It seemed almost pointless some days. Miracle's world had narrowed considerably to the mere stretch of water that she continued to navigate. Locked between two unforgiving banks the river that Lavinia had released her into seemed to go on forever. Always the question of “how far do I still need to go” floated through the seathi’s mind in the beginning. Numbness had now taken a firm grip on Miracle’s body and mind. Days continued much in the same fashion; the same routine of traversing the river’s path. The little seathi longed for just a sign that she was nearing her destination but she continued to feel a sense of disappointment every time that she rounded a sharp bend in the river and failed to see what she truly longed to see, home. Had Lavinia really carted her further inland than she had suspected? What happened if this river did not lead to the ocean? What would she do then?

Miracle missed the salty tang of the ocean. She had to get back to it. Her familiar, Argent, was probably long gone by now. Moroseness overwhelmed Miracle at that thought. She hadn’t known Argent very long but she had grown attached to the sea otter in such a short period of time. What would it be like to discover that her new friend had vanished? Shaking the very thought out of her mind Miracle continued onwards. Her body was weary from her ordeal with Lavinia. While the kelpi mare had sheltered her from the worst of the Mazoku, she had still been a little careless in the care of her captive. Miracle shuddered as memories overwhelmed her. She would need to be more careful in the future around others. Her mind still needed to heal it seemed.

Miracle panted softly as she attempted to quell the fear that laced throughout her body. It had been a close call. The seathi had been swimming along without much notice to her surroundings. A forceful tug on her back fin followed by a sharp pain had Miracle stuck fast. Something had attached itself to her fin and she had turned her head to notice a shiny metal object that pierced the delicate webbing. She immediately started pulling against the tugging sensation that was generated from the line attached to the metal piece.

At one point she was almost flung out of the river. But then the metal seemed to tear through the rest of the membrane and she was free. The pain of extraction and the blood that welled up from her wound had Miracle swimming as fast as she could away from that section of river. What had that been?

Was it her imagination? Was this a hint of salinity in the water? Miracle bobbed gently in a section of the river that had little to no current. She was curiously peeking her head out of the water every couple of minutes as she moved silently in the water. The seathi swore that she could taste a small amount of salt in the water and so she grew excited. If there was indeed salinity it meant that she was closing in on her goal. Tides often brought sea water up into the mouths of the rivers that fed into the ocean. If this was the case then Miracle would not have much farther to travel. There couldn’t be another explanation … could there?

Miracle took another cautious glance out of the water before registering the sounds that she was hearing around her. Birds called high above her location and wheeled to and fro in a pattern that Miracle recognized. These were definitely seagulls. She couldn’t believe it but it seemed as if she was almost home. Miracle gave a tiny cry of triumph as the ocean came into view around the next bend. The first part of her mission was successful. It would take time to rest and recover though. Her back fin still continued to pain her and until it was healed completely Miracle couldn't chance swimming in the open waters.

Miracle’s gaze swept the openness that lay before her. Her heart filled with elation at the sudden freedom that she was experiencing. The ocean’s surf pounded her small body and she gave a silent, yet joyous, shout that ended in a stream of bubbles as she submerged under the water. It had been too long since she had swum so freely in her movements. Her time spent with Lavinia had not stripped her of her love of the ocean. It would take time to fully embrace the waters of her home once more and to return to her fully playful self but Miracle could and would wait. After all the saying did go that patience was a virtue.

The little seathi could not believe her good fortune. She was back at the ocean. She'd find her home in no time.

Pulling her body through the mild currents along the beach the little seathi basked in the feel of the random pieces of kelp floating passed her. The pieces of vegetation assured her that once again she was home. Miracle hoped that she would be able to reconnect with her familiar but she wasn’t putting any stress on herself by worrying what would happen if she couldn’t find Argent. For now she needed to rest more. It was with a sudden lethargy that the little seathi returned to the safety of the river’s mouth. It was still too soon to be swimming continuously in the open. The tear on her fin was healing but she didn’t want to push her recovery too fast. If she rushed back into the depths there was no telling what the strain would do to her wound. No, it would be better to wait for now.

Tireless and filled to the brim with seemingly boundless energy Miracle swam back and forth across the width of the river. Her mind played over her mistakes in attempting to satisfy her curiosity with those on the land. Had she been wrong to even try satiating the burning need within or was her experience with Lavinia a mere fluke?
