It was harder to sleep, but luckily Melvin had the luxury of a rather annoying distraction. Valentines was around the corner, and he had been suckered by Rep to make something happen. While it was not the holiday he would have liked to organize something for, he did, in a way, volunteer.
This left Melvin sitting in a empty lab room that wasn't being used with some red, white, and pink construction paper and scissors, cutting out hearts of various sizes and tossing them in a box to be used as decorations. While he could be doing something more productive, or he wished he could, he knew it had to be done and he felt too distracted in thought to do something too complex. It was actually a bit relaxing to do something this mind numbing.

Until suddenly the door handle jiggled and clicked. The door creeeked open and a startled Rin suddenly froze in her tracks to stare at the scene before her as if something horrific instead had taken place. It was a moment or two before she'd managed to finally kick start her brain again, "Uhh... what are you doing?"

Melvin froze, one hand with scissors and the other one holding a half finished, pastel pink heart. He hadn't expected anyone to happen to go into this out-of-the-way lab seeing it had outdated equipment, not to mention a few devices that barely worked unless you hit them a few times.
Sitting there, it took him a moment to process an answer. "Uh...." He glanced down at his hands and back up. "Cutting...Hearts?"

Rin's jaw slid carefully into place as she mulled over this new information before carefully picking and presenting a new question, "... whyyyy?"

Melvin continued to stare at her, then back at what he was doing, and back at her. "Because I need to make decorations." He said, thinking that it should have been obvious. He then snipped the heart free from the paper and put it in the box next to him.
"Um...did you need anything from the lab? I didn't think anyone needed it."

"Decorations for what?", Rin was determined to get to the bottom of this strange activity Melvin seemed pretty engrossed with. She had almost missed the question directed back at her. Rin shook her head, "No, I was just looking for something... that obviously is not here."

He stared at her, drawing another heart as best he could on a piece of paper. "Valentines." He said, making a point to not look at her.
"What something were you looking for that isn't here?" He asked, trying to get to another subject.

Rin wouldn't let him, "Valentines? What? Really? Why?" Suddenly she was twice as interested.

Melvin continued staring down at the red sheet of paper, taking the scissors and cutting. "I got drunk during New Years and Rep suckered me into it. I wound up saying I'd organize something for the next holiday and January doesn't have any real holidays." He said, making it clear he hadn't been jumping up and down for this particular holiday.
"What you were looking for, was it urgent? You wouldn't want some superior on your case." Again, he needed to be away from this subject and all it entailed. Valentines day was conversation poison.

"Nope. I've got all day," Rin suddenly looked a biiiit more smug as she attempted to kidnap a chair and spin it around to sit in backwards while facing him. "So lil hearts and chocolates and smoopy s**t, huh?" she looked sad for a split second before looking smug again. "Details please."

He didn't look at her, still cutting another heart out. "Details on what?" He set another heart into the box and looked up at her for just a second. "You sure are a hard worker, having a free day." Not that he could say much as he was using a lab as a hideout to cut out embarrassing hearts.

"Details on this... all of this. How many do you need and is it a banner or a table thing or?" Rin decided to pretend she didn't hear that snide remark for your sake, Melvin.

He sighed dramatically and set the paper down a moment to look at her. "I don't know. I'm just making hearts because that's what seemed like the thing to do. I was going to make pink shades to put over a light source as a decorative light, I'm already going to get the food, and all I have to think about is a big enough place and music. After that, I'm done. People just need a setting. I'm not about to call in for a bouncy house. I'm sure during this season they'll find their own entertainment anyways." He picked up the paper and went back to cutting another heart.
"Maybe a few banners with these too." He snipped out another heart.

"The cafeteria works," Rin suggested distantly as she reached out to sliiiide a small stack of construction paper near herself. "So basically what you are telling me is that you're playing cupid for all of deus and hoping people will all just decide to hump like rabbits?"

He nearly snipped his own finger off at that and looked up at her with a start. "Oh course not! People hump enough here without my help, and I don't want to take credit for that." The very idea of him helping people get sum just made his skin crawl.
"I'm going to throw a dance just to prove that I didn't just quit because organizing these things were too damn hard. Anyone could do it. Everyone is just too lazy to do it. I'm not having booze there either so people can get drunk and blame alcohol and then me for providing it because they slept with someone they wouldn't already sleep with when sober. They can blame themselves and desperation if it comes to happen anyways."
He worked on snipping out another heart. "I could care less if anyone feels romantic during the whole thing. We've just already done plenty of parties. I've tried to settle people in a room for a dinner and that wasn't great. Booze parties tend to wind up in fights. Maybe with enough music and sugar, people will just calm their asses down." He tossed another heart in the box.
"I'm not playing anyone's cupid. Principle to a school dance is probably more accurate." Yup, Melvin was just the most romantic person out there right now. Look at him just wafting Valentine's Day spirit.
