Marrow wasn't sure what to make of her surroundings the closer she got to the edge of the Marshes. The ground was a bit more solid, trees towering over her, and the water was deeper. She glanced up to the dim sunlight that filtered in through the mist and branches before continuing. Rot and Leech had warned her never to go too far from home, but her curiosity won out in the end, and here she was talking her first tentative steps into the swamp.

There was the rustle of feathers from birds overhead, the snorting of a wild boar somewhere in the foliage, and the croaking of frogs...The noises were new to her, as the Marshes were usually much quieter and anything she usually found was already dead...

The mists curled around her as she came to a shallow patch of water, stopping for a drink.

And he -- ah, yes, he had been here before.

Grave was no stranger to the Swamp or Her furthest reaches; he'd tread much of it, returned to places far and deep many-a-time, and still, it was never the same as he remembered it. The only signs that things were as he recalled were the enormous trees that would not bend to even the Flood's path, marred and scarred as the very kin that survived it. Yes, he'd been here before, but that hadn't meant he knew all there was to know of Her secrets.

As indeed, it seemed one was veiled in mist not so far from him, an apparition, a spectre of what had befallen the Swamp and so many of Her kin. Another lost soul? he mused, mostly certain about it this time. Even the bones of this doe were visible, though something was off -- her skin didn't slough against her frame, and if he wasn't mistaken...she was drinking.

Approaching with a slow shake of his finned mane, he dragged his bone tail along the moist earth and stared at the skeletal femme through a skull of his own. "Are you lost?" he asked, his voice a low rumble that could easily be missed when the Swamp was chatty. If she were dead, then...the answer would be simple enough. If not...well. He still wasn't all that versed at dealing with the living.

Marrow stiffened at the sound of a heavy tail dragging through the leave, raising her head in a flash of movements, a stray droplet of water from her chin falling and causing a ripple at her hooves.

The buck that stood before her had the most incredible of skulls hiding his face, the blue glow of his eyes intense. Her head canted slightly at his question, onyx eyes giving a curious blink in their blackened pits.

"Lost?" She repeated, voice airy and soft. "Perhaps. Are you?"

She wasn't lost.

That was...unexpected.

The buck snorted faintly, his slim tail gliding over the surface of the water as he made a slower approach -- blaming the mist for his mistake. Coming to a halt close enough to touch, Grave regarded her with silence of measuring her degree of death -- and finally deciding she wasn't as close as she appeared to be. He was, perhaps, a little disappointed. The dead were so much simpler to converse with.

"You shouldn't be lost." The words were a touch sharp, as though he actually had half a clue what he was talking about. "You're home wherever you go." Grave would have left it at that -- should have left it at that, but there was something that spoke to him about her. Was it the bones? Maybe. But she was alive, and living things didn't talk to him as a general rule. "I'm not lost, just vexed." He didn't even hesitate as the next words fell from his mouth. "I thought you were dead."

The small bone-colored doe blinked at him from the deep black of her eyes before letting out a soft laugh, playful and amused like a breeze between the trees.

"It is not the first time." She said, stepping back onto solid ground after having her fill of drink. "When I was but a filly, I was bitten by a snake on my tail. It became infected and slowly ate away at everything save for the bone. Luckily it did not spread farther, and has since healed." She explained, glancing back to her skeletal tail. "I cannot move it, or feel much of anything, but I am still grateful to have it."

She looked back over to the buck, tilting her head slightly, curious. "That is a lovely skull you bare. I don't think I've ever seen anything like it."

Sorry! I never got the quotes. E N E

As the doe told the tale of her tail, he couldn't help but look to the bone remains there -- and the way her very pelt seemed to mimic its appearance. She was hornless with bone markings; truly, he thought, it couldn't be entirely uncommon for others to assume her a spectre. Grave listened and watched with attentive ease, his glowing eyes lidding a little. She was unexpectedly sweet. Great. So she was alive and nice. Now Grave was entirely out of his element.

To the mention of his helm, he simply bowed his head in acknowledgement, the accessory not moving so much as an inch despite his motions. "Nor will you again, I imagine." Where she was sweet and open, he was reserved and without trust; his story was too personal to tell just then.

"While it's a shame for your tail, it's...it's good it didn't go any further." He almost sounded uncertain if that was the right response. It was supposed to be a good thing they didn't pass or suffer from their injuries, right? "Hopefully you paid the snake back its favor?" Oh. Oh oh. He couldn't think of it. The last thing he wanted was to find a snake that had been stomped to death years ago. And by last thing, he really meant he would love to find and bury the damnable thing. Maybe he already had. That thought was amusing enough to him that he actually smiled a little, eyes on the doe even though his mind was on death.

"Oh yes." Marrow said softly, a bright tone to her voice. "My brother stepped on its head. I still have the skin and bones back at my cave." Despite the grim topic of conversation, Marrow seemed just fine speaking of such things.

"You are thinking of something good, aren't you?" Marrow said suddenly, the skeletal grin ever present, black eyes keen and noticing the slight lift of the bucks mouth, and the distance in his eyes.
