dovaa too and I feel the same applies to you. I see your purple eyes, scales and green horns and that’s enough for me.” He was maybe just a little darker in coloration, but that was beside the point. “I don’t think it would be the same if you weren`t half Dovaa.” No definitely not the same if there had been no Dovaa blood flowing in his veins, granted his dark appearance did freak her out.

Ahh, so she still held the normal bias most of Magesc did but his mother's blood was enough to make him acceptable in her eyes. Akilae supposed he understood that, he had his own strong bias based on one's blood. Although he didn't have any particularly strong feelings about hybrids. The Order had no others at the moment and so he'd never had a chance to meet any given that he had rarely been permitted to leave the compound. He might favour those who had Oblivionite blood but in general Akilae felt like hybrids were their own sort of category of people that he didn't know enough about to really judge.

"I don't think studying dragons is silly, but I don't think it would stop the hunting either." Akilae fidgeted as he spoke, picking at a nail he had chipped earlier, trying to get the tip even looking again. "Dragons attack people even when we don't start the fight and they fight drakein as well who can be as smart as people. They aren't interested in sharing the continents with us. Plus, as long as their souls can be used as weapons people will hunt them for more than just self defense." There was never going to be peace with the dragons, it just wasn't possible.

"I think it's good to want to understand them better but I don't think there is a way to reason with them." Only dovaa could speak with dragons anyways and Akilae didn't think the dovaa would be asking dragons to leave their enemies alone if they could get them to negotiate.

“I know.” Esmeralda said quietly offering him a weak smile, opening up her book as she started marking things down again. Her eyes left him to look at the dragons who seemed to now be all on the sandy beach simply relaxing. She knew and understood what he was saying to her, it was the argument everyone gave her when she shared her dream with them. At least though, he didn’t think her studies were silly so in her book he was an okay person. “One can dream right?” She glanced back at him, this time offering him a genuine smile and chuckle.

But she tired of the subject being on herself, she wanted to know more about him. After all, it wasn’t every day that you met a Hybrid and there was always this shroud of mystery that surrounded them. “What about you? What would you like to do? Have you picked a clan you’d like to join?” If she had to take a wild guess, she assumed he might want to go with Diabi simply because of his Oblivionite side, but she could be wrong. She wondered where he lived, and if he lived with both his parents or just his mother.

"Hmm? Oh well I'd kind of like to be able to study music more someday." Akilae admitted, as his gaze shifted between Esmeralda and the peisio dragons that lounged in the distance. He wondered if the powerful beasts could hear them and simply didn't see their presence as as threat. No one had, to the best of his knowledge, ever figured out just what the hearing range of a dragon was. He supposed that sort of thing was something someone like Esmeralda could discover. Of course then it would just be used against the dragons which she probably wouldn't like. He'd learned that during his lessons, no matter your intentions for it someone will always use new knowledge for their own ends. His mother had confirmed such a thing, pointing out that plants once used for numbing the body during surgery were now used in interrogations to cause prisoners discomfort.

"When I'm ready I will be a Ysali like my mother." It was a choice that had been made for Akilae before he'd even been born. He didn't really mind though, he'd seen the strength of Ysali dovaa both on and off the battlefield. Besides that he had a unique role to fill and that required him to take his mother's clan. Akilae would not disappoint his family or the Order, he would follow the plans his parents had set forth for him.

‟Well, I`ll be looking for your name when you become all famous and such.″ Esme teased lightly, granted she didn`t think a Hybrid would be able to get famous. He didn`t need to know that though, he didn`t need someone crushing his dreams. Society was such an odd thing, it restrained people and yet no one seemed to notice what it was doing to them. Esmeralda briefly wondered if there wasn`t a place out there where all the Hyrbids lived together freely, what would happen if say a Dovaa was to walk into this village. Would it be rude to ask him if such a thing existed?

‟That`s a good choice.″ Esme nodded once, was it his choice or did Hybrids take after their Dovaa parent? ‟Ysali was one of my choices since a lot of healers are also from that clan, but I went with Peisio.″ She liked water a lot, people required water to survive. Back then when she was still making her choice, she`d wanted to be useful to everyone which was what had made her pick Peisio. It felt like forever ago now, she missed the practices with Erisi.

‟Can I ask you something personal?″ He could always say no, but Esmeralda was going to throw herself out there. ‟How is it really being a Hybrid? Is it really like people say?″ People said they were rejects from society, lived on the outskirts of town and that no one should approach them. For once, she was given the opportunity to ask the other side of the coin and she genially did want to know what it felt like.

Akilae had to smile at the dovaa girl's first comment. Perhaps someday when the war was won he would retire and become a famous musician. After all he would already be renowned for his role in the war, or so his father had assured him. Although Akilae had a feeling he would need to learn a new instrument to become famous. The harmonica, while portable and capable of a wide range of sounds was not exactly thought of as an inspiring instrument or the sort one held a concert with. Or at least from what Akilae knew it wasn't as respected as some other instruments.

The question about hybrids made the boy frown and shift about uncomfortably. "I don't.. I don't want to talk about it right now." He had heard rumors of how hybrids were treated and he'd gotten the odd nasty look in some cities in Souldul but he didn't have enough experience to feel comfortable lying about that sort of thing. Akilae knew he'd experienced a different life than what most hybrids reportedly did. The only thing he could really discuss was "Um but it's weird to kind of have eyes but not really." He had large mostly empty eye sockets , yet in their centers were small flares of violet light that allowed him to see the world in a different way then his oblivionite kin.

Esmeralda wanted to smack herself for being so rude, her hand extended towards his shoulder for comfort but she retracted it quickly. Ty was not her friend, he was a Hybrid and she had to remind herself of that. “I’m sorry for asking.” She really was sorry, she wasn’t exactly sure as to what was off limits of asking so she decided from now on she was going to wait for him to start any subjects related to being a Hyrbid. Esme didn’t want him leaving; she liked the company so her questions were going to have to be placed out of her mind for now.

Leaning in slightly, Esmeralda stared at his eyes. “Oh yea, that’s really cool. Do you see like any Oblivionite? Do you see color?” Now that was really cool, she knew her eyes had turned a turquoise since she’d picked Peisio, but that was nothing out of the ordinary for a Dovaa. “I wonder if you’d end up with completely black eyes if you went with Diabi for your clan.” She couldn’t really picture him any darker than he already was, but at least going Ysali was going to give him some green in there somewhere.
