They'd stopped by the labs early, and intended to spend the rest of the day relaxing.
Their last leave day had been in December, after six months of being stuck on the island except when they were on the job. So they'd spent the whole time shopping. Furniture, restocking, Christmas...
This time, they didn't have too much on the agenda. They'd looked up some Tattoo shops, and found somewhere warm. California's weather was in the fifties, but it was an overcast 77 in Miami, and in some roomy, comfortable civilian clothes, Harrison stepped into the sandy stall of a cement bathroom. An under construction sign was looped on the wall outside.
"You guys want to get breakfast first?" Harrison asked.

Rep, as was almost always the case on leave, was practically bouncing off the walls. A chance to get off the island again, and the prospect of tattoos, he could hardly contain himself. He even intended to stop off at a piercing studio to celebrate. Despite everything else, things were looking up, at least for today.
He'd even worn his favourite shirt.
"I could go with some breakfast." he purred. "The more ridiculous the better. Think they sell kebab this early?"

The part about overcast was mildly disappointing, but the weather was very comfortable here, Jordan had to admit. "Breakfast sounds great," he agreed. "Early rush ought to be easing off about now. I bet there's a diner somewhere nearby. I could go for some pancakes and bacon." He grinned. "And coffee."

Harrison stretched.
"So long as there's plenty to go around. I'm ******** famished."
He tried one of the sinks. The knobs creaked, but the faucet stayed dry. "It's broke," he noted. He moved to the door instead, which could only be opened part-way, blocked by a chain. Immediately, he could hear the ocean, and the lingering septic smell gave way to fresh air and a salty breeze.
He ducked under the chain, squeezing out the door and into a small, sequestered parking lot.
"It's probably been half a year since I've eaten on the mainland."

Rep followed along, in his case tempted to just snap the chain. He resisted and ducked under aswell. It was hotter than he'd thought, even for the time of year. He kept expecting everywhere they went to be as cool and brisk as Scotland. It was a good thing he hadn't been able to wear his official jacket.
"No been too long for me I guess. I just still get cravings for impossible s**t, like a pie from greggs or something."
He was glad it was overcast, he didn't want to add sunburn to his collection of maladies.

"Good place for a portal," Jordan commented, and followed them out, taking a deep breath of fresh air and looking around curiously. "Wonder how the water is this time of year."
"Yeah, I'm hungry. What's Greggs?" he asked Rep.

"I wore my swimtrunks, just in case," Harrison said. "Not sure if we're uh, supposed to, though."
He had also brought a backpack and his bandaid tin.
"Might as well head towards the strip," Harrison said, leaving the parking lot and heading along the road. The first restaurant they came across was a Seafood place, and looked like it was only open for dinner. There were also a couple of fast food joints. Ice cream. ...Clothing store.
"Maybe we oughta see if we can get a phone directory..."

Likewise, Rep had brought his backpack, mostly out of feeling naked without at least some survival junk, leaving the island unprepared for stranding and/or massive attack by a monster was almost criminal. Other than being absolutely cut off from the island, he was prepared for very little else, not sure how you even went about finding somewhere to eat in a strange city. Maybe if they had the internet, but that was a mostly far-off dream. He wistfully regretted leaving the laptop on the island, he never wanted to risk it or a runic malfunction, but still, it might have been nice to get connected.
"Greggs is a bakery with badass s**t man, sausage rolls, pies, steak bakes, chicken bakes. And at the other side they sell caaakes. Fairy cakes, empire biscuits, french fancies, yum yums. Mmmh. Though man, now I'm ******** starving."
He seemed to perk right up at the idea of swimming. "I didn't bring like, any trunks but. That's never stopped me from swimming before."

"Yeah, I don't know, but I could at least get my feet wet," Jordan said. "Breakfast first though." He pointed to a service station on the corner. "Bet they've got a phone book we could use."
"That sounds good," he answered Rep. "All kinds of stuff, huh?"

The service station sounded fine to him. In the end they didn't have to ask. Out front was an ancient payphone with a phone book chained to it.
Harrison leaned against the booth and flipped through the yellow pages.
"Breakfast....breakfast....breakfast....some of the hotels around here got breakfast bars."

"I bet I could tear that in half." Rep mused, eyeing the phone book entirely useless in as far as navigation went. "I bet I probably could. That would be cool."

"Book, hell. You could probably rip the ******** booth in half. I just don't want to carry around quarters the rest of the day."
Harrison scanned the addresses.
"Closest one's about a block from here, although there's a whole line of hotels so, we'll be able to find something."

Rep looked placated by the idea he could wreck the entire booth and gave up on his idea of pursuing the book, not that he rated his chances of being allowed to anyway with Jordan putting his foot down on it. He sidled over and plunked his chin on his shoulder with a stupid grin.
"But why?" he said, simply for the sake of being annoying.
It was a good thing Harrison was actually paying attention to their destination, because Rep's attention span was shorter than usual.

Jordan laughed and hooked his arm around Rep's waist. "Because someone else might want to use it, and how pissed would you have been if someone ripped it in half when we wanted to look at it?"
"Lead on," he told Harrison, grinning.
