Meridith Banes, with her hands in her jacket pockets, and her bangs in her eyes, waited straight backed beneath a cherry tree, the tree that she and Sophie had designated as their "meeting tree". Since now they were at a different schools, it would be easiest for them to meet there, so Meri could provide her watchful eye as they walked home. It was a good plan. Meri had her shoulders snapped straight, her eyes gazing across the elementary school front as children came spilling out from it's interior. The school bell had rung now too long ago, and it was only moments now until she would see little Sophie Binks bounding her way through the children for the cherry tree. Usually, the mere thought of her little friend coming over to her, straight to her, made her puff with pride. There was a great duty she held in their friendship, in caring for Sophie and making her smile. It absorbed all of her attention, her energy, and while this was still true, there was still something wrong this day, something incredibly wrong.

There was another thing on her mind.

Last night, her mother hadn't come home, not until it was midnight, way past Meridith's bedtime. She stayed home, alone, with a dinner of box made pancakes set for two on a table that used to hold places for three. She waited for an hour, not eating the meal, before she went to wait at the door, phone in hand. She called her mother's work three times, each time not getting an answer, and it took up upon herself to call someone else at the college. She was told her mom was staying late to complete work, which eased Meridith's mind, and then she went about the house to complete chores, pancakes still on the table.

By the time her mom returned, Meridith was wide awake and curled up in her father's sofa-chair, a book in her lap and blankets around her shoulders. The pancakes were like rubber and even when they were reheated, they didn't taste as good as they could have been. They haven't been tasting like pancakes for a couple months now.

It still weighed heavily on her mind, her eyes burning slightly from the loss of sleep. But even then, when she saw the ribbons in Sophie's hair, she couldn't feel the tiredness as much as before.

Just as predicted, the little blonde girl excitedly pushed through the crowd of children lining up for the bus and carpool as carefully as she could. She gave muttered apologies if she fumbled and knocked into someone more than she intended but never once did she look back, her eyes firmly on her goal; her prince.

It was the same every school day. Prince Meri would await the arrival of the princess beneath the cherry tree once her studies concluded. From there, the royals would stroll through their grounds and discuss their days and royal matters, as a prince and princess of neighboring kingdoms ought to! When Princess Sophie was within a few yards, braids swinging wildly behind her as one hand clung to her hat so it wouldn't fall from her head. Her backpack swung noisily from side to side but the straps kept it clinging tightly to her with no danger of falling off. She tried to call out for Meri's name but all that came out was a gleeful squeal that raised in volume until she puttered to a halt. Her arms wrapped around Meri's waist and her face pressed against Meri's stomach as her chest bumped roughly into the older girl's thigh, stopping her the rest of the way.

"Meri, Meri, Meri!" she chuckled, bouncing and digging her heels into the grass without relinquishing her grip. Sophie nuzzled her face further into Meri's jacket before leaning back and looking up, grinning ear to ear with bright eyes. "I'm so glad you're here to rescue me! Today was boring! Bedivere slept the whole day, too. What a lazy bear!" Leaves crunched under her feet as she finally parted ways with her prince, though refused to break contact completely. One of her hands grasped eagerly, small fingers wrapping around Meri's larger ones. She swung their arms between one another, unable to rid herself of her smile.

She was completely unaware of the problems brewing in the prince's kingdom, the strain between King and Queen Banes, or the stress it was putting on her prince. Sophie had no clue, save for Meridith's slightly more tired disposition, but it was easily glossed over in her excitement. "We should adventure, today," she stated, her done suggesting it was already decided. Yes, they would adventure before going home. Bedivere needed to stretch his legs and they needed to immerse themselves in wonders beyond the mundane of simple study. Nothing else mattered to the princess at that moment.

With the lifting of her chin, Meridith brushed the bangs out of her eyes as the gentle breeze pushed them forward into her gaze. She needed to be aware of the children before her. She knew that Sophie would come to her, but there was a watchful part of her that wanted to make sure of every little step that would lead her close. She couldn't help it, this being a relatively new routine for them, she had to make sure nothing went wrong. But, without hint of problem or otherwise, Meri's swift eyes caught sight of Sophie's bouncing little head through the crowd. She still seemed so little to her, like when they first met a few years ago, but Sophie had certainly grown. Her body was developing fast into that awkward gangly state, her thin limbs somehow possessed by the power to thrust her forward at a startlingly fast rate. Meri was in that state as well, her body slow developing, leaving her small in stature. Sophie, though, was also small, her size masking her true age.

To Meri and Sophie, for a time, it felt like they would stay this way forever, blessed by forgotten boys and girls, and perhaps, they too, would fly away together to some distant star where things were all games and play and nothing else mattered.

That's stupid.

Meri's wistful thoughts collapsed with a thud, slaughtered easily by the realization that things weren't that easy in reality. They were never that easy. She was reminded again of that last night.

Still...There was a part of Meri, that valiant prince, still fighting against that irrefutable epiphany. Things could be easy, she promised herself, things could work out and dreams could come true. Oh dear, she thought to herself, that sounded so cheesy, and yet at the same time she needed to hear that just as much as she needed to see and hear little Princess Sophie. Perhaps her Princess would help.

"Sophie," said Meridith with relief, summoning up the strength for one honest smile. How could she not smile at the sight of blonde Sophie running towards her, her pigtails snapping behind her bouncing shoulders like banners on some proud castle? She caught the force of Sophie's run against her body, steadying them with the backwards prop of her foot. She felt a brief return of warmth, her smile brightening the greyness of her face. Feeling Sophie hugging her, nuzzling her stomach, made her remember what it was like to be excited to see another person. "I'm here, as dutiful and as always," Meri promised, dropping slowly down onto her knee so that it was easier to be at eye level with Sophie. It also made her role in their relationship all the more princely, kneeling on her knee like that. It made her feel proud and powerful and royal in the past, burdened with some glorious imaginary purpose, but...Now no longer. "Ah," she said, trying to force excitement through her tones, "An uneventful day, then, but I'm glad to hear that you escaped unscathed! If Bedivere was sleeping, though, it is a good sign that there is nothing to worry about."

Meri smiled when she felt their hands weaving together, her face's forced expression softening into something more honest. She got onto her feet again and was about to open her mouth, to suggest coming home with her to make lunch, but then...

Adventure.

For some reason, the word struck fear into Meri's heart. Her relaxed face trembled again into something less confident, but she knew she had to be strong. She battled away that twitch and tried again to smile. "If you want to, then may it be by your decree. We will head to the castle," Meri said. With the nod of her head, she started walking towards the back way that would lead to their neighborhood, a trail that would take them through the untouched golden fields surrounding the neighborhood. That trail would lead them to the park that beat at the heart of their home, a vast park with many tall trees and buses and hills. In the center of all that was their castle, the playground.

As they walked, Meri hoped to be distracted by her friend, "...Do you have homework, today, Sophie? Any reading?"

"No," Sophie trilled in agreement as she pulled back from the hug, "No danger. Just the boredom monster lurking!" She couldn't help but beam at Meri when her prince took a knee. Being on the same eye level was very respectful and humble of the prince! Especially when Princess Sophie, herself, was so small.

Sophie shrugged off her backpack and plopped its bottom onto the grass. Partially zipped up, right in the middle, was Bedivere, complete with his cape and crown. Sophie carefully released the bear from his bondage and zipped up her parcel completely. Meri was trusted with holding him until the bag was returned to her shoulders. Upon reuniting, Sophie offered Bedivere the same amount of affection she'd given Meri; the teddy bear was held close, squished tight against her face, and swayed to and fro until it was time to take Meri's hand.

"To the castle!"

Her voice carried across the field with no small amount of whimsy. Bedivere was swung towards the air in delight, then pulled close to her chest. The question of homework caused the young princess to pout: she did not like her royal studies but knew they had their place.

"Yeees" Sophie mumbled with her shoulders slumped. Her hand clung to Meri's with friendly need. "I have to do math, we're starting division. There's some reading and I have to write something. I'm going to write about our adventure today!"

As soon as they reached the distant jungle gym, the castle, Sophie released Meri's hand and skittered the rest of the way. The playground was laden with wood chips and soft mulch, and her feet sent much of it scattering. There were a few other children around on the playground but the jungle gym had yet to be claimed; Sophie and Meri protected it from sieges every time they arrived early. Sophie tossed her bookbag through one of the large holes and it landed unceremoniously in the center of the cage, protected by the castle's walls. Bedivere was tucked neatly into the neck of her jacket with only his head and arms dangling out. Her tiny hands and feet found the rungs as she climbed, climbed up towards the top, then tucked her legs around one of the bars and maneuvered herself inside. With a squeal, Sophie let go of the bar and hung upside down by her legs, and laughed when her red cap fluttered down to be with her bag.

"The castle is safe!" Sophie announced proudly as she let her arms go limp. Bedivere seemed to mimic the motion.
