Clouds hung heavy over the swamp during one late afternoon. Flashes of lightening mingled in the deep gray as thunder rolled in the distance. Small gusts of wind made the trees sway and creak around her, small creatures scattering towards their homes to avoid the oncoming rain.

Rot's tail dragged behind her through the damp leaf litter as she slowly made her way back from the lake she'd wandered to, in search of anything that may have interested her. She paused, lifting her head to check for predators, ears alert as the sickly green glow of her eyes searched among the trees. When she saw nothing she continued onward as another rumble of thunder lightly shook the earth beneath her feet.

It started with a few drops here and there, slowly building to a crescendo of pitter-patters against wood and dirt. Rot didn't seemed too bothered as her pace remained easy, though now she kept her eyes open for somewhere to wait until the rain would subside.

Thick droplets pelted the buck's hide, but he was mostly unresponsive to the sky's tantrum, tail swaying to swat aside errant leaves and branches that were caught in the angry gusts of wind. It was that that annoyed him more than anything - the wind - finding the disorientation of his senses entirely unwelcome. At least his hearing and sense of smell weren't impaired by the rain in a bad way; but the wind, that Swamp-be-damned wind was a nuisance that even the serious male could not brush aside.

Grave approached a stunted tree whose boughs were thick and heavy with the promise of impenetrable underbrush once the warmer months came, but for now, held just enough weight to curve and give a peek of its empty innards. It wasn't perfect shelter from the rain, but it would do against the wind, and that suited the buck just fine.

With his ashen leg tufts mucked by the mud and splatter of raindrops, he had just finished pushing the heavy bough aside with the bridge of his nose when his glowing gaze caught the glow of another -- distant, green, and almost entirely missed against a molted frame. Grave had to stare for a long moment before he realized the eyes belonged to a kin, one whose dashes of orange did little to brighten her faded frame, the likes of which seemed as though it were falling apart a bit. A closer inspection revealed that she was, in fact, quite whole, but dark -- and a little broken, not unlike himself.

"Lady," he called to her, in case she didn't see him in the almost-downpour. And once he had her attention, he pushed the bough aside even further to reveal the mostly dry dome, tilting his head to the side to indicate she was welcome to join him, if she so pleased. Judging by her looks alone, he thought she might not be so adverse to being near someone as...well, as himself.

Rot would've continued on her way, would've eventually just walked all the way back to the marshes in the rain- if it weren't for that sudden and small flash of blue she had caught from the corner of her eye.

She stopped, head slowly moving in the direction of the voice that had called out to her and the blue glow of their eyes, her own green glows giving a slow blink at the buck that had offered to share his shelter. There was a moment in which nothing happened, rain falling between them.

Finally, she shifted, moving towards the large hallowed tree and wordlessly slipping in next to the larger male. She moved with a strange grace, slow and calm. She turned, standing next to him now and facing the rain, watching it fall. She held her head high, her posture rigid but not tense. It was clear now she had her battle scars, and had survived quite a few fights but not without lasting effects.

A flash of lightning briefly illuminated her stoic profile before she finally spoke. "Forgive my intrusion."

She moved like the Swamp breathed, all patience and poise. He watched her approach with an equally unmoving stand and stare, subtly tilting his head to the side as she paused next to him. The lighting that flashed made the buck blink against the brightness, the blue flame of his eyes ghosting higher in response; he found it apropos that she was unfettered by the crash. After all, what could make the Swamp cringe or blanch when it held more to fear than the sky?

"I hold the rain accountable for the state of things," he responded, smooth and unphased. Using his slim, strong tail to further press the bough out, he seemed to pause with consideration, a long pass of silence between the two beasts before he spoke again. "Though if you'd rather make your way, I'll keep your company." Not an offer; not a request. A statement. He wasn't trying to be rude, he simply had his ways that he was far too set in to consider things as unnecessary as manners.

The doe said nothing for a beat or two, simply enjoying the cool rain. It was washing away the blood from her face and neck, dripping down the fur of her chest into the soaked ground between her hooves. She tilted her face upwards into the spray, eyes closed for a moment.

She turned to look at the buck, her green eyes giving a slow blink as a ghost of a smile played on her mouth. "I rather like the rain." She finally said. She allowed herself a moment to appreciate his stature, that magnificent skull that hid his face and his tail that worked at the back of the bough. She turned her face back to the opening after a moment. "I'm in no hurry. Let nature run its course. In the meantime, I would like to know your name."

"And who am I to deny such a remarkable doe my name?" MotherFather help him; what just came out of his mouth? Grave was bemused inside, baffled at his own forwardness but it didn't show on his stoic features, head still held high and his body unmoving. Until she made a decision of to walk in the rain or hunker down behind the bough, he'd not indicate his preference one way or another. At this rate, he'd probably send off another weird vomit of words that were far from average for him. "I'm Grave." No need to share his given name; it's not like he'd respond to it anyway.

"And you? Dare I ask what I might call you?" Goodness! He made a mental note to stay out of the rain. It was clearly addling his mind, drawing his attention to each drop that ran down her dark-smiling face, the small lines of falloff that shined on her remaining antler. He shouldn't be surprised, he thought, that he found someone so mottled and Swamp-born to be his version of attractive.

The green eyes gave a curious blink at the choice of words the buck had used, taking in the proudly held head and the still posture. Her? Remarkable? Was she really? An amused smile threatened to appear, but she turned her gaze back to the falling rain as another crash of lightening illuminated the swamp and thunder rolled deep and heavy in the clouds above.

"Grave." She repeated his name, testing it on her tongue, her voice surprisingly smooth for someone who looked so rough. It suited him, and even though she did not say so aloud it was obvious in the way she had said it. Slow, with purpose, intent on remembering.

Her gaze turned back to him, lingering there this time. "Do you dare, I wonder." She chuckled softly. Was she teasing him? Subtle, barely there, but yes indeed she was. "I am Rot." She answered finally.
