Talfrid was not sure he liked what he was learning out here, free of his small little world while he was growing up. He had been isolated, and knew only what he needed to, in order to be a strong fighter, a silent stalker, and a quick assassin. Now he was learning more vital things to fitting in.

And finding he was not as good at it as he was the rest.

He was not used to failing, or embarrassing himself. And that was exactly what he was doing now. He could not think why it was all so complicated: all he was doing was trying to talk to a girl! And yet he could not manage it, for this woman. She was different.

The feelings she brought out in him were new, strange, and completely flummoxed him. He needed more help, but he also needed to learn how to listen to the advice he got. He had told his friend that he would not go and stalk the girl. And then, basically, did the opposite of what he said.

He was sitting at their table, dreading speaking to Bran about it but knowing he had no one else to go to and Bran, at least, understood Talfrid in a way that no one else did. He would help, if anyone could.

Bran made no attempt to hide his approach, nor did he do much to mask his expression, well, no more so than normal one might say. He carried a book tucked under his arm, marching with deliberate, measured strides towards Talfrid, when he drew within arm’s reach he took the book in both hands, raised it, and –thumped- Talfrid on the head with it.

“You…. are….an….idiot.” He said emphasizing each word.

“Take a good guess who I spoke to!” He ordered and folded his arms.

Talfrid realized very suddenly what friendship brought with it. Complacency. There was no way a stranger would have been able to walk up to him without him knowing just what they were up to. But then, normally strangers had no cause to walk up to him and hit him on the head with a book.

In any case, he had no defense for it, and the blow surprised him. He ducked his head and put his hands up in surrender.

"I am sorry!"

And he was. He had really messed up with that woman, and he knew that Bran must have spoken with her about it. He did tell the other that he would play middle man if he was needed. And it was clear that Bran was needed: Talfrid absolutely failed at meeting her. They'd spoken twice and he still did not know her name, and she did not know his.

"I... I did not know how to speak to her...."

“That was rather the impression I got.” He still had his arms crossed, if friendship had done a positive thing it was that it could tell you that on no uncertain terms, he was still irritated. “And I think I did say something about ‘don’t stalk her’, didn’t I?” His foot tapped.

“Annnd according to her she felt like you were… following her around! People don’t LIKE that Talfrid, Generally speaking unless someone has agreed to play ‘hunter and prey’ in the woods, which she also found less than savory behavior from either of us…then you don’t DO that.”

He sighed, the irritation fading and sat down beside you.

“She said she MIGHT talk to you again if you talk to her like other people do. You’ve seen them do it, just… talk.” He said sinking slightly in his pose from ‘stiff’ to ‘wilted’.

Talfrid looked at Bran helplessly, his eyebrows drawn in concentration. He nodded his head slowly as Bran told him off, accepting it for what it was.

He was in trouble, definitely.

"I know, I know she did not like it. I was not trying to follow her! I was trying to speak with her, but I could not think of what to say... and I ended up waiting for a chance to say anything but it... it turned into me following her."

It was a pathetic excuse, really. He only stalked her because he was used to stalking people! That did not make it okay, though. He sighed and nodded his head along with Bran's words.

He took a breath.

"I want to speak with her, but when I come close I forget how to... do so. And if she thinks I am strange, and following her... perhaps I should not face her again..."

Bran started to say something, opening his mouth and then closing it again. He raised a hand as though he wanted to illustrate some point…and dropped it again.

“I’m going to have to help you aren’t I…I’m going to have to help you guys break the ice in some kind of vaguely sane fashion…oh god I’m neutral ground.” He bent forward to let his hand rest on his book.

“Damnit damnit damnit…” He cursed. “Ok… so…I’ll go…WITH you to talk to her. And by the way, HI is a great starting point, just for future refrence.”

Talfrid watched him for a moment, thinking that was an excellent plan, then shook his head and thought better of it. "I cannot ask you to do that for me. No, I must do this myself."

He leaned back in his chair, watching the other, though he was actually just spacing out and trying to think up a good plan. It was very difficult for him to think in these terms. Other people had not been his concern before. Not like this, anyway.

It bothered him to be troubling his friend so much, and he wanted to set things right with the lady that had captured his attention, as well.

"Perhaps I can... I can do something. To apologize. I can get her a gift, something, and try to... deliver it to her. In person."
PostPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 9:16 pm

“I can do it if you NEED me to.” He said firmly.

He took a deep breath and sighed. “You might try flowers, but I wouldn’t get anything more complicated than that. Girls like flowers…or chocolate, but some people are…well their sometimes allergic to flowers too.” He crinkled his nose thinking. “ok…well, anyhow most people like flowers. You should also apologize again, possibly admit you are an idiot, because you were.” He glanced at Talfrid and gave him a stern glance.

He looked deeply thoughtful for a long moment, such thoughtful, pensive moments could either lead to a great deal of trouble or a rather amazing insight, sometimes both. Actually, it was more often both than strictly one or the other if only because people didn’t always appreciate the insights.

Fortunately, he’d learned at least somewhat to curb his tongue.

“We should…YOU should practice. Pretend, pretend I’m her.”

Talfrid probably needed him to, but he also wanted to prove to them all that he could do this on his own. He was not going to let a girl get the better of him, when he knew that she was special and deserved better treatment than he was giving her.

He had to learn the basic thing that most knights knew. How to be chivalrous.

"Flowers... yes. I will try them. And perhaps a book, though maybe not the one you've used as a weapon," he tried a small smile, arching an eyebrow sheepishly, before nodding. "And I will apologize to her... and perhaps introduce myself... I do not know her name... still."

He must not be very good at following people, he thought, if he still didn't know that. He'd have to work on his information gathering skills another time.

"You want me... well. I do not have any flowers," he tilted his head, then cleared his throat. "I... I... am... forgive me for... stalking... I..." He fumbled and looked helpless. Even pretending someone was her made him tongue tied.

Bran thumped Talfrid lightly on the head again after the weapon-book joke. He felt it was proper and right ‘on principal’ to have that kind of follow up.

He sat back and looked, well, prim as Talfrid started, arched an eyebrow at the faltering, waited, and sagged again.
“You’re going to have to keep going you know.” He prompted. “You…what, you won’t do it again? You…you need to say something poetic maybe. She’s a GIRL. She’s a –girly- girl I think too, not like Daphne, try…saying you were too…intimidated by her beauty or something. I mean I’m not saying Lina isn’t mind you, I don’t want… oh never mind, keep pretending.”

Talfrid nodded his head.

He got up and bowed, at least not the type to be embarrassed by things like this. This was practice, which he had done all his life, just in a new form. He had to do it, to improve, and he wanted to no matter what. So he did his best to treat Bran as he wanted to treat Fiona.

"My lady..." he said slowly, mastering himself. "Forgive my previous displays... I... I was made nervous by your beauty and lost my nerve... I followed you only because I wished to speak with you, but forgot the words."

He looked hopeful that he was doing better, at least able to form complete sentences this time.

"Perhaps then I would ask her for her name?"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 05, 2013 10:30 pm

“Better…” Bran said after a moment and nodded. “And… yes I think you could ask for her name. Be sure you introduce yourself too, unless she already said your name. I can’t remember if I told her or not.” He sounded distressed to be unsure, but that was no surprise. “I think…her name was Fiona, but you SHOULD ask to be sure. If she knows you know her name, or something like it she might think you were collecting information on her. Trust me, people don’t like that.” He said with a serious expression on his face.

“no…they definatly don’t like you knowing what they didn’t say. But yes…she gives you her name. She might be hesitant to forgive…so expect some scolding.”

He cleared his throat and spoke in something of a falsetto.
“ I really don’t approve of you following me, I’m not a deer you can hunt! It seems really dishonorable that you’re doing that to people.” He affected her mannerism as best he could for having interacted with her for such a short time. But really…Talfrid should know what he was probably going to hear.

Talfrid nodded his head. He was not used to being scolded but he was getting better at taking it. He found he messed up quite a lot in ways he had never thought about before, so he was learning how to deal with that.

He watched Bran thoughtfully.

Bran's voice was not very much like Fiona's, but then, this was just an act. It didn't need to be, though it made it harder for Talfrid to focus. He was amused, and he tried to hide it.

"I did not mean to treat you like that, or make you feel like I was trying to dishonor you or myself." He bowed again, shaking his head slowly. "Do you think she'll be very cross? I fear I may have done more damage than can be fixed..."

He hesitated. “I…hmm.” He murmured. “…I didn’t quite talk to her long enough to be sure.” He admitted and frowned. “He squinted slightly and re-ran the conversation in his head. “No…I think she’s at least a little interested. I mean she was pleased to hear you thought her pretty I think. So either she’s not been told that a great deal or she’s one of those people that sort of, thrive on being reminded that she is pretty.”

He touched a hand to his chin thinking. “Let’s hope it’s the first. So… assume she’ll be willing to forgive so long as you don’t…follow her again. I mean if she invites you to that’s ok.” He waved his hands to emphasize the point. “So…lets see.”

He cleared his throat and tried to pitch his voice like hers again, it came out as a bit of a squawk.

“Well, you should talk to a person as another person, you shouldn’t treat them like prey! It’s quite ‘creepy’.” He scolded, though he wasn’t positive that ‘creepy’ was a word she’d use but it seemed a ‘girly’ thing to do.

He folded his arms. And let his voice drop. “You should probably ask about her, what she likes, what you should do instead, maybe where she’d consider meeting you!”

He blushed a bit, the color draining from his face except for his cheeks and nose, at least. He shifted uncomfortably.

"You....you told her I thought she was pretty?"

It was a true statement, at least. He did think that. But it made him very nervous to know that she knew he felt that way. Did it make the stalking thing worse? Or did it justify it a little bit? No, of course it didn't. There was no reason to follow someone around, unless you were planning on killing them and absolutely could not be seen. But this was not that.

He needed to keep what he knew about being an assassin and what he knew about being a person in different parts of his brain, for easier and separate access.

"I... I'm sorry... you think I am creepy. I..." he was back to being embarrassed and he cleared his throat. "I just wanted to meet you..." He frowned at his feet, then had an idea. "Well. Perhaps... I can ah, I can arrange to have her meet me somewhere, so I am there before she arrives. Then I cannot possibly follow her there."
