User Image Yona was unimpressed with the warren on the hill. His marli had told him grand stories when he was a kitten, but they couldn't be further from what he had witnessed the day before. These rabbits were starving and worse yet, their leaders didn't command respect. If the invaders decided to take over this warren, then they would have an easy time of it. But why bother? All they needed were does to replace the ones that died during the fighting.

He crept near the border of the warren, freezing at the slightest sound and ears swiveling every which way. He never though he'd say it, but he missed the comforting presence of the other 'hlessi.' On his own, he was at the mercy of elil and aggressive owsla officers. The chief had asked them to stay away; the sooner he found a rabbit to lure away, the better.

User ImageFennel was so hungry. He felt like his stomach was going to eat his entire body and then where would he be? A dead mess, that was what. He hated this. He almost kind of wished the Black Rabbit would just come and get it over with - take him like he had taken the kittens who were too weak and hungry to make it out of this season alive.

His dear ol' ma wouldn't put up with his whining because "he's an adult, now" and sent him packing when he tried to hang around her burrow. Bah - he was only just an adult. He knew plenty of rabbits who hung around at this - okay, no he didn't, but he just wasn't ready. He had only just left the burrow and all of this terrible starvation became a thing. He was miserable. The golden furred buck, who was quite an even blend of his mother and father, was almost skin and bones. He moved slowly across the down's surface, looking for anything that might be tasty or nutritional or both, he really just wanted to fill his belly. He had half a mind to take off towards the woods, but he'd probably just get himself killed that way.

Grouchily, he kicked some snow.

Heart pounding, Yona went tharn as he spotted another rabbit. The rabbit was headed his direction, what if what if.

But no, that skinny thing couldn't possibly be an owsla. Yona was in better shape. The brown buck wasn't a doe either, but Yona wasn't about to stick around until a doe showed up. A malnourished buck would have to do for now.

Still cautious, Yona took a couple hops towards the buck. "Hoi!" he called. "Does winter always strike so heavy a blow to your warren?"

If Yona hadn't have asked him such an unusual question, one that obviously pinned him as a stranger, Fennel might have mistaken him for one of his warren-mates at first. He was a young, inexperienced buck, after all, and he hardly knew most of the members in the warren. His reaction was to tell the silver buck that his ma told him not to talk to strangers - but he was an adult! He couldn't very well spit something like that out and expect to be taken seriously, still he was a bit cautious all the same. His miniature tantrum was forgotten and he left the snow drifts alone for the time being as he turned his cobalt eyes to Yona.

"I dunno - I mean I don't think so. This is my first one and if it's always like this, I hope it's my last. The Black Rabbit could come and take me away right now, for all I care." Even if he was an adult, he certainly sounded like a kitten complaining about life not being fair.

"Why are you here, anyway? There ain't no room for hlessi to be moving in."

So this buck was young. Excellent news! His inexperience would make him that much easier to fool. Yona thought quickly, not wanting to reveal the truth to this buck when he still didn't know if he was willing to leave his home warren. Not the full truth, at least. For now he'd stick to Lark's story as well as he could.

"My old warren never had this much trouble," he said with a sad shake of his head. "Not even during winter... but it's gone now."

"I have no intention of staying here," he said honestly enough. "My companions and I have traveled far and we only want to rest a while. We're headed for a warren we've heard whispers of, with empty burrows and fresh flay-rah. Lark said he's been there once before," he added, assuming a misty eyed expression.

Though he tried to act as though he weren't that interested, he did a rather poor job. His ears swiveled forward and he inched nearer to the strange, silver buck. The sound of a warren that was not hurting for flay or burrows sounded too good to be true, especially during this miserable winter - what with the lack of flay and severe overcrowding. He wanted out, certainly, but rabbit underground, rabbit safe and sound. The mere idea of wandering as a hlessi made the cream furred buck anxious.

"What happened to it? Your old warren, I mean?" His other question he didn't voice. How far away was this flay-filled warren? His stomach gurgled at the mere thought of having something to eat.

He had him. Flay was a powerful temptation, it seemed. Which wasn't surprising, given the buck's condition. He'd flesh out well in the new warren though, should Yona manage to sway him. He considered his next words carefully. Sticking close to the truth made it easier for him to keep his tale straight, but it would hardly do to say that his old warren had been taken over and his warren mates killed. Lark had mentioned a dead warren though...

He let his ears sink, feigning a sadness he didn't feel. "All killed or nearly so," he said. "We were well located, good flay... but man came hunting and few escaped. I fear that my companions and I are the only ones who survived..."

He shook himself. "But that is the past and dwelling on it does no good. Lark knows of another warren, safe from man. Near a river, he said, so there's good water close nearby. He visited it once... it's a small warren, looking to grow its numbers. Too many empty burrows."

The gray buck's story was a sad one and Fennel's ears drooped as he thought of a similar fate happening to his warren - to his mother and many, many, many, many half siblings. Such a thing would be absolutely terrible... Then again, them all starving to death wasn't any better than getting killed by man, it just took longer.

He was about to ask the buck how in Frith's name he'd know such a place existed, but the other answered before he could spit out the question. Lark, then? He took it as that buck being one of the other hlessi that were lurking out in the woodlands. He considered this for a moment, lips turned downward in a firm frown, ears flattening along his back as he weighed his options. All he really had to go on was this buck's word, but why would he lie? What did he stand to gain? And Fennel was so hungry.

"Can... Can I come with you guys?"

Aurrie Beaues

Watching the buck make up his mind was stressful, but it was clear enough he had him and all he had to do now was not loose him. "Six is safer than five while we travel. There are too many rabbits for the land to support here, so by all means - come with us! The other warren is small, I'm certain they'll be glad to see us. I'll bring you to Lark. My name is Yona," he added as he hopped towards the woods.

"Yona, I am Fennel. Thank you for letting me come with you, friend. Lead the way and I will follow."

The young buck's heart thudded in his chest and a wave of excitement washed over him as he looked over the dapple gray buck he was now entrusting his life and future to. Oddly enough, he had little qualms about it. He'd never see his brothers and sisters again. Or his mother. Or his father - but that buck really hardly had anything to do with them and had a thousand youngin's running around at this point.

Fennel was excited, not afraid, and was glad to leave this crummy old warren. It was overcrowded, there wasn't enough space to live, let alone enough food to eat. He found it stifling to the point that breathing felt difficult much of the time.

Yona smiled, delighted. "It will good to have you with us, friend," he said. The word "friend" felt foreign, but if Fennel was willing to use such a word, then Yona would encourage him to do so. It would be good to have allies in the taken-over warren, even if they were as out of place as him.
