Yansa approached the place that several Alkidikes called "home tree." She was tall and graceful, not yet an elder, but certainly well renowned among the Alkidike women. She was certainly on her way to becoming a part of the elite, once she was no longer young enough to participate in battle. She had spear-headed the Alkidike's journey across Tendaji, all the way into Zena. Her renown, since then, had only grown, thanks to the information with which the group had returned.

She looked quizically at the tree, standing at its base, bathed in the glowing fungi surrounding her. "Hello." She called out. "I am looking for Dyakida. I hear that this is her home."

On a beautiful day like today, Dyakida was outside finishing up her new carving tool.
After the... incident... with the old one, she had had to get the materials to make a new one. She rubbed it with a cloth, blew on it, and felt the edge. Yes.
Good.
She was just wrapping it up in cloth for transport back to her room, when she heard someone call out.
It was an unfamiliar voice, but with the tones she had come to associate with her Alkidike sisters.
Though that had fooled her before.

She angled her head towards the voice, querying.
"I am she...?" Now why would someone want her? IF she had been younger, her first thought would be that she was in trouble. Nowadays, she was simply... surprised. "Who are you?"
She rose to a cautious standing position, a hand on the tree to guide and support her.

The woman smiled as Dyakida appeared and moved forward slowly, speaking as she did so, so that her sister would know how close she was.

"My name is Yansa. I hear that you are a skilled tradeswoman... I am here to commission an item from you, if you are willing." She was now standing quite close to the blind woman, her hands extended slightly, welcome Dya's touch, should the woman desire the use of that remaining sense.

"It is a special item, to be made from a rare, but wonderful tree that grows in Tale. It smells strongly when in bloom..." Yansa retrieved several petals from a pouch at her hip, brittle and dried, but still exuding a strong perfume akin to lavender. "I know that the journey might be a difficult one, but I promise, should you complete the task, you will be rewarded."

Commission...
Commission... Her...For an item...
Dyakida was stunned, and her face reflected it for a moment.
This was the sort of request that had never happened even in her dreams.
It was what she wanted to do, and yet she had not expected this to actually happen...

"I am willing..." she said, her voice quiet, but full of conviction.
Yansa. The name was familiar.
Maya had mentioned her name. The alkidike warrior that had spearheaded the expediton to Zena.
Dyakida had heard other rumors about her.
Yansa was a woman of great regard.
She reached out a questing hand as the woman drew closer, touching the offered hands of the other, inspecting them gently and, politely, drawing them away.
"I am honored that you would ask me for such a task, and it is..." she choked back the emotions in a millisecond, record time for her, "Reward enough to know that you would consider me worthy of such honor."
She reached out for the petals

Peyla swooped in and inspected the petals seriously before HER Alkidike could touch them. She had an important job, and the little sprite positively radiated self importance as she picked up the petals and sniffed them herself before placing a petal, imperiously and boldly, into Dyakida's hand.
The petals passed inspection!

Dyakida took the petal... oh Peyla... and let the smell waft to her nose, remembering the scent.
"What item would you have me make for you?" she asked.

Yansa couldn't help but smile at the emotion that welled up and was quickly controlled by her blind sister. A journey such as this might seem a simple feat to most, but would undoubtedly be a challenge for the woman, without her sight.

The woman was startled as a glowing sprite suddenly darted into the area, inspecting the petals clutched in her hand. Yansa laughed at the protective pixie, nodding slightly. "I see you have a companion. Good. I hope that she'll be able to assist you, as we need the item at the end of three days."

Yansa replaced the petals that Dyakida and the sprite had not taken into the pouch at her hip. "A staff, intricately carved and ceremonial. Yet, it needs to be sturdy, capable of holding up, should it come into battle. The tree that you will use is perfect for the task, durable and flexible. It always retains that perfume scent, which adds to that special quality that we want the staff to hold."

The woman smiled. "Thank you. Prepare for your journey and take off in the morning. You will have three days. On the morning of the fourth day, I will be waiting at Aisha to receive the completed staff from you." Smiling, she reached out, gently touching her sister's shoulders, so as not to startle her. "I'm sure it will be beautiful."

With that, the woman left, heading out the way she had come.

Oh. Oh wow.
The woman had left before Dyakida could respond. She took a deep breath.
Wow. She... She couldn't believe it. Something so important as a ceremonial staff. Left to her hands.
Hadn't this been the sort of thing she had dreamed of when she had chosen this path? Hadn't this been what she had decided she would do for the rest of her life?
Just... She hadn't actually expected it to happen. And it was.

"Well, Peyla." she said, finally breathing out, feeling herself become energized, "We have a trip to pack for." she felt her way into the tree and began to pack for her trip.

~~~
Dyakida was awake bright and early. The sun hadn't even risen, not that she minded particularly.
She had been too excited to stay asleep. She was ready to go.
Things were packed, a note- slowly written so as to be legible (and even that she wasn't sure about) was left on the table.
"Anything I'm missing, Peyla?" She asked quietly, taking up her old twig of a qurterstaff. She was going to use it as a walking stick- useful on a long journey. She had found an added benefit in using it to poke at the ground and get a better sense of what was in front of her.
A twitter and a tug on her hair towards the... yes, towards the door out.
"Guess not" said Dyakida, swallowing slightly as she walked out the door, hesitating but a moment before crossing the threshold.
"Well then. To the Tale."
The big open! Peyla knew how to go there! They'd been there before. The sprite took Dyakida's hand and guided her towards the path to the outer edge of the jungle.
The edge between Jauhar and Tale was a vast expanse of fluffy powder-like sand, soft to the touch. Its light color seemed to bounce back any form of light, even the faint morning glow.
As the sun rose higher and the sand began to heat the surrounding air, Dyakida was forced to continue onward, led by Peyla to find the rare tree that she sought.
The tree grew within the vast patches of forest that littered the Tale expanse and would be difficult to find.
Luckily, at least one tree of its kind was known to grow in the closest forest to Dyakida, the one inhabited by most of the leaf tribe members.
It was up to Dyakida and Peyla to find the tree they were searching for.
Silken warmth flowed around her feet as they sank into the giving ground with every footfall. Dyakida kept her senses open, even though she trusted Peyla to guide her. Her antennae stretched towards the openness, seeking a vibration- anything to give structure to the endless space above. Between the soft sand and the lack of a canopy, Dyakida felt almost as if she was floating, detached somehow.
The air here was dry, and became steadily drier. She could feel it on her nose and throat, so used to humidity. She felt odd, as though the air of Jahuar was being forced out, replaced by these foreign breezes.
Which is a silly notion she thought to herself, I've been here before. she frowned as Peyla led on, I didn't feel this way before. Is it because I'm here, not for simple exploration, but for a mission?
Nerves. Yes. That had to be it.
Time was hard to tell for Dyakida, especially since being outside the jungle kept her away from the sounds that she would normally use as cues to help tune her internal clock. Here the sounds were different. Primarily the silence.
It was, to her like floating in a fluid void. Nothingness above, nothingness (thanks to Peyla's guidance) to either side, and only soft warmth on her feet.
Her sense of direction told her that they were heading North-Northeast, but she felt unsure, turned around without the reassuring steadiness of a tree. It was frustrating to rely on Peyla so totally, but Dyakida had no choice. Onward she would go, and she had to trust the little sprite.
Peyla was doing her job! Peyla was doing it well! She didn't know where she was going, but maybe it was this way. HER alkidike was counting on her, and she would be worth counting on...
But she suddenly realized that she was thirsty and hungry! Her alkidike had food and water, so if she sat down and ate, maybe she would share some! Of course she would!
It was food time anyway!
Peyla led Dyakida to a stone and nudged gently.
Dyakida would have tripped on the large rock jutting from the sand if her walking stick hadn't tapped it first, as it was, she had to stumble up to it a bit and feel it to know what it was.
A rock.
Peyla had led her to a rock.
"This isn't a tree." she said matter of factly, though she was grateful to have something solid.
Well of course it wasn't a tree! Even Peyla could tell! Silly silly alkidike! Peyla was hungry. Did peyla have to remind her alkidike? She pushed at the travel pouch, chirping imperiously
Dyakida frowned, feeling at her travel pouch. What was Peyla doing?
Something clicked, or maybe the heat and the patient emptiness of her stomach simply were brought to her attention.
"Oh" She said, feeling a little sheepish. In the void-like space she had imagined herself in, time had stopped being an issue.
"Well, only for a moment..." she sat down and realized her feet were, actually, a little tired.
excitement. Nerves. Dulling sensation, she supposed.
She took out a juicy, sweet fruit.
"Here. Let us share this, quickly, and then keep going..." She took a bite of the fruit, trying to listen in all directions, trying to detect something, anything.
But, other than the welcome change of the rock and the sweet wetness of the fruit, there wasn't much at all.
Peyla munched on fruit until she was full, which didn't take much. She had a job to do. While Dyakida finished her share of the fruit, Peyla tried to figure out where to lead her next.
The sun was high overhead now, signaling midday and brought down the heat of the Tale plains. The light colored sand bounced back the light and created a glare that could hurt eyes.
The rock that Dyakida and Peyla rested against was relatively close to the shade of the first patch of forest in Tale. The patch that they were looking for. The journey would take hours still, but they were closing in on shade, water, and their destination.
Though it couldn't be seen yet, on the outskirts of the forest, children could be heard playing with a rough homemade ball.
It was hot here. Jahuar was hot too, but it wasn't the same. There, it was a wet, living heat. Here, it was a dry, blazing heat like a fire. Dyakida was tempted to find some shade and rest until the worst of it had passed, but there was no cool shade. Just the rock and what might as well to her have been an endless expanse of sand. Her feet hurt from the heat as she stretched them in the dry air.
She had been expecting some discomfort- it was a journey after all, and there wouldn't be any shade until she moved to find it.
She wrapped the core in a cloth- it might yet be useful- before taking a deep breath. It was time to continue on.
She noticed that she could hear the sound of her own breathing against her own heartbeat. She could hear the swishing sounds of sand in the wind that whipped it across her face. A light wind, but she still instinctively shielded her eyes when she felt it, though it would do little good.
And she could hear...
Faint laughter?
She stood up and faced that direction.
"Peyla?"
Or could it be the wind again? She heard the thumping of something hitting the sand repeatedly. A creature of some sort?
Peyla could smell something! Something good from over there! Yes! That was where she would guide her Alkidike!
But... Her alkidike was already facing that way... Peyla made a rude, dissappointed sound, but the mood was gone.
She was a guide! She would guide! Her job was important! They would go, even though it was very hot!
Dyakida felt the sprite take her finger and gently lifted her arm to let the sprite guide her.
"I hope you are leading me to shade..." she muttered. There was no one around to judge, so she spoke her mind. She was hot, and the sun hurt her sensitive skin. What she wouldn't give for a light cloak.
Peyla didn't know but Peyla would lead her well!
Dyakida began to approach the trees of the pocket of forest, along with the children at play. The constant thumping of a ball against trees abruptly stopped when the Alkidike woman came into their vision.
A rather small leaf earthling ran to approach the woman; the only one who did and also the one holding the ball. The others hissed and whispered their disapproval. What are you doing?... Don't go near her... It's dangerous...
The little one stuck out his tongue at the others and stopped at Dyakida's feet. "Hey lady. What're you doing out here?" Rather forward, but children would be children.
The others gave one look at the boy before taking off into the forest. His mom's going to be so mad... I'm not getting in trouble... He has the balllll... Their whining faded into the distance.
Dyakida could feel the shade dance on her face even before she was fully under it. The air was still dry and hot, but she could forgive it that.
Her attention was caught by the now definite light voices of children playing. She smiled slightly. They were afraid? Of her? It seemed Strange to her. It didn't occur to her that alkidikes were big and strange looking, having never really met an earthling up close until after she had lost her sight.
Peyla watched the small twoleg suspiciously as it approached her Alkidike. She crossed her arms and glared as imposingly as she could, which was not at all
Dyakida didn't want to scare this one away. Perhaps it could help her at least find some water before resuming her search for the tree. It, because she couldn't tell the child's gender. Was it female? Was it a male?
"Well" She kneeled down to what was hopefully it's level, "I'm looking for something" she said pleasantly. She wanted to feel out and touch the child, just to make sure it was there, but she refrained.
"And I haven't found it yet."
The little sprite beside the woman caught his attention fast, but he was more interested in the lady.
The youngling watched as this lady kneeled down. It was weird, she was talking to him, but wasn't looking at him. She was looking over him.
"What's wrong with your eyes, lady? Can you even find what you're looking for with them?" The little one in front of Dyakida was brash and unfiltered, as most children are at that age. He looked into the milky white of her eyes and waited patiently for an answer, the ball still in his grasp. Maybe this lady needed help. At least from someone who could talk.
Where did she get a pet like that anyways? The little leaf youngling didn't know what it was, but he wanted one.
PostPosted: Tue May 07, 2013 7:55 am
Rude! Rude rude rude. Peyla had only a basic understanding of spoken language, less when she wasn't listening, but she had heard 'eyes' and a rude tone. Bad little twoleg! She scolded at him in her high pitched voice.
Dyakida ignored Peyla and the sting of the youngling's comments. It wasn't as though she hadn't heard them before. Well she tried to ignore it, anyway, it was difficult to.
Still, she tried to smile a little.
"I don't use my eyes, I use my ears." She skipped over the what was wrong part entirely. Hopefully, the little sprout would drop it. "I listened, I heard you, and I found you." True enough, "But I'm looking for a special tree, and I can't listen for a special tree in a forest of trees." She might as well try to get to the point. It was a gamble, who knew if she could find the tree here.
She'd ask for water next.
She could, sort of. Different leaves made different sounds in the wind, and she could sort of hear them, but there were often so many leaves of all sorts even on the same tree that identification by ear was impossible. Sometimes, other plants made their homes there. And besides, there was a lot of white noise from the other trees. She had tried once, just to see if she could. And it hadn't worked. Naught but a headache.
Touch and smell were better for identifying trees.
"Do you know of a special tree? It has a sweet smell and delicate little petals..."
The youngling giggled at the sprite's antics next to the Alkidike. Whatever that thing was, it sure was silly.
His attention was brought back to the Alkidike in front of him. Looking for a special tree? That would be hard to do without using your eyes. But he could help.
He thought long and hard about the tree that the woman in front of him was describing. Sweet smelling and little petals... He could only think of the normal tall, gnarly, twisting trees that made up the majority of the Tale forest... but... there was this one tree that he liked to play around when he was by himself. He didn't tell anyone he went there because it was so far into the forest his mom would yell at him if she knew. But it did smell sweet, and he would lie under it for hours watching the sun trickle through the leaves when he was tired from playing.
"I think I can help you, lady." With that, he grabbed the Alkidike's hand and tugged a little, hoping she would get up.
