The gutter rat whimpered miserably as another kick collided with his ribs.
The head police officer laughed with mirth as he placed his boot atop the
boy's head, grinding into the mud. "Come on, rocket boy! Why don't you get
some of your friends to save you?! Tell us the location of the hideout!" The
boy opened his mouth to speak and the officer kicked him in the jaw. "WHO
GAVE TRASH LIKE YOU PERMISSION TO TALK,
HUH?" The officers
laughed and continued kicking.

A voice called out a few yards away. "Sergeant Hughes! A rocket was
spotted 2 miles from here! They think it was Shaw, sir!" The boy felt the
pressure leave his head as the head officer turned away. "Shaw? That
sunuvabitch! Let's go, boys!" The kicks stopped coming as the whirring of
sirens began and faded into the distance.

Walpurgis' eyes opened slowly, a cold sweat causing his shirt to cling to his torso. The rocket sighed, climbing out of his bed. It was the same dream. It had gone away for a long time, but it was back, and it seemed determined to mess with him. Walpurgis pulled the shirt over his head, slinging it into the hamper as he walked into the bathroom connected to his room. Walking to the sink, he turned on the water, splashing it into his face.

He looked into the mirror, watching the water drip off his face like the rain that eventful day in Saffron. He grabbed a towel, drying the water. He'd ignored the dream for a while, but during the Rinual Mountain mission, it had caused him to slip up. Caused him to take unnecessary risks. It was foolish. Walpurgis closed his eyes again, leaning against the wall.

He couldn't ignore the dream any longer.

A few minutes later, Walpurgis left his room, locking it behind him. He had showered and put on his new uniform, having been promoted to agent since the Mountain. Apparently someone had put in a good word for him, but Walpurgis didn't feel that he truly deserved it. He had nearly compromised the mission in his rage. He shook his head free of the thoughts; best not to linger on them. He was an agent now, regardless of whether he felt he deserved it or not.

After a time of walking, he finally arrived at his destination. He stood outside the office of one of the higher-ups, one that had known Walpurgis since he had first joined. Walpurgis knocked four times on the door, then twice more. It was how the man knew it was Walpurgis, and a voice called out for him to enter. The newly promoted agent opened the door, closing it behind him.

The interior of the room was dark, the only illumination coming from a candle lit upon the desk. Behind the desk was a man who remained seated as Walpurgis knelt down on one knee, bowing his head. "Mr. Trias."

The man smiled kindly, the candlelight betraying the scars of age on the man's face. "Please, raise your head, Melris. It didn't fit Shaw to be yielding, and it doesn't fit you. Now, come, tell me why you came to me; you haven't visited since you were assigned to Zatao, so you'll forgive me if I presume you want something."

Walpurgis stood, nodding. "You are correct, sir. I came to request a leave of absence."

Trias tilted his head, inspecting Walpurgis' features for a hint to his motivation. "May I ask why?"

Walpurgis shrugged. "You could, but I would refrain from answering."

The old rocket laughed. "You're so like Shaw, Melris. He would have been proud to see how far you've come." Walpurgis crossed his arms, saying nothing. "Alright, boy. You have your leave. How long will you be gone?"

Walpurgis shrugged. "A few weeks, maybe a month. Two, perhaps. I don't know for certain." He turned to the door and opened it, but Trias stopped him.

"Come see this old man sometime when you don't need a favor, yeah?"

Walpurgis smiled, closing his eyes. Without turning back, he nodded his agreement, shutting the door quietly behind him.

Half an hour later, Walpurgis was back in his room, filling a bag with enough supplies to make it to Katarina. He pulled the three pokeballs from his belt, sending out the pokemon contained within. "Gangrel, Satori, Nazrin - I'm going away for a while. You guys will be staying here, not following me. There's food enough for a few weeks in the room, and Mr. Trias will send more food if you need it. While I'm gone you can basically do whatever you want." He knelt down, scratching the pokemon in turn. "Stay out of trouble, yeah?"

The three pokemon nodded their understanding as Walpurgis slung the bag over his shoulder and walked out the door.

The Next Day

Walpurgis walked through the bustling streets of Katarina, weaving through the pedestrians. Stepping into the harbor, he located the harbormaster. "Hi. I'm looking for a ship headed for Vermillion City, Kanto. Are there any scheduled for today?" The harbormaster adjusted his glasses and pulled a list out of his pocket. "Lemme check that for ya."

The hair on Walpurgis' neck stood on end, and he got the feeling he was being watched. He crossed his arms, keeping his eyes on the harbormaster. "Ah, 'ere we go. We don't got none today, but there's one tomorrow morning. Would that do ya good?"

Walpurgis nodded. "That's fine. How much would a ticket cost?" The harbormaster indicated the sum, and Walpurgis handed over the money to receive a ticket. "Thanks." He turned and left before the harbormaster could respond.

Walpurgis ducked into a side alley, the feeling persisting. Drawing his remaining knife, he began to run through the alleys, taking turns randomly.

Officer Matthews gave chase to the man as he ducked into another alley before losing sight of him. "s**t! Wish the Commish would see fit to tell me the b*****d was fast, too." He drew his gun from his holster, hidden underneath his shirt. He walked carefully through the alleys, the area foreign to him. It was his first time out of Kanto, let alone in Zatao. "Drop the weapon." The gun clattered to the floor. "Who sent you?"

Matthews tried to turn towards the man holding him, but the man tightened his grip on his neck. "I don't give information to murderers."

"Wrong answer." The point withdrew from his back before plunging into his leg. Pain erupted from the wound, and spots clouded Officer Matthews' vision. "Try again."

Matthews gritted his teeth at the pain, hissing at the man holding him. "I'll tell you nothing." The man sighed. "I give you points for loyalty, but I'm afraid I'll have to dock you points for your lack of common sense." The man released his grip on the officer's neck as his fist collided with Matthew's kidney. Matthews dropped to his knees as waves of pain and nausea bombarded him. "Who sent you?"

Matthews woke up, his eyes bleary. He shot upright, and pain shot through his entire body. He looked around, finding himself in what appeared to be a dimly-lit room, illuminated by a single hanging lamp. "You shouldn't move just yet, you know." Officer Matthews turned to the source of the voice, seeing the man he had been trailing leaning against the wall.

That's right... I was trailing him, and then he caught me... Why are my thoughts so sluggish? What's wrong with me...? He vaguely recalled being stabbed in the leg, and he looked down, seeing a tightly wrapped bandage where the wound would have been. He turned to the man. "...What's going on? Why am I here...?"

The man pushed himself off of the wall. "Well, that's what I was hoping you'd tell me. You wouldn't tell me earlier why you were following me, so I brought you here so we could... continue our discussion." The man flipped the knife absentmindedly in his hand. "You see, it's rather annoying to be going on a trip and have a last minute delay, so I'd like to keep this short. I'll ask again - who sent you?"

Officer Matthews continued his defiance. "A Saffron Police Officer doesn't answer to criminals." He spat at the man. The man walked forward, standing over Matthews. "I implore you to reconsider." Pain shot through Matthews' leg as the knife was driven into it, and he screamed.

Walpurgis narrowed his eyes at the the man's answer, driving his knife into the man's leg. Saffron. He waited for the man to stop screaming before speaking again. "Does the name Hughes mean anything to you?" The man said nothing, but a quick widening of his eyes betrayed him. "So Hughes sent you, then. How did you find me?"

The man chuckled, his breath ragged with pain. "People have been watching you since you came here. You're a marked man, Walpurgis Night." Walpurgis backed away from the man, withdrawing his knife from the now twice-injured leg. He crossed his arms, thinking. The man clearly figured Walpurgis already knew most of this, or else he wouldn't have changed his tune so easily, even without the poison clouding his mind.

Walpurgis looked at the man. "Nameless Officer of Saffron, it seems that our time together, however short, will now come to an end. You see, while I could let you go now that I know why you were tailing me, I'm also not stupid. The second I do, you'll go to the local authorities and try to stop me. And we can't have that, now can we?" He placed a firm hand upon the man's chin, placing his knife at the man's throat. The man's eyes bulged in fear, and Walpurgis gave him a cruel smile.

"Goodbye."

Walpurgis wiped his brow free of the accumulated sweat as he watched the corpse tumble down the cliff and into the ocean below. With a deep breath, he turned and headed back towards the city.

The boy ran, his feet splashing through the wet alleyway. He was almost there. Shaw would be so proud of him.
An imposing figure cut off his path, pointing his gun at the boy. The crack of a gunshot resounded through the air.
A splash, and then silence.

The Next Day

Walpurgis woke up, placing a hand to his head. Again with the dreams. They were getting worse each day. Pulling his hand away, he stared blankly at the blood dripping from it. He closed his eyes, opening them back to reality, his hand fine. He sighed.

----------------------------------------------

Walpurgis walked down to the dock, feeling the sunlight upon his skin. A tolling bell announced that the boat had arrived, and he stepped into the line of people waiting to board.

The girl came bounding up to the boy as he entered into the room, his face deathly pale.
"Melris! You're back!" She looked over his shoulder expectantly, and her smile made way for confusion.
"Where's dad? I thought he went to go pick you up?"

The boy stared hard at the ground as he fought to keep the tears from
coming back. "He's... he's dead." Although he had seen it firsthand,
announcing it gave it a sense of finality, as if not saying it could have let him
come back. The finality destroyed any attempts not to cry the boy had made,
and the tears flowed freely. "He died protecting me." He choked back a sob. "I messed up."

The girl smiled. "Come on, Melris. I know better than to trust you and dad. Now, really, where is he?"
The boy said nothing as he sobbed quietly, still staring at the ground. Her eyes went wide and she dropped to her knees.
She whispered disbelievingly. "You're kidding. He can't really be..." She broke off as tears welled up in her eyes, obscuring her vision.

Shaw was dead.

Vermillion City, Kanto

Walpurgis stepped off the boat and onto the pier. Vermillion City. Just a little longer. He began walking with renewed determination.
