Anyone passing by the training grounds at Deus Ex Machina that morning would find a strange sight awaiting them. Well, okay, an average sight, given that all Hunters were more or less inured to strange by now. Unless it was this particular Hunter, who was green as you could get and not be fresh out of the pod. Currently, he was attempting to awkwardly whip a large glaive around, and largely failing miserably. "Ow!" Don't try and spin me! You haven't the arm strength for it yet!"But I saw it on-" That is a... what is it? Oh. Yes. Video game. This is not a simulation, Crispin.Crispin shook out his wrist, wincing. "Yeah, I figured that out, thanks." You must be capable of surviving against all who would approach you. Strengthening is imperative. It takes time. The trainee sighed. He was more than ready to just level up already.

Ennea yawned as she wandered back towards her dorm after early morning minipet feeding duty. Minipet feeding was slightly less tedious than pod watch duty, but only just. Any wonder she once had for the strange and fantastic creatures kept in the labs had been quickly worn away by routine. Ennea didn't care any more; she just wanted to go back to her room and sleep for a couple more hours. Until lunchtime maybe. Ennéa idly looked out over the training ground as she walked past. There were a couple hunters out on the courses and the typical assortment of serious over achievers and training fanatics sparring or going through practice forms. Ennea wasn't paying particularly close attention when a wild swinging movement caught her eye. She paused. It was Crispin, she realized with a small jolt. Huh. So he got his weapon. She thought to herself, eyeing the glaive he was holding. Well, that's good. She sighed and shook her head. Ennea turned to resume walking but then she hesitated and turned back to watch him a bit more. It wasn't like she was worried about him but... Crispin was like a stray cat. Feed a stray once, give it some attention, and suddenly every time the weather is bad you find yourself looking out the window and hoping the kitty was okay. It was like that. Man, his form stinks.

Crispin shrugged one arm around the glaive's shaft and leaned heavily against it. "Man. You're heavier than you look," he said, for about the millionth time. "And more patient than I deserve..." Hm. If you did not have the capacity to wield me, I would not have chosen you, Shaiming replied, his sternness slightly undermined by the amusement in his 'voice'. Expertise will come in time. You expect too much too soon, my Hunter. Tales have led you astray."Yeah, well." He fanned himself with the end of his scarf and turned to survey the training grounds. There were plenty of other Hunters around, all giving him a wide berth; nobody was within a good thirty feet of him. He sighed, but as he turned his head, he caught a bit of bright pink. It took him a moment to realize why this color should be familiar, but once he figured it out he brightened and began to wave. "Ennea! Hi, Ennea!" ?Hang on! You gotta meet her! With effort, Crispin hefted the glaive and headed off towards the Death trainee at an unsteady and ill-advised trot.

Ennea grimaced; Crispin had spotted her and was heading her way. Too late now to try an make an escape. "Hi Crispin." She said, warily watching Crispin's glaive swing about as the other hunter moved towards her. "Got your uh, weapon, I see."

Crispin came to a stop about ten feet away from Ennea - far enough away that he could swing the glaive up into a fully vertical hold without clipping her, courtesy of Shaiming, who was quite a bit more careful than his wielder. "Yes! Uh, sorry - I'm still getting used to how he works. His name's Shaiming," he said, beaming. A pleasure. Crispin could feel the dragon peering at Ennea through his eyes. "He says it's a pleasure," he reported, with obvious delight. "And I owe it all to you, miss Ennea. Thank you so much!"

Ennea shrugged, shrinking a little under the brightness of Crispin's praise. "I didn't really do anything," she said, uncomfortably. "But I'm glad you're happy, I guess. " She added. Ennea looked at the glaive with an appraising eye; the long balanced shaft was not too different from her own weapon, she noted with a slight sense of almost approval. Swords and crap seemed to work well enough for other hunters but Ennea had always appreciated the reassuring heft of Baraz in her hands. He had great sweeping reach and when they had worked together Baraz's axe head almost seemed to fly with her swings. It wasn't worth it though, she reminded herself. Any pride she once felt, any exhilaration, it wasn't worth it. They were all going to one day, one way or another, die horribly as payment. Ennea looked at Crispin with mixed emotions both hating his joy and yet wishing there was something she could do to save and preserve it. "His name is Shaiming?" She asked, pushing those emotions aside as best she could. There was nothing she could do anyway. "How are you guys settling in with each other?"

"Yeah you did - you peeled me off the floor when I feel out of that pod, for one thing," Crispin said, not dissuaded at all by her distant manner. "Who knows where I would've ended up otherwise. Easy bait for somebody who likes lying to trainees." The pensive look on his face indicated that he had probably run into some of that type of Hunter... "But you showed me the right way to go, so." He grinned and hefted Shaiming again, planting the glaive's shaft against the ground. "He's awesome. He's a dragon, you know," he said proudly. "A totally awesome dragon. Kinda heavy, though..." I weight precisely what I am meant to.

Crispin's pensive look wasn't lost of Ennea; it was hard to miss when the guy's default expression was usually puppy-like joy. She almost asked him about it but then thought better of it. She didn't want to get involved and besides, it was better that he lean to be wary. So instead she gave him a small smile. "You'll get used to the weight as you train. Your weapon- er, Shaiming will also help you, if you listen." Ennea's smile grew a little sheepish. "I discovered that the hard way."

"Yeah! Yeah, that's what he said. We've been practicing together, but, er... it's kinda hard, since he can't really guide my movements, just try and tell me when I do it right and when I do it wrong. So far it's a lot of wrong." Crispin brushed his sweaty bangs out of his face with his free hand. Then he looked at Ennea, as if he'd just remembered. "Wait, your weapon is kinda... kinda like this, huh? Long shaft? Heavy-ish?"

"You're probably over thinking it, that's why." Ennea hesitated for a moment, but then sighed and extended her hand. The bead on her bracelet glowed for a moment and then flashed, stretching into her axe. Ennea gripped the shaft and twirled it up to shoulder it. Baraz's axe head was much larger and his shape didn't lend himself well to thrust type attacks as Shaiming probably would... but Crispin was right, there were some similarities. Ennea had noticed that herself earlier too. "I can give you some pointers, I guess." She said reluctantly. "Judging from our weapons, your fighting style will probably be similar to mine."

Crispin brightened even more, if that was physically possible. "Yes! Oh, yes, Ennea... teach me, sensei!" He grinned and tried to bow to her, but Shaiming's shaft got in the way. "Er. Yes." A faint chuckle came from the dragon, and Crispin straightened, looking more seriously at Ennea. "What should I do? I, um, feel like... I mean, he's big. And heavy. And I'm a nerd, so... yeah. We're not renowned for being physically strong, you know?" But Ennea was younger than he was, he was pretty sure, and she was holding her weapon with practiced ease. Or so it appeared to him.

Ennea sighed and waited for Crispin to compose himself after his awkward bow. When he was finally looking at her she unshouldered Baraz and dropped into a practiced fighting stance. "I was fifteen when I became a hunter." Ennea said, giving Crispin a wry semi-smile. "I wasn't strong either." She swung her axe, letting the heavy weight of the weapon's head swing her around, executing a quick flashing chop. "Strength is important, but even more important is knowing how to use your weapon." Ennea resumed her fighting stance, holding her axe ready before her. "Muscles mean nothing if you can't fight for crap, you'll get killed... probably horribly." "Okay. Try to mirror me." She said.

"Fifteen?" Crispin stared at her. "Wow, I, uh... wow." Shaiming gave him a mental prod, and he blushed and stopped staring. "Okay. So... match your stance..." It took a bit of shifting around. Quite a bit of shifting, as Shaiming directed him to change his stance incrementally in order to account for the differences between his own weight and that of Ennea's weapon. Finally, the dragon judged himself satisfied. "Shaiming says this is good?"

"That's fine." Ennea said. "Now watch me." She took a breath before moving into a short series of swinging attacks and defensive blocks. Simple warm-up moves that had long been drilled in to her during basic combat training. Once finished, she straightened and looked at Crispin. "Think you can do that? Try it with me this time." Ennea twirled her axe and got back into position, repeating the exercise, though at a slower pace so the other hunter could hopefully have an easier time following her. "Clear your mind and just move." She advised as she brought her axe up into a defensive block. "Your weapon will guide you." Ennea thoroughly stomped on the small pang of unease that she wasn't following her own instructions. She sensed Baraz was passively watching her somewhere, in some corner of her mind, but none of his will was directing her swings. They hadn't worked together in a long while. She swung her axe in a harder than necessary chop. It didn't matter; this was just basic stuff. She would show Crispin a couple of moves to make sure he didn't kill himself and then she would be done. It didn't matter.

Crispin just stared again, watching her - gosh, and he was going to have to do that? Oh, jeez. True, it looked a lot easier than the mental images he had of spinning spears and dramatic sweeps, but the way she moved was so smooth and practiced. There was no way in hell... "I, uh... okay. I'll try," he said, slowly, tightening his grip on the glaive's shaft. The weapon seemed almost to tingle in his hands as he tried to clear his mind, as if Shaiming were reaching up out of the metal to guide his movements. Small movements, not big ones, the dragon said. We must build your strength, but the focus will help... here. Practice on the dummy.Crispin turned and gave the nearest practice dummy a dubious look, then nodded. He carefully positioned himself so that he was facing the dummy, then jabbed the blade at it. To his surprise, he actually hit, though the blade glanced off the dummy's side rather than penetrating.
