His unsteady pacing on the den floor had left a large circular rut in the dirt. His limp left visible bumps in the path, which he paid little attention to. His mind was elsewhere, very far elsewhere. Something had changed in his mate, and he didn't know what it was. At first he'd simply assumed it was part of the change from a normal pride member, to something much more important. But she'd been in her job for a while now, and things seemed to continue to become stranger between the two. She was slightly distant, and her mood swings were pretty erratic.

It was ... driving him crazy, to say the least. But not for the obvious reason, no he was more worried about why it was happening than the event itself. Fireheart put up with more than enough of his drama that he could easily set aside her temporary flaws... at least he prayed they were temporary. Though if they weren't, he'd still love her more than he could ever describe. Though he'd have to be more careful with his words ... she had been a little snippy at some of his drier jokes lately.

He sighed, the ache in his leg now preventing him from pacing anymore. He would simply have to sit this one down, wait for her to return and try to gently coax it out of her. He winced at the thought, knowing with her recent erratic behavior, that he was in for quite a surprise.

There were some things Fireheart was sure she'd never learn through her life but, time and time again, she was proven wrong. She had been positive she'd never learn how to hunt, or fight, or take care of herself, take care of a whole pride, how to be a good mate, how to be a good queen...and yet here she was, happy and content in her life having learned all these things.

But lately there was something that was bothering her. She couldn't put her paw on just what it was, and it was driving her mad. She had been encountering frustrating things daily, things that she'd never have found annoying before. She knew she had to talk to someone when Vodnitvar had stepped on her paw by mistake while giving her a good morning nuzzle and she had nearly ripped his ear off, both with words and with teeth.

She had been on her way to see her mother when it hit her. Or rather, kicked her. Fireheart nearly fell off her feet as something inside of her moved. It moved! It kicked her! What in the gods' name was...

Oh. Oh.

Fireheart returned home immediately, glowing with pride and embarrassment at the same time. She spotted Vodnitvar in the den still, his bright blue pelt standing out in the darkness. The poor dear...it looked like he had been pacing again. Hopefully this information would help clear his mind.

"I'm back," she said to announce her presence before entering the cave. She moved instantly to his side, butting her head lightly under his chin, nuzzling into his soft mane. It was certainly more of a normal greeting than what she had been giving him recently, but now that she understood what was happening to her, it cleared her hormones. At least, for the time being.

"Your leg must be aching, Vodnitvar. Sit down, dear."

Her unexpected entrance did startle him, but not enough to make him show much interest in it. He was going to remain stone faced, until she caved and told him what he had done wrong. Whatever it was, he could fix it. No, he would fix it. He listened intently as his mate made her way into the back of the cave, he could see her disapproving look without even facing her, She hated when he paced, she knew it agitated his joints. She worried for him, more than he worried for himself.

"I'll sit, but only if you sit with me." His face contorted into a look of sheer pain as he forced his stiff joints to move once again. This time to face his mate and give her a gentle nuzzle on the cheek. "There's something I think we need to talk about." He smiled weakly at her, unsure of how she would take his next bout of words.

"But i'm not gonna start talking until we're both comfortable ...."

"And less capable of attacking one another."

He mumbled his next words, likely still loud enough for Fireheart to hear, but still low enough to get a rise out of her. Patting her paw gently, he looked up at her then down at the floor.

"Shall we take our seats now?"

SilverLutz
Oh wow! This one is waaaaay overdue. I'm so sorry about that D: Don't kill me XD

Fireheart had to hide her smile now that she knew what their 'problem' was. Soon to be quite a few problems if she had anything to say about it. His request was met with a nod, and she sat down beside him so they wouldn't have to move. They'd done a good job finding a den to call their own, with a sandy rather than rocky bottom that was comfortable to lay in, just about anywhere.

"Yes, we do need to talk," she agreed, but she was very interested to see what it was he thought was wrong. His muttered words didn't go unnoticed, but she didn't fault him for saying them. She had been very moody and would probably continue to be for a few months.

"I'm very comfortable," Fireheart finally offered, content to sit beside her mate with enough room for them to touch if needed, but with enough space to have a conversation. "Are you?"

Vodnitvar nodded silently to his mate, as he himself took a seat and made himself comfortable. Or rather, as comfortable as his nerves would allow. He couldn't help it, every possible scenario was playing through his head and through it all he still couldn't place what he could have done wrong.

"I've been thinking ..." He paused, enjoying a moment of silent laughter at his comment. Thinking was definitely an understatement.

'Things are different between us, and I don't know why." he frowned, looking up from under his eyes to catch his mate's eyes. "I've been running my mind in circles all day, trying to figure out what I did ... but I come up with nothing!" Exasperated, he released a pent of sigh and sagged his shoulders.

"So I guess what i'm saying is ... Ugomvi just tell me what's wrong."

He had hoped that by using her proper name, he would attract the level of sincerity he needed. He never used her proper name, it was just too tradition to speak of others in their gypsy names.

Fireheart's ears turned forward as her mate used her real name. They were so used to calling each other 'Fireheart' and 'Vodnitvar' that it was odd to hear 'Straw Dog' or 'Ugomvi'. She had to remind herself to use Straw Dog when they were in the presence of others, but on their own she never used it. Unless she was teasing him, which did happen on occasion.

She reached out a paw to press it against Vodnitvar's gently, not wanting him to worry. "I know what you did," she said solemnly. "And I'm afraid there's nothing you can do to fix it. What's done is done, and we'll move on. Although..."

She allowed herself to smile just a bit.

"I certainly wouldn't mind you doing it again. Not now...some time in the future. When we'll have a chance to breathe again. I get the feeling we'll have our paws very, very full in a few months time." She had been hanging around Riddle Mouth too much, she had. Speaking with riddles and keeping Vodnitvar guessing.

"But I do apologize for stressing you out and making you worry," the lioness murmured, leaning in to nuzzle her cheek against his mane. "Although...I doubt that will change any time soon. I just won't be the one making you worry. In fact, I'll be joining you in it."

Fireheart's words hit him right in the chest. It almost felt like a physical jolt to his senses. To hear her say that what he had done could not be fixed. It tore him up inside, his breathing became heavy as he listened to her words. Then he noticed that very coy smile ... though still noticeably worried, he was now more curious than anything. The feeling of her paw against his, was helping him to relax, though his chest still ached with a guilt he couldn't place.

"You're smiling ... I don't see what's so funny."

His tone was a little more gruff than usual, something he would regret later. But for now, his worry was clouding his judgement. How could she be so cool, calm, and collected when she herself had just said he'd made in irreversible mistake?

He listened intently, hanging onto her every word. Then little by little, things became a little more clear. Definitely not crystal clear, but he felt he now had a better grip on the situation.

"Months?!" Vodnitvar had to gulp down air, it felt like things were spiraling out of control around him. His grip tightened around Fireheart's paw, and he placed his other one near her as well.

"You don't mean ...."

The poor old lion had no time to finish his sentence. In a matter of seconds he had gone from clinging to his mate for dear life, to a limp throw rug on the floor of the den.

Vodnitvar had fainted.

Had to be done xD

Vodnitvar's gruff tone of voice didn't go unnoticed by Fireheart, but she let it slide. She was having too much fun teasing him. Besides, she had been growling and snapping at him the past few weeks, it was only fair that he should be allowed to grumble a bit, too. Especially while she was tugging his whiskers with all these riddles.

She watched with a slightly smug but mostly pleased smile as Vodnitvar's gears turned slowly, putting the pieces into place. It wasn't until he passed out that she knew he got it. She chuckled, rolling her eyes a bit before leaning in to nuzzle her nose against her mate's.

"Come on, dad," she murmured. "I'm the one with what feels like eighteen cubs in me, you can't be passing out on me like this." She was sure there weren't more than six, but if it were any less, they were a very rambunctious group. Rolling around and kicking already, and they were probably still quite small.

She lifted a paw to gently hit Vodnitvar's cheek, hoping to rouse him a bit quicker. "Don't make me drag you down to the sea and throw you in. You know I will."

Her words managed to come through the thick fog that was surrounding his head, but it was still difficult to comprehend. He heard the word eighteen, and again his heart did a cliff dive and he almost lost it all. But his common sense was strong, surely she wouldn't have eighteen cubs! That wasn't even possible!

The light taps against his cheek roused him enough to muster a smile from his maw. It was dopey, almost comical in a way. Definitely not what one would expect from someone as serious as himself. But his heart was alive with excitement and shock! He felt alive! He was going to be a .... Dad. The word sent a shiver down his spine as he lifted his head to look into Fireheart's eyes once more.

"You-You're sure about this?" Now grinning from ear to ear he slowly pulled himself to a sitting position once again. Still a little wobbly with his weight, it was definitely his safest option.

"Are we prepared for this?!"

As her mate came around again, Fireheart felt her chest warm with happiness. If the smile was anything to go by, he was as excited as she was. Leaning in a bit to help him get up, she nuzzled her nose into Vodnitvar's fluffy mane, purring happily.

"I'm positive about this. Unless the hare I ate this morning is still alive and kicking," she said, snorting just a bit. That would be rather comical could it happen. Mistaking oneself for being pregnant because of a hare jumping around in her stomach.

The question made her shake her head to clear her mind of those thoughts, although now she really, really wanted another hare to eat. That would explain the strange cravings for fruit and sweet things, then. She had never been fond of the stuff before now, and lately any berries or fruits she found she devoured happily. "If we're not, then we're out of luck," she said as she sat back, shifting to let Vodnitvar press his paw against her stomach. "Just here," she said, motioning with her own.

"One of them is very feisty today," she added. "It's how I realized I wasn't alone.'

He tried to bite his tongue. He really, truly did, but she'd left herself wide open for his attack.

"You might want to rethink that option, with all the food you've been nibbling on as of late. Is it really such a farfetched idea to think you didn't swallow one hole?" The smile on his face only grew wider as he prepped himself for the incoming attack that his mate was sure to launch. He loved her so much, but at a time where his emotions were so high ... well she would do well to prepare for his snarky comments.

As he sat there, his mind was running circles around itself. So quickly, it felt as though another fainting spell was just around the corner. These two were going to be parents. PARENTS! HIM! A DAD! The thoughts rushing through his head were maddening, but also incredibly uplifting. He felt like he were walking on air, nothing could bring him down.

Vodnitvar jumped at the press of his paw, he'd been so lost in his own thoughts, Fireheart's touch had hardly registered. But now as he lay his paw gently on her warm belly, a new sensation ran through his body. It ran straight from his paw right to his brain, the down his back straight to his tail.

Pride.

Swallowing hard, he jumped again as the small bump in her belly pressed roughly against his paw. "Was that?" Before he could finish, another rough and tumble kick brushed against his paw. "Its like they're ready to burst out of there already!" He laughed a bit, trying to hold back the stream of tears building just behind his eyes.

Vodnitvar broke the connection with his mate briefly enough to bring his head down to her belly with his paw. Gently he placed his fuzzy mane against it and listened hard for a noise. But all he heard was the gurgling of Fireheart's belly. Looks like he'd be doing a bit more hunting now that she was eating for so many.

"Hello in there ..." He whispered, rubbing her tummy gently as he spoke. "Your Mother and I .... we can't wait to meet you."

SilverLutz
Oh god Voddy fluff D:

He's so adorable for such a grouchy old brute.
PostPosted: Thu May 23, 2013 6:25 pm

Vodnitvar's comment made Fireheart roll her eyes and swat at his shoulder, claws sheathed so as not to do any damage, just leave a bit of a sting behind. "Watch that mouth of yours," she warned. Even though she figured out why she had been so grumpy as of late, it didn't mean it would change her demeanor any. The little teasing from her mate soon left her mind as he paid attention to the still unborn cubs just a small wall of skin and fur away. She flinched just a bit as the cubs kicked at their father's paw, her stomach protesting the constant movements.

"Well...I suppose there's no question that at least one of them will be a fighter," she mused as Vodnitvar lowered his head and...dear gods. She groaned softly and reached down to playfully push his cheek.

"You're a sentimental fool, I hope you know," she teased right back, "Talking to my stomach...it's a good thing there seem to be a lot of them, otherwise no one would notice and think you'd gone insane talking to my midsection." Some lionesses only had one cub, after all, and barely grew. She was decently sized already for how far along she was, so she knew she'd be waddling something awful when the time just before they arrived came about.

Fireheart's happy musings only made his smile grow more, and the prospect of a fighter among them ... it was a joy to think about. "Well I guess that means we're going to have our paws full in a lot of ways. Something tells me we aren't going to be your typical parents." Voddy laughed lightly pulling himself up Fireheart's belly and nuzzling against her cheek.

"And I think i'd be perfectly OK with that assumption." He nearly cooed the words as he imagined the scene in his head. It probably was quite a sight to see, but he cared not about that. He simply wanted these cubs to know who he was right from the start. He would talk to them every night, day, morning, evening, anytime! Just so long as they knew his voice.

"Yes well, this sentimental old fool happens to be pretty darn proud right now. So excuuuuuuse me for being all sappy, you don't seem to mind when i'm being all sweet and adorable to you. Do I detect a little bit of ... jealousy?" He had to cover his mouth to keep himself from doubling over in laughter, but again prepared himself for another 'love tap.'

"Y'know something. Forget what I said before, I think we're going to be just fine .... As long as you can survive carrying around a tummyful of little warriors for a while longer." He paused for a brief moment, imagining how Fireheart would look in just a short amount of time. He'd seen quite a few of the pregnant mothers of the pride, some of them with small litters, others with really large ones. This was definitely going to be amusing.

"But then we both have to survive until their grown ..." Voddy let out a loud groan as he turned back to his mate once more.

"Oh no ... what if we have girls?! Then i'll have to chase away all kinds of boys ...." A small growl began to build in his throat, and he lay a paw once more on Fireheart's belly.

"Its ok, Daddy will keep all the icky boys away from his little girls."

SilverLutz
PostPosted: Thu May 23, 2013 6:48 pm

Fireheart did give him another love tap, this time against his cheek, but it was much gentler than the swat to his shoulder had been. "Look at you," she muttered. "Making all these assumptions about me." There was a teasing look in her eyes even if her face was frowning, though. She had grown very fond of teasing her mate, and it was amusing to do so out with the other members of the pride. They'd think she was really upset with him, but he'd walk off laughing and they'd chuckle about it later that night in their den.

"I think we'll manage," she said with a small nod before snorting. "Any cub of mine, boy or girl, will do just fine keeping away from 'icky boys' or 'icky girls'," she reminded him, leaning in to n** playfully at his cheek. "Besides...not all boys are icky," she purred, rubbing her head under his chin. As he had said earlier, she couldn't be more proud of herself, of her mate, and of her future cubs. She knew they wouldn't be the traditional Kizi family, but they would be one of the closest ones out there, she was positive.

"Hm...I wonder who they'll look like," she murmured very softly. "I do hope they have your lovely green eyes. But for the sake of camouflage, perhaps a bit more of my coloring would suit them well. You do stick out like a sore paw, my dear."

Voddy merely grumbled under his breath at Fireheart's icky comment. Of course he wasn't icky. He was just a creeper! He snorted as he thought back to when he'd first met his lovely mate. She had been much younger than him, and she still was. But that hadn't stopped his heart for falling for her all the same. "I'm not so sure its our cubs we'll have to worry about." He smiled a bit as he continued to reminisce about his past. "So much as it is the persistence of some boys. Need I remind you of our lovely friend Feather Ruffler? Imagine her .. only as a boy ... and in love with one of our daughters." That would definitely get the point across. He absolutely knew that Feather Ruffler's actions had gotten under Fireheart's skin, whether she wanted to admit it or not.

As the conversation went on, and the topic of appearance came up he couldn't help but give Fireheart a very accusatory glare. "Well! Now look who's making fun of who." He did his best to look both hurt and taken aback, but it came off as more of a creepy smirk. "Besides I think they'll do fine regardless. They are our cubs after all. They will learn from the two finest fighters this pride has to offer, and then they'll learn from everyone else. They will be an unstoppable force!" Realizing what he was saying all too quickly, he choked back his words and let out a nervous laugh.

"On second thought. Maybe we shouldn't teach them everything we know. We don't want them to get too smart do we?"

He is so adorable! His fluff with his cubbins is unmatchable! Even before they were born he was still the besest Dad EVER!
