-̨̀-̶̧͜-̕-̕-͜͠-̸͢͢-̧͘͟-̷̛̀-̀

It was easy to forget them if he really focused. And for a while, that had been pretty easy. Bells had officially told him of her love, spirit week barreled through with odd Christmas shenanigans, Red's class had filled his mind with more questions to ponder, and then the whole Crowns' corruption had swept everything off the table for quite a while. Always one thing after another to keep him busy.

-͟-͠--҉-̕͠-̀͘-҉̶--̸

And always with them in the background, unwanted passengers that rode every train of thought he dared take. Mort had played it off as best he could around his friends (if he even talked about it at all), but the signs were still damning: he found himself beginning to grow more on edge, more twitchy, regard things with more suspicion than warranted. Foolishly he had hoped that somehow, by sheer force of work and will, he could banish them. And why couldn't he? He'd survived days outside the realm of Halloween, been swallowed by the fog more times than he liked, been falsely weaponized twice, and died countless times as students of Amityville were inclined to do. Beyond that, he was just beginning to perfect Thor, just beginning to get a job to help fend for himself while his mother cut him off thanks to his "antics", just beginning to live a life where he had friends, and a zombro, and projects ready to be given life, and graduation that was halfway there, and a ghoulfriend who loved him. He was a zombie who was just beginning to live.

-̴͝-́́̕-̧-̴͡-̛͠-̶͞-͞-͠-͏-̴͟-̢́--̷--

Whispers couldn't stand up to that. Whispers shouldn't. They were just faceless murmurs of something that couldn't take full control, he told himself sometimes. Just another form of a scar that lingered as a reminder.

--̸͡-̷̢-̧-͝-͢-̷-̛̕͟-̀-̨͢-̛-̵̕͝--̀-̨--̛͟-̷̛͘--͜-̨͢-҉̛͢-̨͡

He could over come them. Heroes could overcome anything.

-͞-̕---́́-҉̛-̧̧-̷̨͢-͡-̵̨-̷̵-͝-̴̛͟-́-̨͞-̷͡-́-̨͢͠--҉͘͞-̀͘̕-̶҉-̛͟-̨-̢--́͜--

Anything. He could overcome -

-̛͢͝-͝-̵̧-̨-̡̡̢-̸-̕͡-͜͠--͘͡--̕-̴-̀-̨͘-͟-̸͜-̢-̕͞͡-҉--҉-̷͘-̴͘͡-͏͢-͡-͘͠-̢---͏̧--҉̨-̀͟-͠-͢

- So why did something so small still make him feel like he lost? Why did they make him doubt?

It didn't normally get so bad but today, of all ordinary days, the whispers felt as though they were making a conscious effort to force themselves upon him. Maybe it was just raw nerves in his brain firing off. Either way, the zomboil had a headache and an itch to scratch. Something. Anything. He didn't want Belladonna worrying, and if Alex caught wind he'd probably just get more bent about how it was still his fault for convincing Mort to give his crystal to Red in the first place. But he needed to talk to someone. Who better than the werewolf herself? Even if she didn't give him a straight answer, unloading his frustration might at least give him some degree of relief.

Unsure of Red's habits, Mort went the safe route and headed to look for her in the gym, rubbing his temple to nurse the headache and humming to himself in hopes of drowning the whispers out. Terribly distracting, those things.

Aside from the music room, the gym was the next nosiest place on campus. While the noise that blared within the music room had direction and control, the gym itself was pure chaos. There was a dull thunder as students ran across the gym floor, casketballs thudding as they bounced both in and out of control within their hands.

There were currently four teams on the court, each with ribbons tied around their arms to mark off who belonged to who. Red watched them with close eyes, her attention rapidly switching between student and student. With a short shrill PHWEEET! a call was made, a large talon pointed towards a foul player followed by a jerk over her shoulder to indicate they were out.

"Foul! Earth team gets the ball. Wind, you're out a player. Water team I'm not talking to you get back in the game! Fire team's leading over you six to one! Wind, foul ball Earth shoots! Move it, ladies!" Red bellowed, watching as the teams scrambled to follow her orders. The teacher sighed on content, a small grin tugging on her lips.

She drew still, turning to glance towards the gym door. Her jaw tightened as she strode over to it, unlocking the door and opening it for Mort before he reached it. "Can I help you? The gym is currently occupied, if you're looking to spar against someone please use the outdoor arena."

First he heard the noises as he approached. Then the door opened and out was Red, plain as day. Um. Ummmmmm.

It was sad when normalcy could throw him off for a few seconds like that.

"Hullo, professor," Mort greeted after a moment, his hands clasped before him idly. "Was, er, hoping t'talk t'you 'bout somethin', but s-sounds like is busy . . ." He could hear the casketballs bouncing dully from within the gym. "Heard shouting. Needing help?" He wasn't super into sports himself, but he'd been raised to at least offer up help anyway.

She gave him a long, puzzled stare. "It's just gym class," she said slowly, slipping through the door and closing it behind her. "However, I have an... inkling about what you wish to discuss." She beckoned him to follow her as she lead the way away from the gym, stopping short and giving a quick irritated sigh. "Damn office is still frozen shut, and my old one is the new Other Lockerroom. Do you wish to discuss this privately, or risk the chance of someone overhearing?"

Mildly surprised she didn't mind being pulled away, Mort offered a half-smile as Red shut the door behind her and led him away. "Yeah, er, few things." Wait her office was still frozen? That trap of hers had been pretty potent then . . .

Even the mere mention of someone else overhearing caused the zomboil to glance about, his shoulder hunching just a bit. "Private. Er, please," he added in a hushed tone, for though Insanity was hardly a secret to Amityville students, he bristled at the idea of discussing it in the open - especially when he was sure any day now he'd start showing the signs. "Dunno where could go t'be sure would be, though. M-Maybe forbidden forest?"

"Potent" was one word for it. The fact that it wasn't a trap was the kicker. But that was another topic for another day when Red would be more talkative.

As it stood, the werewolf nodded to the boil's request, then shook her head at the suggestion. "Students aren't supposed to go in there, even with a teacher. Besides, I have... elsewhere in mind." Red reached out, her hand shifting and changing. The talons grew longer, sharper as they seemed to shift with dark matter. With the flick of her wrist, Red seemed to slice the air open revealing a swirling gray portal.

The teacher released the breath she held, moving until she was half in and half out of it. "Are you coming?"

If Mort follows, it's a portal to the Haunted House. Feel free to choose the room setting. Mort can also refuse and suggest another location~

There was a lot of gaping involved during the process: one because whoa. He'd witnessed Red's strange powers during his last trip into the Haunted House and its foggy aethers, even though he hadn't been privy to her final attack on the Hunters. Two because if she still had said powers, that meant . . . wait, what did that mean? More questions of course. And third because Haunted House.

Mort's initial reaction was nope at the gray yawning before him. He had done everything he could to minimize the chance of getting sucked in ever since he came back, and his luck thus far had been alright - artifact portal checking not included. Even months after the fact, the very image of the aged wooden walls made him stiffen in recoil. But what was more important, his fears of the house or his fears of being overheard? Paranoia won the debate against regular misgivings in a quashing defeat - what more could the Haunted House do to him anyway? - and with a hard swallow and a nod, he followed after Red into the portal.

The boudoir room itself had a sort of beauty in its decay that befitted Halloween. Limp cobwebbed corners between hardwood walls that clung lifelessly to small fixtures light could have been housed in once; protective sheets over several aged sofa chairs from what appeared to be an earlier era; an empty curio cabinet that stood off to the side, dust giving the glass layers a semi-opaque look; and a muddy red (Red? Brown? Color seemed to be sapped here) carpet that looked as though it had a swirling pattern but that had enough of a moldy, dusted look to hide most of it. The sort of place Mort wouldn't have minded if it weren't for the locale. He scanned the room with his fists jammed in his coat pockets, hating how the chill in the air made him shiver and, more than that, hating that it made him remember.

"D'you know much 'bout this place?" the zomboil asked as a sort of preamble. "How long has been here, where here is? Know is strange hub Hunters can go in, n' Insanity fog was here lots . . ." But otherwise his knowledge was woefully short-sighted.

With a soft click, the portal manifested behind them in the shape of a closed door. Dust rose from Red's steps as she crossed the room, experimentally kicking a couch to ensure that it didn't have any tiny inhabitants in it. She reached out and pulled the cover off of it, letting it pool on the floor before she dropped onto the couch. Another moment was spent shuffling on it as she wiggled into a comfortable position.

"I know a bit," Red answered. "The Haunted House has been here a long time. It's one of the most established connections between Halloween and the Human World. The Boogeymen utilize this place as a training ground, though it's owned by... a friend of mine. You might get to meet him sometime in the future, though he likes his privacy."

Red stretched on the couch. "Otherwise... You could th-blame me for the Insanity. I wasn't counting on dying, or having... this happen." She sat up straight. "There was something you wished to talk to me about privately, yes?"

He visibly perked at the idea of meeting this mysterious friend, if only because any training from Red or her connections, boogeymen or not, was welcomed. Anything at all to take his mind off the stressful stuff and back into future goals that should still matter to him. "Wouldn't mind meeting any've 'em, if t'least f-for autographs . . ." It was a weak joke that died quickly in the fog. But to business. He swiveled a pocketed fist idly as he thought of how best to phrase himself, knowing all too much how his quirky manner of speech could lead to pitfalls from missing words.

"Mrr . . . Yeah, wanted t'talk; thanks for taking time, b-by the way. Will admit, lot've stuff 'round Insanity n' you was a bit lost on. Was in first week've school when was on team here, n' when you, er . . . turned." That seemed like the most polite way to put it. "N' now is back with powers like portal making, n' beast turning, n' think heard your voice back with dragon wrangling, so . . . So, ah, b-best place t'start would be there, at beginning, m'thinking," he said, shifting weight to his other foot, wishing he wasn't so nervous about having all these questions.

"Guess best first question is, how'd you turn into blue fire beast in first place? I-If don't mind me asking. N' why'd turn t'stone aferwards?"

Marushii
Only if you pardon mine back! OTL Oh school~

Turned. That was a way to put it. A large grin crossed her face. Ah, if only they knew how deep that particular rabbit hole went.

"Tell me first," Red began as she sat up straight to give Mort her full attention. "What do you know of Hunters?"

That was more blunt than he was used to. Jack damn, when did he get so wordy again? Apparently as a King . . .

"Mrrr . . . Know are more complex than seemed at first now," Mort began. "Some don't care t'know 'bout us, just destroy. Others're more concerned 'bout horsemen, but m'not sure why?" He passed Red a curious look in case she felt like elaborating. "Have theory, but m'not sure if is any good. A-Anyway, don't think they're all bad. Had to work with couple've 'em during, er, last visit down here with all that . . . stuff . . ." Still not a time he was thoroughly done working out his emotions on. "One've 'em long while back said something 'bout having lot've humans or hunters murdered by one've us, which d-doesn't make sense . . . Is taught not to kill 'cause who'll make Fear if keep taking lives?

"So, er, long story short: hypothesis is Hunters're there to fight rogue factions've Halloween. Some've 'em just have, ah, broader definition've what 'enemy' is, which causes . . . problems."

He paused, then made a face. "Not t'mention Halloween weapon partners. Always thought were forced into slaves, but . . ." The face turned more sour as he remembered Herryk. "But know now can have volunteers," he added in an almost undertone.

His curious look was met with a shrug, followed by a twirling hand to indicate he should continue speaking. It wasn't until he was finished that she leaned back. Red kept her arms crossed as she studied the student in silence.

"Not all from Halloween follow the laws, nor do all Hunters. It takes only a certain few to push the limit, to cross the line and break the fragile truce. When hurt, one lines to lash out at what they think hurt them rather than find the truth. It is the same for us as it is for them," Red explained carefully. "Whether these are truths or not is up to you, and what you believe is the heart of the matter."

"As for myself..." She trailed off, her gaze becoming unfocused. "I lived among them for a time, bonded to a weapon. We became partners, he and I. When the time came to strike back to prove ourselves, the weapon betrayed me."

The professor stood up and stretched, adding, "The result is what you see before you after being betrayed by those who swore fealty and killed by those she swore to protect. I don't recall how many agonizing moons it took to rebuild ourselves."

"But the more pressing question is," she continued, fixing Mort with a stare. "What do you seek to gain?"

He fought the impulse to wiggle under the professor's silent gaze, fists growing tighter from the anxiety of somehow being wrong or ridiculed. Swiss cheese trust and predilection to take control, that's all it was. Otherwise it was all just mindless retaliation one after the other, and he couldn't put faith in chaos - not when he so revered logic.

Mort did relax as Red explained a little of what she had been doing, though, his gaze intent and his ears alert. His brows shot up at the notion of actually bonding with a weapon, chills crawling up his spine as he remembered the brief time, deep within the Haunted House, when he had temporarily became the weapon to a hunter that had no true existence. He had always puzzled over how that had happened, and hearing that the professor had done so voluntarily was ghastly . . . and yet very, very intriguing. The weapons bit painfully because they sapped their Fear, that much he had figured out after soaking up some Fear himself as Insanity's weapon. Had Red needed to constantly replenish her Fear, if that had been an issue? Oh, the questions he wanted to ask . . . The Boogeymen must have more advanced technology than he might imagine to be able to infiltrate Hunter Headquarters like that.

"Mrrr. Want what always want, professor: The Truth. Knowledge. Facts." Now he shrank a bit under Red's gaze despite the determined statement, but he did manage to keep their eyes locked; despite how much second-guessing and frustration and paranoia he was now going through, in this he could not, would not lose conviction in. The quest for that horizon was as intrinsic to him as Fear was. "In this case, want t'know nature've Insanity. What causes it, why is here, what can get rid've it. If have t'go to forbidden knowledge, i-if must risk life, if . . . if must tamper with Cores, then will. Whatever it takes." For science.

The zomboil pressed his mouth into a thoughtful thin line until his stitches itched. "Can't, ah, ask 'bout why needed t'bond with weapon, can I? Or how did it?" The concept of being betrayed by something that practically lived within the same mind was throwing him for a loop. "I, uh, guess next best question should be if remember anything 'bout time as part've Insanity, or how became big beast even? Talked with Riley once, but she said didn't remember anything before certain point . . . n' heard she turned t'big creature too. Lot've us did during Fright Night. Other thing noticed was tale s-said Riley turned t'stone, n' so did you after the fight." What was up with that anyway?

The professor rolled her eyes. "You and another student, it seems. But to what ends will such knowledge get you? It is not like lightning that you can harness and reap the benefits. It is not something that you can tame and cuddle with like a wild minipet." She leaned forward, her hand in the shape of a gun pressed against her temples. "You don't know what it's like in here."

The professor straightened up, shooting the student a scorning glare. "If there was a secret to it then I wouldn't be the only abomination around. As it is, I don't know why me. And considering where weapons are kept in the first place? You will have better luck catching the moon with your own two hands, Zomboil. Give it up. Your knowledge is useless if you don't come back."

He bristled at the very thought of giving up and briefly forgot that he had been cowering under her gaze a moment before. "What else can do with knowledge other than use, 'speriment with it, pass on to others?" he half asked, half growled with annoyance. "This i-isn't secret to take to grave again, is facts that needs be public! Most've Halloweentown doesn't know or care, but if Insanity fog can take school grounds, can take Lair, can seep out've Haunted House like blood from bad wound . . . c-could take Halloween if isn't careful, just like shadows almost did earlier this month." It was like Amity was a hotspot for Bad Things™.

He didn't have reason to believe those things would come back, but really, where did reason fit into any of this madness?

"M'not giving up, Professor. Not allowed to, not in genes, wouldn't live with self if did. If end up failing, m'preparing t'leave notes so others have headstart." Maybe that wasn't enough, but it was comfort to Mort nevertheless. It made him feel like he was doing something even if on the outside it was only a wild goose chase. The zomboil paused, his momentary flare up subsiding even as his shoulders remained tense and he endured the glare. "Don't know what is like for you, n' hope not to ever know, professor," he continued quietly. "But has to be way to cure this. Has t'be. You did it with Jericho."
