Eva stalked through the gloomy woods, mace swinging slightly and bumping against her hip. The spikes hit her in the thigh, not hard enough to cause pain but she could feel it enough that it annoyed her. Scowling, she took the handle in her mouth and decided to pause in her traveling for the night. It was dark, which was no true hindrance, but prey was not as careless in the night. Those creatures that were not sleeping were huddled in their holes, waiting out the night; or were predators themselves. Eva had no taste for meat fed with meat.
Eva, indeed, didn't have much of a taste for travel either. Her father had insisted his daughter go on a journey to discover the world, and while she was at it, find a new land for their clan to migrate to. She suspected he was sick of being nagged by their older family members about his philandering ways, especially since none of the mares he dallied with had a drop of kalona blood between them. Until Vincent's generation, their family had been purebread kalonas for as long as they could remember. Evangeline's grandfather had not taken his son's refusal to mate with the mare he had picked out very well, and the only reason Vincent hadn't been forced to commit patricide was the old kalona was biding his time. Eva and her sisters made it a habit to avoid the members of their extended family, but especially their grandfather. Eva privately had her suspicions that the old codger had had a hoof in her brother and sister's disappearances/deaths.
It was not the time to dwell on such things, she decided. Her siblings were dead, and no amount of her father's despair nor her sisters' regret could change it. The hour was late, and she slept.

Jessamine staggered through the lightening woods, a painful emptiness in her belly. It had been weeks since she'd succumbed to the hunger that was clawing at her, and it wouldn't be long before she succumbed again. It had been one of the times she tried to pretend she was normal, not damaged or broken. The longest stretch since...Dev...whose wing feathers still fluttered feebly at her ankle. That seemed so long ago...that moment of happiness. Until, inevitably, she had begun to trust him and thought she could tell him her secrets. At least she had inflicted pain on his body as he had inflicted pain on her heart...
So much had happened since then, and yet here she was, still having these abominable urges that she couldn't get rid of no matter how hard she tried. It was pointless to wonder at what made her this way anymore; there were even nights (bad nights) where she almost accepted that she was a freak of nature. She wasn't a Kalona, nor a Skinwalker, she should have been content to graze in a field or pull the leaves from the trees. Instead, the only thing that brought her satisfaction was pulling flesh from bone and sipping at the warm blood flowing from her most recent victim.
Jessamine staggered, and tripped. She landed on the knees of her front legs with a pained grunt. Her normally spotless (barring a few blood stains) coat was almost brown with the dirt she'd picked up. Her mane which normally she made sure was smooth and silky, had twigs and leaves sticking out of it hear and there. Her knees trickled blood now and Jess stared, transfixed at the sight. She bent her head to lick the wounds clean, though the taste of blood set her stomach roiling even harder. She finally rose to her feet again and spotted a silvery white form a little ways away from her. How she'd not seen the body before, she didn't know but there was only one thing she could think, as her vision began to black out, and that was of how very hungry she was...

Evangeline woke suddenly. Her eyes snapped open and she let out a soundless snarl as she leaped to her feet, narrowly avoiding being tackled by a white blur. She angrily snapped her wings out for balance as she over corrected and almost fell as quickly as she had gotten up. Her mace was still on the ground, with a glowering mare between her and it. She refocused on the mare who had just tried to tackle her for no reason and froze...it couldn't be.
"J-jessamine?!" she exclaimed with an uncharacteristic stutter.
It was rare that Eva was caught so completely by surprise, but this was one mare she had never expected to see again.

Jess was not so far gone as to not recognize her own name, and it gave her pause; briefly. Every fear she'd ever had of her children coming back and trying to kill her for abandoning them, or her killing them by accident, or maybe Devicius would even come and take revenge on her for her parting slice. Any number of scenarios that ended in her death played behind her eyes, and behind even that was the ever present lust for blood. The hunger surged to the front again, and she was gone.
With a snarl, she drew her cleaver and leaped at the meat that had spoken, it had wasted its last breath.

ROLL (Odd). Eva dodges completely, striking back at Jess with her tail hard enough to knock her out. (Even). Jess connects a glancing blow, but Eva whips her tail around hard enough to KO. The few moments that Jessamine spent hesitating was enough for Evangeline to snap out of her shock. When the mare came at her again she was ready. It was painful to see that look in her sister's eyes while she came at her with the weapon their father had given her, but Eva was no fool. Jess was clearly intending injury, and what was more was that it would seem she didn't recognize her own sister standing in front of her. (Perhaps she did, but was attacking anyway....a small part of her brain that wasn't frozen in shock or racing to figure out a way to gain control of the situation.)
With an almost lazy grace, she sidestepped the blow neatly and whipped her tail through the air. It connected solidly with a satisfying 'thunk' behind Jessamine's ear, and she dropped like a puppet with her strings cut.
Eva flipped a stray hair out of her face and stepped around the body of her sibling to retrieve her mace. She may have kicked her in the side on her way around, but the mare had obviously been ready to draw her blood and (sibling or not) Eva could hold a grudge.
"Now then sister, what have you been doing all these years we thought you dead?" she whispered to herself, settling in to wait until Jessamine awakened again, this time hopefully more inclined to listen to reason.

Light began to register to her closed eyes, filtering through her eyelids in a haze of red. She could hear that she was still in the forest, so she must not have gone too far during her blackout. At the thought of going berserk again her heart curled in on itself. Who or what had she killed this time? She stewed in her turmoil for a few minutes, trying to delay the inevitable reality that was being kept at bay as long as her eyes stayed closed. If only she could lay here forever, the world in an eternal state of limbo where she had no knowledge of killing until she opened her eyes and made it real. If only...
A pounding began to make itself known inside her skull, the beginnings of a blinding headache setting in. This was not unusual, sometimes she took beatings when she blacked out, from numerous creatures trying to defend themselves from her. In that state, she would shrug off injuries and simply keep coming unless knocked unconscious.
The light was making her headache worse, shining directly on her face and through her eyelids to stab at her photosensitive eyes. It was time to end the facade and move on, all she could do was resolve to try not to let it happen again. With a groan she opened her eyes and gently lifted her head from the ground to have a look around. What she saw didn't quite register in her brain right away. Normally when she woke after an episode it was to a mutilated corpse of her newest victim. This time, she found herself staring into red eyes that matched her own. The mare sitting next to her was gazing at her intently, a mace next to her clearly ready to be used at a moment's notice. Jessamine tensed. A flash of memory lanced into her mind and made her head throb harder. It was unusual for her to retain anything from her episodes, but not unheard of. Maybe it would be easier to give into them if she didn't have to remember...
She tensed at the fleeting fragment of remembrance, this mare had knocked her unconscious...and known her name?

Evangeline watched her wayward sister as she began to regain consciousness. Questions swirled in her mind. Where had Jessamine gone for so long? If she was alive, did that mean her brother was too? Most importantly, she thought darkly, why had Jessamine left the family? When their father had come to power and all but spat in the face of tradition by consorting with their mother, it had caused the elder members of the clan to question his ability to lead. However, the 'deed' was done, and though they were looked down on by the elders, Vincent's children had been taken into the clan and taught their ways. The highest tenet of the clan was that blood came first, and those that did not honor it were cast out as blood traitors. This had happened only twice in Eva's lifetime, once during an ill advised attempt by an older cousin to assassinate Vincent to purge the clan of his 'taint' and again when it was found out to be that same cousin's sister that led Jessamine and her brother to their seeming death at the claws of a skinwalker. Both times, her father had killed them but for the assassin it was quick. The mare who had caused the deaths of two of his children and his only son had been slow. Eva had helped.
A soft moan came from the body next to her and she was shaken from her musings. When her sister opened her eyes and looked around, it wasn't long before she noticed Evangeline sitting next to her and staring. They locked eyes and there was silence for a few moments, before Jess appeared to remember something of their previous encounter and tensed. Evangeline did nothing, but continued to stare for several more moments. She considered what she should say, what to ask first. This was certainly not what she had expected to find in this new land. Father would need to be informed immediately, but first her questions would be answered.
"Jessamine. What a surprise. We thought you were dead." she stated, deciding to refrain from actually asking questions for the moment. Often, she found, making statements and letting others try to answer whatever question they heard within was infinitely more revealing.

((Why do I only write at 1am??))
Jessamine stared distrustfully at the other mare who was doing everything she could to appear unconcerned but by the way that she was staring at her from the corner of her eye was a give away. Whoever this was, she knew who Jess was. The question hidden in the statement also did not go unnoticed. She turned it over in her mind and decided this must be someone from the time before. A very small fraction of the reason she had left her children to others was because she didn't remember ever being a child...though it was dwarfed by her terror that she would snap and kill them in a bloodhaze.
'WE thought you were dead'
It echoed in her mind, the 'we'. That implied there were others who knew her during the void that was her missing memories of the first part of her life. This mare had knocked her unconscious with ease, and she was therefore dangerous. It was time to say something anyway, she'd been silent for too long and the other mare was staring at her, an eyebrow raised as if to say, 'Well?'.
"I'm sorry, you have me at a disadvantage. You know my name but haven't returned the favor." she stalled, trying to figure out what was going on.

Eva considered the mare who's eyes matched her own. This was something she had not thought of. It was possible that Jess was playing dumb, because it was well known what happened to those who abandoned the family. They could roam far and wide, but the scene in the clearing where Jessamine and her brother had disappeared was that of a slaughter, blood everywhere with a scrap of ribbon and tufts of hair here and there. True, they never found bodies, but it had been assumed the skinwalker had dragged them off to consume later and there had been drag trails into a cave filled with bones. Vincent and his remaining daughters had tracked the skinwalker down and killed it for its part in the plot that had killed his other children, but again there had been no reason to assume either sibling had made it out alive. Now, seeing Jessamine alive after so many years was a shock and the first thing she thought was that her sister had faked her own death and left them.
Finally, after a moments pause in which Jessamine clearly began to get edgy, eyes darting around most probably seeking out her knife, Evangeline finally decided to play along and see if her sister would trip up or prove she truly did not remember her. Jess's surreptitious search was futile, she'd hidden the knife amongst some tree roots half a mile away, there was no way her volatile little sister was going to get a blade on her if she could help it.
"I am Evangeline Sinclair, now I ask again, where have you been Jessamine?" she spoke, a note of impatience in her voice.

((omg, no really...why only at 1am does a muse strike me for this rp???))
Jessamine laid her ears back, that was the second time the mare (Evangeline, her mind supplied) had used her name. Jess did not remember ever meeting her before in her life and was highly suspicious of a stranger demanding to know her whereabouts. That, and she didn't appreciate the other mare presuming to get annoyed at her for not complying. Who did this 'Evangeline' think she was?
"What business is it of yours?" she growled stubbornly.

Evangeline felt she had been incredibly patient up 'til that point. At Jessamine's refusal to answer what should be a simple question, Eva's fragile patience snapped, all thoughts of trapping her sister with words forgotten. Her mace was not suitable for threats and so was left where it was on the ground. It was intended for a fight, to sink into an opponent (or victim) and rend through flesh coming out. She whipped her tail around, instead pulling a dagger from seemingly nowhere (it had been concealed in a white holster on her leg, blending in purposely with her skin) and lunged forward. When her dagger was at Jessamine's throat, she stopped and glared into the other mare's eyes.
"It will always be my business when a member of the clan thought long dead turns up, seemingly healthy and whole, years after her supposed brutal murder. So, I will ask you one more time where you have been, my sister, and if you do not answer I will lose my temper." she said, her teeth gritting together and her blood red eyes daring Jessamine to do anything other than comply.

Jessamine's first instinct was to growl and throw her cleaver at the other mare, but since that wasn't an option she took a moment to process more than just the tone that they were spoken in. (And to back away from the other mare's knife edge at her neck. This mare was fast!)
When the meaning of what Evangeline had just said sunk in, Jessamine was at first stunned. She was unable to remember much of anything from her childhood. She knew there had been other family at some point, a brother even, but most of her younger years were a haze of disjointed scenes that caused her pain to try to remember. If she tried especially hard to try, it left her with a worse migraine than being out in daylight all day with her sensitive eyes would.
Suspicion was close at the heals of shock, and she ruthlessly buried any remainder of it, blanking her face and drawing herself up. Anyone could claim to know her from the time before the tangled mess that was before she woke up one day, bruised and bloody, in a cave surrounded by bones. That this person in front of her claimed she was a part of a clan meant nothing at this moment.
"I don't know what you are talking about, I have no clan." Jessamine finally replied, a disdainful note to her voice.

Evangeline felt rage flood her at last. How dare her sister who had been missing for years deny even knowing of the family. It was the most sacred rule, that blood was everything. Turning your back on the family was tantamount to betrayal.
"How dare you! What clan indeed...have you forgotten your roots?! Father mourned you for months, we all did!" she snarled, closing the distance between them again and lunging to bodily shove the other mare into a tree.

The words barely registered before Jessamine was shoved violently into a tree, which knocked the wind from her lungs. Gasping, trying to get her breath back, she snarled silently as she lashed out with her hooves and teeth to remove the crazy mare who was now attacking her.
"I have no family!" she screamed when her breath finally returned enough to allow it, "I have been alone for as long as I can remember. I have no idea what you are talking about!"
She looked about for her cleaver, ready to be done with this whole encounter.

Evangeline growled as she avoided her sister's teeth, but took a couple kicks to the ribs instead. She flared her wings to try to shove the other mare away from her a bit and lashed out with her tail to tangle in her sister's legs.
"I don't know what you're playing at, Jessamine. Until you apparently ran out on the family, you weren't alone a day in your miserable little life." she hissed.
