Delilah had to admit that she had not been looking forward to this day all break. Honestly it was a day she, like many others, hated to see finally get there.
The first day back to school after the winter break.
Thankfully it was at least a lovely day outside so she could stare out the window while her teacher started to talk about their new semester project. Delilah had caught two key points before tuning out.
First point: It was to be a history project dedicated to an important woman or female organization. Second: It was to be done in pairs. The pairs would be assigned.
It was the second part that annoyed her. Why do it in pairs if she could do a better job alone anyway?Still, her ears tuned back in just in time to hear:
"Delilah, you will be working with Hafwen"
The girl's eyes turned towards the other female. She knew the name and who she was but nothing else. This would be interesting.

The first day back to school after any break always felt like the longest to Hafwen for as long as she could remember. No more sleeping in for one and there was bound to be new assignments as well as projects to work on. Sometimes school just seemed like a neverending cycle comprising of classes, assignments, projects, tests and exams. Rinse and repeat. It didn't really help that she needed to maintain her overall aggregate within the top ten percentile in order to keep her scholarship since the tuition fees at Crystal Academy were a wee bit on the pricey side and Hywel had insisted that she be enrolled in a reputable all female school without any potential distractions in the form of the male gender.
Sliding her gaze to Delilah whom she was supposed to be paired up with for the history project, she found her looking in her direction as well and gave her a smile, picking up her pen and notepad before making her way over to join the other girl in the adjacent seat when the class was given time for discussion with their respective assigned partners. "So... any specific person or organization that you already have in mind we should cover?"

Well at least Hafwen appeared interested in the protect. That was a good sign. Still Delilah had her doubts. When it came to work, she might come across as a bit demanding on certain points. Heck, she just wanted it done right after all. Was that so hard for people to understand?
"I guess that depends on what era or location we want to focus in." Delilah commented back as she turned her attention away from the window and back onto the notebook that rested in front of her. Unconsciously, she had been tapping her pen on the blank page as if in thought. Just a little tick she had. "I'm almost in favor of going for someone no one will think of." Gazing around the room, Delilah pointed to her a few other pairs. "Royalty, Wealthy, Ionic." She listed off mindlessly. "Those are all going to be key for many people. Why not something a little more low key?"
Slowly her lips curled into a smile. "Maybe we could teach them all something that you don't see on the new or gossip papers."

Hafwen found herself liking the idea that Delilah proposed immensely. It was a gamble of course. Something unconventional in comparison to what most others would beyond a doubt go for as her partner had already pointed out and Hafwen knew that when it came to such things, it was either an outright distinction or fail depending on whether they managed to pull it off while still remaining in context with what was expected of them at the end of the day.
"Agreed. We can go for that. It'll be worth it to see the shell-shocked expression on everyone's including the teacher's face when they eventually learn of what we've decided to go for." It wasn't terribly difficult to do a quick math in her head for her to come to the decision that she could roll with this since she could probably make up for it during the exams should the worst case scenario happened.
"I don't suppose that you already have someone in mind when you thought of this?" Not that she was expecting Delilah to of course and Hafwen was more than happy to do her part in going through the resource materials to identify someone who would fit the bill if it had to come to that.

Seeing the light in her partner's eyes, Delilah felt herself slightly relieved. If they were on the same page about this then maybe they would be about harder things later on. It was still hard for the girl to see how or why it would be good to have a partner in this project but who was she to counter the teacher? At least it appeared Hafwen was willing to pull her weight.
Yet Delilah felt maybe she had spoken too soon when she was asked about a person in mind. So she was going to play leader then? So be it. "I haven't picked on but several do come to mind." She started to tap her pen in thought.
"There is Françoise-Athénaïs, mistress of Louis XIV. Helen Thomas, first female member of the White Press. Dona Manuela Saenz, a revolutionary woman. Or even we could go religious." She stopped rambling off things she had seen doing a quick search one day awhile back. "But I am pretty open. Many women have been behind men in power that have never been given the credit they should."

It really wasn't only Delilah who was apprehensive regarding any form of schoolwork that involved a group or a pair for that matter. Most people had a preferred group of friends whom they had worked with prior for the job whenever such a need arose and it was thankfully only every once in awhile that the teacher would deem it fit to assign them their partners and shake things up a little in an attempt to get them to mix around. Or so they always say.
Picking up her pen, Hafwen started jotting down the names of the three women in question when she prompted the other female for them. So Delilah already came prepared to back her idea with examples even before proposing something unconventional like this? Impressive. She was definitely going to have to show that she wasn't about all talk without the necessary follow up actions towards their common goal.
"Yes. It is a great tragedy that most of these women have been relegated to being referred to as the twentieth wife or mistress of these men without any mention made with reference to the contribution that some of them might have made, short of warming their husbands' beds at night." Sure, she might have exaggerated and injected a bit of her own quirky humour here and there but she would like to think that that helped to get her point across and break the ice some when it came to someone she hardly knew like the dark-haired girl sitting next to her. "How about we see if we can find out more about the mistress of Louis XIV and Dona Manuela Saenz for a start then decide who we should go with from there?"

A smile graced the girl's facing when she heard Hafwen speak this time. It was going to be challenging to come up with a decision about this girl. On one hand she asked her for topics instead of offering some of her own. Could be she was just being nice but Delilah doubted it right then. Yet on the other hand, she was willing to work. That was a positive.
"I like the way you think." Delilah smirked with a soft laugh at Hafwen's point about warming a bed. "History was written by men. Sad to say. Sometimes I would love to re-write it."
Nodding once, Delilah looked across the room at a few groups now discussing their nails. "Which one would you like? How about we take today to search our resources and see which one strikes an interest. We can see if we can go to the library for the rest of class.

"I'm sure that the women of yesteryear also thought of doing likewise. If they could read and write that is." Had Hafwen any inkling at all as to what Delilah's first impression of her was when she decided to refrain from chipping in some other potential figures for their project consideration for fear of going entirely tangential, she probably would have tried a little harder to come up with something at least so as to convince the other girl to revise her opinion of her given how mindful she constantly was of how her peers thought of her.
As it was, now that she had unknowingly averted a potential problem that might rear its ugly head later on, it made absolute sense for them both to proceed with what needed to be done so as to make further progress on what they already had so far on the project topic. "I believe that the teacher shouldn't have any objection to that so long as we're not playing hooky and stay within the school campus. What do you say we narrow our choice to between both the mistress of Louis XIV and Dona Manuela Saenz and then make a final decision depending on what comes up at the library subsequently?"
Oh thank the heavens for once that she hadn't ended up partnered with yet another girl who was more interested in making sure that her wardrobe and nail colours were in keeping with the latest trends than the project itself. That would prove to be rather... trying at times although Hafwen had no issues at all with chilling out once all the necessary work was over and done with.
"I have a pretty good feeling that we'll get along fine and ace this. Give these women the recognition that they never rightfully got during their lives." She concluded with a confident smile, giving Delilah a wink as she shut her notepad before getting up from her seat so that they could start making their way to the library next.

"And what good would playing hooky be on the first week back? We would just pay for it the rest of the year." Delilah added with a smile as she joined the other female in standing. It was easy to feel a few eyes on them as they moved. Most of the other pairs seemed to be at a stand still with one staring at their nail file and the other glaring at them. Once again from day one you could already see who was going to do most the work.
At this point, Delilah felt she might have gotten lucky. Maybe she wouldn't be pulling an all nighter rewritting Hafwen's part as she had done so many times before.
Moving over to the teacher's desk, Delilah quickly got them the agreement to go for the rest of the period and headed towards the door. "I just hope there is something on them to give us a starting point. I don't mind web searches but there is nothing like an old-fashion book source to make everything seem more legit. Though what do you want to bet half of the other girls will try to use Wikipedia as their main source?" Chuckling to herself, Delilah looked over at her partner. Maybe this wasn't going to be so bad.

"Exactly. I'll rather twiddle my thumbs and rest easy after we've gotten this completed. Though I'm pretty much willing to bet that there will be more assignments to tackle from our other classes by then." Hafwen quipped, a slight dip of her head to thank the teacher proper for granting them both permission to leave the class for the rest of the period as she joined Delilah in heading to the door.
The moment the door was closed behind them and they were out of earshot of anyone else from the same class who might be following suit, she nodded a few times her agreement with the point that the other girl had made, an amused look crossing her face at the same instant. "Wikipedia isn't that bad really. But one does have to take into account that the quality of its content can be pretty variable depending on what you're looking for. Good enough for a quick read but certainly not enough for something like this."
It didn't really take them long to reach their intended destination. Interesting how a good conversation always had an effect of making time pass faster at times like this. "If our own school library doesn't come up with anything remotely useful, we could probably try the city library next?"
Sirene Naiads It's alright. I'm not exactly that fast a tagger myself either. *hugs* ^^;

Delilah was nodding in agreement as they walked. As depressing as it was to admit, by the time this project was done, or even half way through, they would most likely have three or four others to tackle. Such was the life of a Crystal Girl.
"It's nice for a quick scan but not as a main source. I mean anyone can edit them. Could you imagine if someone said the Sun King spent his days writing on his blog?" Delilah threw back at her with a smile. Not that she had ever heard of someone posting anything that extreme but the point was there.
"Most likely we will end up there anyway. Sometime tells me people will be fighting over books here." Delilah was giving a sigh as she opened the door for them both and slipped inside the library. Slipping past the front desk where it appeared a freshman was already in trouble for talking too loud, Delilah slipped into one of the chairs in front of the catalog. "Let's see what a name search gives us for books around here." She was starting basic. Typing in Dona Manuela Saenz, she waited Though next to her, Delilah had flipped open her note book and started writing down possible searches to use to find her.

"Point taken though I do have to add that anyone who takes that at face value is either very very careless or plainly an idiot." Tossing her head back, Hafwen laughed at the scenario Delilah had used as an example. The Sun King writing a blog? Oh gosh, no. That would be entirely off indeed. Slipping into the library after her, she immediately took the next available seat before the catalog, figuring that she ought to do her part in looking up the other historical figure in the meantime so as to hasten the entire process.
"Probably. But who knows if we'll luck out for want of trying." She started with Françoise-Athénaïs first and foremost, moving onto other possible permutations of related search terms before giving a sigh when all of that came up with absolutely nothing. Of what use was the school library if they couldn't even find what they needed for one of their many school projects? "Drats. Nothing came up when I searched for Françoise-Athénaïs. Any luck on your end so far?"

Delilah quickly back spaced and tired one more thing before a smile spread across her face. "Got her." Reaching up, Delilah turned the screen towards Hafwen and pointed at the third title down the list. Looking at it make it pretty clear: For Glory and Bolívar: The Remarkable Life of Manuela Sáenz
"I say then we have our leading lady?" Delilah was still smiling as she turned the screen back towards her and skimmed the rest of the list. "And looks like we have another name that could help with finding her. A man. Senior Simón Bolívar. Though I am sure I just completely missed on how to pronounce that." She had to admit with a shrug as she wrote the name down.
"As for being a plain idiot, you have met the girls here haven't you? Daddy's money sings." Her eyes never left the screen but her words held a scorn. Yes 'Daddy' paid for her education but she at least did something with it.
Finally she looked back up. "So let's track this book down and see what else is grouped with it."

Hafwen flashed Delilah a smile at the good news. "Seems like it. Let me see if I can find any leads on this Senior Simón Bolívar then." Making a note of the spelling of the name of the male figure in question, she turned back to her terminal to start running a search on him. "Yeah. Some of them seem to think that money can buy them just about anything without having to lift a finger." She gave a snort. Not all of her classmates or soccer teammates were that bad thankfully though she really had to wonder why some of them even bothered to attend the academy if they didn't pay attention during class and were on the contrary more interested in cute boys, spas and their manicured nails.
She gave a sigh when her search came up with yet again nothing. "Nope. No luck with the mysterious man. Why don't we ask the librarian for assistance with that book first then see if we really need to make that trip down to the city library?" So far so good. Yet it remained to be seen if the book hadn't already been borrowed by someone else from another class for a similar school assignment.
Sirene Naiads I'm so sorry for taking so long to tag this one... orz

Delilah was pondering as she gazed towards the computer, skimming across some of the other titles. Nothing jumped out at her but she still has to ask "What about including things about the time period? There might be mention of them in the books at least."
Finally she turned towards Hafwen and nodded about the librarian. "Would you mind? I want to see if they make reference to this time period anywhere and that could be another lead. I'll follow after I am sure one way or another."
