If you see a pink link, a floating brown/blue/pink gift box or a floating golden/brown trunk, click on it.
Then go to your profile inventory and click it again. When it askes if you wish to open it, you have two choices. Sell it for a profit (prices vary) or say yes and you'll have an uncommon/rare item added to your inventory.
Rare Event items cannot be found in NPC stores, but may be found in the Gaia Exchange.
