User ImageFeather twitched his ear back and forth as he sat hunkered in the snow his head down. He was almost invisible this way, sitting on his brown feet and the brown marking on his side low in the snow. He had done his best to appear as any other helssi, which he was finding wasn’t that hard. He had spent so long on the road over here and then the long battle and after that only a few nights rest in their new warren before being back out. He actually looked the part of helssi rather well he felt. His fur slightly mussed and a skinny look about him, and he had always been able to pretend he was a meek creature.

It was proving to be useful, he had taken note that the rabbits of this particular down were spreading out farther and farther from home. So he had no fear that he would eventually happen upon some set that had wandered well enough away for him to get at. He didn’t want to seem too forward and kept himself to the outer rim of their warren, past where even the outskirters would sit.

His ear flicked slightly at the soft sounds of snow crunching under someone’s paws. He lifted his head to look around; he could just barely make out some forms in the distance. Well… now was better than not at all. He licked at his chest fur slightly to make it lay flat before he inched forward towards them to pitch his warren in the best of light.

This rp must be completed before these rabbits may try again.

Each rabbit must post at least twice.

If Rowanberry does not post within three days from now, it will be assumed that he arrived too late. This rp can be completed as a successful transfer should that occur.

User ImageThough she appeared much like a delicate hutch doe, Goldfinch was wild by birth. Her father had been a hutch buck, hence her unfortunate colouring. She stuck out in winter and summer, being suck a stark contrast between black and white. She considered herself to be lovely in colouring, though, with her splashes of gold.

She didn't usually stray far from the burrows, though, knowing how easily she could be snatched up. She lost her brother to a hawk and her sister to a feral pfeffa. Her entire family were like sitting ducks out here, but hunger was what drove her on to the outskirts of the down. She even thought about making for the trees - knowing there should at least be some bark to scrape out there. She'd never been that far before and her heart pounded just thinking about it. Elil were awfully hungry this time of year, after all... Could she make it back? What about those hlessi? She'd heard Bracken told them to go, but did they really leave? What if they had disease? What if a fox got her?

All those questions ran through her anxious mind as she tried to dig through the snow and to the frosted earth. Maybe she could find a root or something.

Rowanberry made his rounds despite the snow that insisted on clinging to his fur. He always took his job seriously, but he was even more wary now. The last time he had a run in with a hlessi at the borders he'd been badly injured, and he didn't trust the group that had showed up the other day. They'd been told to leave, and he'd love to speed up the process if he had to.

((After talking with Rain I decided to go ahead and post again with Feather actually being ON the down and talking to Goldfinch. Others can approach if they like. XD ))

Feather lowered himself into the snow, hunkering down to watch closely for a long moment before he lifted himself back up. There was a doe sitting alone near the outskirts of the down, she seemed nervous and it was clear she was hungry. These rabbits weren't doing so well, and he thought they had it bad. Which they did but at least they weren't starving to death.

He approached her carefully, his head down in a polite submissive manner.

"Excuse me miss." He whispered softly and with extreme respect hunkering his body close to the ground. "Could I speak with you?"

Wild rabbits both, born and bred of the Down, Melon and Cinnamon weren't especially close beyond a passing knowledge of each other, maybe an occasional greeting. With it being winter and food being as scarce as it was, the two didn't actively seek each other out, but would sometimes run into each other in searching under the snow for something to sate their aching, empty bellies. Each had their own season where there coloring did well to let them blend more seamlessly into their surroundings. Winter wasn't it. Cinny could practically disappear come autumn time; while Melon did better in the spring. Although if there were dirty snow, he might be able to squeak by.

Cinnamon was outside in the snow. Upon first emerging from the warren, she sat near the entrance for a time, absolutely still, a faintest dusting of snow covering her back and head. Not from fear or taking time to look around. Her last meal had only just allayed her hunger at the time and, presently, had worn off leaving her with that damnably familiar hollow feeling. Sure, Cinny tended to sleep more now that things were harder to help keep her energy up, but sleep did nothing to nourish her. Besides this, the tension brewing in the hollows and burrows down below were almost palpable. No thanks. She'd prefer the cold air and do a spot of searching for food.

After a time of working up a plan on what to do with herself today, she set off, away from the more heavily trafficked areas of the down towards the outskirts. Maybe she'd get lucky. She'd have to be careful. She was missing the stamina that she usually had. Winter hungry elil might catch her unaware if she got too far from the down. She'd be have farther to run for cover and may be out of reach of any owsla that might save her. But what was the chance that there would be any significant amount of food to be found close to the down proper? Not much by her figuring.

[I'll post Melon as soon as possible. I'm going out of town for just Saturday and the first part of Sunday. But ought to be back by Sunday evening. :3]

"Me?"

She didn't recognize the white and brown buck at all and he had startled her. She hopped back, almost skittish, before inching forward. Her nose twitched and her long ears perked forward as she inspected the stranger. He didn't seem like a threat - quite the opposite. She hadn't seen him before and his scent was not of the down, that she was sure of.

The doe looked left, then right, before turning her blue gaze back towards the stranger. She was interested, yet wary. She didn't flee, though, which was a good sign for the hlessi. She had missed the confrontation above ground, yet she had heard of it. Was he one of the group that Bracken had told to clear off?

"What is it you want?"

((Forgive the delay and shoddiness of the rp. ._. ))

Liana was not normally a doe set to worry, but well, she was worried. It was cold, she was hungry, her kittens had grown, and she simply wasn't getting younger. Even her beautiful fur had started to fade and she was little more than a thin shadow of her former self.

This would not do. She had thought to maybe sneak off the Down and venture into the woods, see if any flay could be found, but she certainly wasn't a sneaky rabbit. Or brave. Or much use for anything, really. Upon leaving the warren proper and popping out of the tunnel she discovered she wasn't alone at any rate.

"What's going on here?"

She asked rather loudly, bounding closer to the odd gathering.

"What's going on here?"

Rowanberry's ears perked, and he stood on his hind legs to see better. The gathering of rabbits caught his attention. There was no rule against large gatherings, but in these volatile times they were often a sign of trouble. The brown owsla officer decided to investigate. If this was another brewing fight over flay he'd be able to break it up early before fur started flying. Many bellies were empty, and tempers flared far too easily. He was hungry too, but it was easier for owsla to get flay.

He casually moved closer to the small gathering, trying to overhear what they were talking about. This might be nothing, but he wouldn't be a good officer if he neglected to investigate.

Feather Ear flinched at the volume of the doe's voice. He motioned her over, pitching his voice at a lower octave, sinking himself lower into the snow. "Please Miss, you are beautiful, but you mustn't be so loud." He said softly to Liana. "I'm here to offer you a chance, a chance at something better. My warren is not far from here, we have plenty of food, lots of water, and space plenty." He gave a soft smile his voice dropping even more as he looked at the does around him. "In my warren does lead, they are revered, we would be lucky, privileged to have such beautiful does to join us." He whispered before lifting his head slightly, catching site of the dun colored buck edging closer towards them all the time. While the snow gave him ample protection if he lowered himself enough the does standing around him made it kind of obvious where he was. He needed a distraction, or for the does to at least act semi normal so the buck would leave. The look of the buck, the stance, reminded him too much of his own owsla for him to let it go. What to do, what to do... ?

He had an idea forming but he would have to be careful, and it would depend largely on how well the does would do. He could get out now, tell them to let others know, and then have them meet him at the edge of the down in a certain place and he could take them back. It would make his life so much easier, but first he had to make sure they were capable of such a plot. Though if it came right down to it he would defend the does with his life. This was how he had been brought up, does were important and special.

Blood Toes, like Goldfinch, had been caught up in her own going ons and missed the initial run in with the band of hlessi, however, word had spread quickly throughout the down and it hadn’t taken long to reach her ears. The news had given her great pause and fear had touched her eyes, her mind racing to the never ending list of troubles that could, and undoubtedly would, arise. She had never been much of a worrier, at least not in the days of plentiful silflay and sunny skies, however, the sun had dipped behind a permanent storm cloud and their bounty had run dry, and that could change anyone for the worse. So she worried, and while worry had never done one any form of good, she couldn’t stop it.

With a heavy mind, one so set on all the wrongs of the world that it could simply not see the better opportunities that could possibly come from this, Blood Toes made her way across the down hoping her empty stomach would manage to outweigh her thoughts. She accomplished it not too long after she had set out, her mind occupied with the various spots she could scrape up something to chew on and just how dangerous each of those areas might be. Those thoughts came to a pause however, when her eyes swiveled down a hill to settle on a small group of does that had begun to form at the bottom. It was enough to catch and keep her attention before her mind fell back to the dilemma of hunger, a hunger that was never sated. Her ear flicked out to the side, swiveling in their direction. Safety in numbers, she thought as she hopped down the hill past a lingering owsla. It was worth a shot to pitch the idea. She had always been self reliant, but it seemed a dying warren could change one in more ways than any would care to admit.

It took her a heartbeat too long to notice that the does were not gathering simply to converse, but rather that they were gathering around something. Her eyes searched with curiosity, and then she spotted it, a buck settled in among the snow, a buck she had never seen before. Her head tilted gently to the side, her ear falling with it before she blinked in realization. She hoped it wasn’t so, but what other explanation was there? “A hlessi?” she whispered, her voice stunted by the shock. He fit the bill alright, and it was enough. Her thoughts swelled with a worry that had become deep seated in her bones, and she had too many questions to keep her mouth quiet, but one still trumped them all. “Why are you here?” she asked, her ears fallen slightly back as she settled beside a fellow doe. She wondered at these does that they were not instantly herding him back to where he came with teeth and claws bared, but it was enough to still her feet, which threatened to retreat all the way back to the runs or rush this buck and give him a few scars he would not forget before taking his comrades and moving on. She would stick around long enough to hear what this buck had to say, but she was on alert if nothing else. She was not the trusting little thing she once was, not anymore.

Feather Ear’s ear twitched forward at the whisper and he flinched slightly looking up at the new doe. His ears fell back against his head as he looked up at her through his hair tuff. “I have come with an offer; I am not just a helssi.” He whispered back to her his voice soft. “My name is Feather Ear, Feather for short. I come from a warren not far from here; there is plenty of food, lots of room. Space to raise kittens safely and healthy, does run the warren they are held in high respect. We are but lost lowly bucks without you does. We need you, and there is such room and food.” He whispered shaking his head slowly. He looked between the does giving each an affectionate look.

“Believe me I am not here to hurt you. I would never lay a paw on a doe, not in anger anyway.” He mused softly to himself his mind straying to his lost love for just a moment before he snapped it back to the task at hand. “I was just talking to your warren mates, telling them how privileged we would be to have such a beautiful set of does in our warren.” He said with a soft smile his tail wiggling. Though this meant his plan was out the window maybe if he could get them to turn to his side, they could scare the owsla off by number alone. “I want nothing more than to offer you a chance at a better life.”
