The first thing that struck Dan about Anica was the similarities it had to his home.

The second was how different it was.

All around the castle was the type of construction and trimmings he'd grown up around all his life, and yet in an entirely different scale. Rich tapestries spanned entire walls. The walls themselves were ridiculously huge. And then there were the magical artifacts. Dan had strong familiarity with such items due to his parents' work with artifice, but here it simply let him realize how scary these examples were. Part of him even wondered if there might be some permanent artifice in the collection and he threw off the thought with a shudder.

Nella stared with mouth open at each item they went past, mind trying to keep up with all the different things and failing. Was that a wolf head? Why was their reflection in that mirror looking in a different direction? ... and was that statue starting at her? The answer was revealed a moment later when the "statue" turned its head slightly to look at them. Nella yelped, clinging to Dan's hair as the guard returned to position.

The young mage glanced down to his lantern. "You okay?"

"Y-yeah," she said, swallowing. "This place is..." she paused for a moment, trying to find a more tactful word to use, and gave up. "Freaky."

"It certainly is different," Dan murmured.

"We're almost there," their guide announced, voice clipped as she increased her pace and dark green robes billowing out behind her. The young mage strained to keep up as he was led through hallway after door, only able to give half glances to the remaining finery and oddities along their route. Finally the woman slowed her pace, coming to a halt in front of a pair of large wooden doors and folding her arms in front of her. "The Grand Magus is inside. You are free to enter."

"Thank you," Dan said, giving a short bow as Nella followed suit on his shoulder. Taking in a deep breath he straightened the sleeves on his jewel colored coat, the shade of blue perhaps a bit eye smarting but undeniably suited for a important occasion. If meeting the Grand Magus wasn't important, he didn't know what was.

Melting into proper posture he opened the door, preparing himself for whatever might happen next.

All in all, this day had been unenjoyable and it was barely half over.

An early start for the Grand Magus had resulted in three hours of discussion with Fellowship Sages just barely after dawn. Only then was she allowed to get breakfast, meager porridge with berries and flavored with a little cinnamon, which was swiftly interrupted by more discussions and what usually kept her occupied -- documents. In a stupor, she nearly ruined one such document by attempting to write on it with her spoon instead of a quill but thankfully it was pulled away in time.

Her sleep had been restless the previous night, though she couldn't quite pin point why and decided it best to blame the weather. Though Shyregoed was encompassed in perpetual Winter, it did have its days where things seemed unseasonably warm and last night creeped into that territory. Thankfully no day or night in Panymium's North even came close to the levels of humidity she and Sloane had encountered in Imisus, or even Mishkan years ago, but for one so used to the frozen temperatures it was easy to be affected by even a slight shift.

This pattern continued until early evening, when the sky was darkening and a dull mist passed through the surrounding forests thanks to the warm air on the snow and permafrost. In what little time passed since, Grand Magus Estratus spent her time in an extravagant hall with a large and long table, a grand fireplace to one side, several windows, and a great deal of space all around. It was here where all official meetings in Anica had taken place at her behest, continued from Lady Waldgrave's reign. It was also something she adopted in her days as the Fellowship's Adviser back in the Northern Bases.

A door creaked, giving way to a large and familiar presence coated in armor. Lady Estratus adjusted her slack posture in her chair and turned to face him, though as her knight approached she lifted a hand to one cheek and gently pulled at the skin beneath her eye with a single gloves finger. "They're running me absolutely ragged."

"Poor thing. It's to be expected after nearly two weeks away," Sloane offered a sympathetic chuckle as he came to a halt beside the table.

With a sigh, she glanced down at yet more documents on the table before her, a fresh quill, and an unopened ink horn. "It was true before we left. There's so much to catch up on," Lady Estratus stood and ran a quick hand through and over her hair, making sure everything was in order, then did the same for her sleeves, "Incidentally, I have need of you."

One large hand came to rest upon the edge of the table, allowing him to lean down enough that the two were eye level. "You mentioned it in the hall an hour ago. They surely are running you ragged."

The Grand Magus scoffed, one hand covering her face for a moment before another loud creak echoed through the hall ahead of them. As the doors opened, Sloane pulled himself away from the table and brought both arms to rest behind his back but he paid little mind to the expected visitors. At the same time, Lady Estratus stood and pushed her chair back, waving at the guests to enter.

"Lord Galdenin, welcome. Please join us and sit."

The name Galdenin struck no familiar chords with the Sword -- a completely foreign person with business that was likely boring. As such, he didn't even turn to glance at the approaching figures just yet. The scent of flame was not foreign to the room with a roaring fire, torches lining the walls, and lit candles hanging from the chandelier above them. Metal, as well, went mostly undetected.

"More stuffy lords, is it?" he whispered, a comment only for her as he leaned closer to ensure she would hear it. The slight grin on his face wasn't the most professional, but then neither was the fact she chewed her lip in response rather than scolding him.

When Dan entered the room some of his nerves from being in an unfamiliar space faded, the fireplace and windows doing a great deal to relax him. Of course now he had the Grand Magus to meet, so that mitigated the other somewhat.

"Thank you," he said, giving a bow. "It would - " his voice cracked as he caught sight of the plague by Sage's side, only just managing to continue through it, " - be my pleasure." He kept a full out grin from spreading across his face, but it involved a good deal of clenched teeth and even then a small smile still crept through.

When Nella caught sight of the knight her hands whipped up to her face, stifling a loud squeak just in time. She wanted to go over, she wanted to talk, but her time with Dan had imbedded into her how important the Grand Magus was and she held in the words. The lantern couldn't hold in everything however, and for a few seconds she spun crazily on Dan's shoulder before burying her face into his hair, getting out all the mental screaming she could in a few moments. Sloane! Sloane was here! She was seeing sir Sloane again! Heaving a sigh while her face was still embedded in her grimm's hair her arms flopped down, the phasmas resting like that for a couple seconds before finally straightening up, floating as prim as could be. She didn't even try hiding her grin however.

If keeping a straight face had been hard before, Nella's antics made it nearly impossible and Dan brought a hand up to his mouth, loosening the muscles slightly before returning the hand to his side. Discreetly as possible of course. Sitting down at the table he decided to let the Grand Magus speak first. He was afraid of what he might blurt out otherwise.

When the footsteps approached close enough, the knight leaned away from the Grand Magus and took on a less toothy expression. The simple voice of thanks did little to pique Sloane's interest, though he did note the voice belonged to a young man rather than someone older as he initially pictured. It wasn't until the slight crack that he turned his head to look, just for a moment, and then he glanced back ahead toward the fireplace. Then his brow knit, he realized there had been a strange flaming light flying around the young lord's head, and Sloane quickly looked back with an expression of firm disbelief and confusion. His arms dropped limply to his sides.

Silence was held for the few moments that passed afterward, the Infitialis' mixed eyes wide and trained upon Dan and Nella. As the two took their seat and Lady Estratus returned to hers, he remained upright though it was difficult to say whether this was by choice or because he was so thoroughly distracted. Crinkling parchment brought him back from his stupor and he threw a questioning gaze to his Grimm who, without looking up from the papers, lifted her eyebrows and asked "Yes?"

A momentary loss for words was not quite what occurred. Instead, there was a short series of half sounds and scoffs until a mix between befuddlement and restrained mirth lay on his face. "Were... you aware?" One hand lifted to gesture slightly toward Danylrein.

"Of what?" her eyes continued scanning the page and all Sloane did in response was point a single clawed finger, "That you know each other?"

"Yes."

The small stack of papers had their bottoms tapped upon the table before being set aside. "I am now." With that, the Grand Magus adjusted her chair, clasped both hands and rested them on the table.

It was Sloane's turn to try and force down laughter, and wide grin peeled away any care for the situation. While his Grimm began speaking, she didn't bat an eye as Sloane eagerly leaned across the table and presented one of his hands to Dan in the hopes of a hearty shake or that, after, both hands were held out to coax Nella over to him.

"As you might expect, things have been rather hectic so I apologize for any delays that may have occurred on our end. I trust the trip was not too difficult?"
PostPosted: Wed Jan 30, 2013 11:18 pm

With Sloane's reaction any last attempt at composure dissolved completely, grin spreading wide and Dan taking in a large breath from happiness. Part of him still clamored that he was in front of the Grand Magus, that he had to maintain protocol and remain reserved, but the other was just too much to stop.

First meeting with the Grand Magus, and he was a grinning idiot. Oh well.

The young mage accepted the handshake fully, grip firm and using his other hand to deliver a few pats. When the two hands were extended Nella gave a quick look to Dan and he nodded, and then the lantern was gone, only visible as an orange and black blur until she arrived on Sloane's hands. She didn't stop there however, as in her excitement she continued up his arm and on to his shoulder. "I'm so glad you're here," she said, trying to keep relatively quiet with the meeting going on but her excitement was still evident.

"No apology needed," he said to Sage, his attention brought back to the main matter at hand. "The trip went very well actually. The guide had us walking at quite a clip a few times, but otherwise there were no difficulties."

Sloane's grip on Dan's arm was perhaps a bit stronger than he intended it to be but the excitement from all three of them was hopefully enough to stave it off. Before parting, he offered a jovial backhanded pat to one of Dan's shoulders and waited eagerly for a response from the lantern once his fingers curled out to her. She was just a warm blur, snuggling against his hands, arms, shoulder. He had trouble holding back his chuckles but he respectfully stepped back a little from the table so their shenanigans wouldn't overtake Grimm business.

"I should say the same to you," one arm stretched so that he could comfortably rest a hand against her back, a finger or two curling about her to simulate a hug. It was truly a pleasant surprise -- no, far more than that -- as things were unfortunately lonely for the knight in these large than life halls. Visiting Anica was intimidating enough but living within its walls felt so empty despite the dense population it actually held. He supposed that was to be expected when most of the active individuals in the fortress wanted a piece of his Grimm and the others were guards or servants. "What have you been doing all this time?" His grin couldn't leave either.

A quiet scoff left the Grand Magus and she adjusted herself again. "I was, of course, referring to your journey to the castle," Lady Estratus addressed noncommittally, but her voice was low enough that it was not something Sloane picked up on once Nella had coiled all around him, "but no matter." It was understandable for there to be a minor misunderstanding like that in all their excitement. Without missing a beat, she continued to move things in a professional direction while continuing to pay the Plagues no mind, nor the grin still lingering upon young Lord Galdenin's face.

"In your initial request, you were hoping to take up temporary to long term residence in this castle, is that correct?" Lady Estratus paused, awaiting eye contact and an answer.

Nella leaned into the finger hug gratefully, but when the question came she paused, dimming slightly. "That..." A swallow. "Things haven't been the best since, well... the meeting." She looked over to Dan, watching his face and thinking back to how it had looked just a few weeks ago. The lantern didn't feel it was exaggerating to say it had been one of the worst times of their lives.

Gripping the fingers her face became determined. "We're better now though at least. And we plan to keep getting better." Not just a plan. It was a certainty.

"Ah, of course." The stupid grin finally faded, the young mage internally mortified at the flub. He had to move on the best he could it seemed.

"That would be correct," he said, giving a short nod and returning to proper posture. "My personal progress in both magic and learning has stagnated within my ancestral home, and I feel Anica could the right location to start things anew."

Not just with academics, but emotionally too. It was time for them to move on.

A few pages crinkled slightly under Lady Estratus' fingers as she procured the young lord's original letter. She nodded, though after he confirmed her eyes broke their gaze and she returned to glancing at the paper.

"I see. Is it also correct to assert that you will require a mentor during your stay here? You are not yet a Seer, so I am under the impression you have not finished a full internship under previous tutelage." Lady Estratus left any ironic thoughts in regards to 'starting new' to herself. Danylrein Galdenin did not need to know that she wholly and completely felt Anica was perhaps the worst place in Shyregoed, if not Panymium, to start things anew when it had such a long history, was the very pinnacle of Fellowship tradition for centuries, and its cold heart down below was now stained with innocent death and dark magics. No, this young man did not need to know any of that. "Are there any particular spells or elements you excel at? If we start there then finding a mentor for you should be relatively simple."

Feeling the slight weight of Nella's form against his fingers made the knight sigh, relaxing, and he tightened his finger's grip for a moment to hug her closer. The large and exceptionally toothy smile he held before he heard her voice waver faltered and disappeared completely at two specific words. Gently, he pulled the flame sprite from his shoulder and to his chest, cradled in both hands while she clung to the two fingers as they wrapped around her middle. Sloane stepped lightly, armor making little noise as he left the presence of the table and moved closer to the fireplace. Her sudden shift to determination from sadness and from joy to that had struck a familiar cord in the knight and one corner of his mouth curled into a grin that didn't meet his eyes.

"I apologize," he knelt before the flames, loosening his fingers grip and holding her toward them as if in offering, "It is something that has weighed heavily upon our hearts and minds, as well." Just as she righted her emotions in a more positive direction, so did he and Sloane's natural smile returned. "Let us not speak of meetings or the past. You are here, now. What do you plan to do, my dear? You and your Grimm, but you most of all."

He recalled, very distinctly, how young she had been when they first met and in such a chaotic situation. It was easy to see, then and even now, that this pair were nigh inseparable which was something to be admired -- but also something to be wary of. To speak solely of one's self as a unit when questioned on a personal level was something he was quite familiar with, something all Plagues understood to some degree. So young, though, without some autonomy, Sloane feared Nella might become too reliant on that comfortable "we" when, before long, she would need to speak only for herself. Then again, perhaps he was worried for nothing.

"Yes. One of my hopes here is to obtain the magical learning I was unable to at home. As for specialties, that, ah..." Dan paused, resigning himself to the fact this was going to get out in the open. "Due to the difficulties I have had with my aperture I have been unable to specialize to much of any degree. My main goal at the time is to work to control my aperture's rebound and perhaps learn why it is this way." Not the best request, but it was all he could think of. Couldn't do much with other magical learning if he didn't fix the base issue first.

The lantern relaxed as the meeting was addressed and placed firmly in the past. While it would never fully go away, at least for now she could remain in the present and enjoy Sloane's company. Looking over to the fire she gestured with a hand, coaxing over a small tongue of flame that she began to play with as she thought.

"Well... the main thing we're hoping for right now is a new start. Dan's going to be trying to learn about his magic, and I'll be helping with that." She gazed at the flame in her hands, spinning it around. "I'd really like it if I could learn and see some new things too. The castle was nice but... we weren't able to get much anywhere else." Really, most of Nella's traveling had been done in the first few weeks of her life, and much that had been a chaotic blur. Not all of it had been forgotten though.

The phasmas smiled, flame flaring up upward. "I'm glad I had the chance to meet you at least."

A black gloved finger trailed its way across lips as the Grand Magus leaned back in her chair, one elbow propped upon the wooden arm. She listened intently to the young lord's explanation, familiarity dawning like nostalgia at the mention of his problematic aperture. When he was finished, the first thing she said was simply "I see," then she drummed her fingers a few times upon the table. "Let's take a different tack. Could you explain to me what has been done thus far that hasn't worked for you?"

Sloane watched carefully, a calm smile in place, as Nella pulled the small flame from the fire. He observed her movement, her body language, and the shape her own mouth made as she spoke as it was the only facial feature she had. As before, his smile faded slightly when his question was answered with a series of 'we's' in terms of intent. She was young yet, he knew, so it was to be expected, but it didn't worry him any less. Sloane nearly lost himself to those idle worries but was quickly snatched out of the abyss by Nella's bright smile and kind words.

"And I, you," he smiled; it reached his eyes and voice despite the newly hushed tone. It was funny how he hadn't even been having a bad day, all things considered, yet it still brightened his spirits. "I hope this castle will be more useful to you. That is," Sloane glanced up at the high arching ceiling, exaggeratedly following the architecture down to the door they entered through, "if one can consider unnecessary opulence to be no indication of certain individuals compensating for something." It was a jab that would likely go over Nella's head in full, a mockery directed at the deceased Lady Waldgrave, but certainly she could appreciate the humor in humans having far too much time on their hands to make things extravagant for no other purpose than to do so. "And one can even find their way."
PostPosted: Fri May 31, 2013 10:15 pm

Dan's mouth opened and closed as the question sank in, the young mage swallowing and trying to gather his thoughts. That... might not be as simple as she thought, and it didn't even cover all the unpleasant memories it stirred up. There were only so many failed attempts a young boy could go through before he started to wonder if it was even worth it. Well, it was worth it, but at what cost?

Closing his eyes and exhaling a long breath through his nose Dan straightened up, reopened his eyes, and went into a long list of different methods tried over the years. Some had been hopeful, others difficult, and others just plain old absurd. One salve applied his eyelids had itched for a week, and they never had been able to tell if it had helped or not - somewhat hard to do when his eyes were swelled shut.

Nella gave a small snort at Sloane's joke, though really it came out more as a squeak. Oh she knew plenty about unneeded opulence! Her Grimm's parents weren't bad people - even with the glances they still shot her at times - but they had a certain... snootiness, along with all the trappings that came with it. Not quite to the degree seen here, of course, though an apt analogy. Did she enjoy many of the benefits that this luxury gave her? Definitely. Did she want to see more of the posturing and incessant branding of every correspondence and piece of Galdenin property? Heck no!

Then again... she wouldn't be seeing the Galdenin household for awhile, would she?

"Maybe it's their minds," she said, smile going somewhat thin. "They seem to be pretty small and closed in some nobles." An unfair jab perhaps, but with how she had been looked at some official gatherings with Dan she didn't put it past them. "I should be okay though, I've lived in a castle." She spread her hands and let the flame within dissipate, watching the sparks float up and fade. Leaning back onto her hands she looked up to Sloane, gaze hopeful.

"Would it... be okay for me to visit you once I'm here? I-if you're too busy that's fine." The lantern wouldn't lie - she wanted to see Sloane more, to get to know him. In the cold walls of Anica, she would need all the familiar faces she could get.

Though for the most part Lady Estratus visibly appeared impartial to all Danylrein was telling her, when the salve was mentioned her expression shifted; one corner of her lip twitched, brows setting slightly lower and knitting the smallest bit with what seemed to be concern. "I see..." Her voice was low, more of a whisper as she dragged her gloves fingers across her lips and chin. "Using something like that in attempt to "fix" an aperture is ill advised."

After another moment of thought, the Grand Magus brought her hands down and clasped them together atop the table. She scrutinized young Lord Galdenin, mulling over all he told her, expression reverting back to the impassive look of calm judgment she held since their introduction. "I can assure you, the mages here will not simply grasp at straws in effort to gain recognition for assisting someone with a unique situation. We will find something that works for you." Her hands moved again, pulling a single piece of parchment near and gently plucking a quill from the nearby inkhorn. She scribbled quickly, her hands working almost mechanically, but her scrawl was neat. Five lines were written on the parchment, evenly spaced, before she pushed the sheet to Dan. "In the next week, I suggest you familiarize yourself with these names. Seek them out. They are Seers who reside here and will have beneficial advice, if nothing else. Write what you learn from them beneath their names and return it to me when you feel you can no longer benefit from them."

Nella's small laugh caused Sloane to smile, though it lessened when she made her jab. He understood where she was coming from; every noble he had ever come across, save perhaps Dan, Sage, and Yizhaq, held a great and biased loathing for their kind. Despite this, it was difficult for Sloane to fault them for that alone when what they were born from, regardless of their own abilities to harness it, destroyed their lives and murdered their loved ones.

"Perhaps you're right," he said quietly, weak smile still present.

He had to admit, it was interesting to meet a Plague so young who had been born and raised in a castle as he had. Sloane watched the flame in her small hands with great curiosity, tilting his head subtly as she released it and lifting his chin to follow the floating cinders until they became specks of ash. His gaze lingered at her question, causing him to double take at the sudden shift in her voice. Sloane's eyes held surprise and then sympathetic reassurance as his smile returned. "Of course you can!" His enthusiasm was clear in his tone but Sloane was careful to keep from raising his voice and interrupting the meeting behind them. "I'll never be too busy for company, day or night." He, too, wanted to know Nella better and understood well the need for companionship not only among Plagues but in a place so large it felt endlessly lonely despite its high population.
PostPosted: Mon Jul 22, 2013 10:27 pm

Dan took the piece of parchment in hand, grasping it tightly between his thumb and first two fingers. He almost crumpled it at first with the low, desperate hope that came with its meaning, only just keeping his hand from going that one step too far. A darker part of his mind whispered that these teachers would be no different that the ones that he'd had before, that he was still doomed to failure, but the young mage had to do his best to ignore it. He would never succeed if he thought he had failed before he even started.

"Thank you," he said, giving a short bow of his head. "Is there anything else you would wish me to do while present within Anica?" After all, Dan wasn't just here to help himself - he was also here to help and learn more about the Fellowship. Even now he despised how insignificant he had felt at The Meeting. It was time to start changing that.

Nella brightened - literally brightened, her own personal light flaring for a moment and hands being clasped just below her mouth - when the Sloane's words reached her. "T-truly? Oh thank you!" She nestled against the larger plague, arms resting against the armor and head turned slightly to the side. The lantern's next words were much quieter, hands grasping the metal as she spoke. "It... will be nice having another friend while I'm living here."

The Grand Magus watched the young Galdenin lord carefully as he read over the parchment, her eyes scanning his features and the grip of his hand. There was a desperation in both she recognized but appeared not to acknowledge. Lady Estratus' head tilted the slightest bit at his thanks as she listened attentively to his question, hands clasped and arms rested on the table before her.

"Work. Study. Lend hands to your fellows where needed." The Grand Magus leaned back and craned her neck, posture straight and poised. "Though you are Fellowship by blood and birth, and the Galdenin name is indeed known, I hold doubt as to your personal accomplishments in that regard. One does not need magic to function within this Fellowship and less so to help one's fellow man in these barren mountains." Her eyes flicked briefly toward Sloane and Nella by the fire and, though, faint, her expression softened as did the tone of her voice, "Even if that man be Plague." The "task" was simple; Danylrein just needed to prove he was worth his salt like any Shyregoedian man, through hard work, dedication, and no small amount of altruism. Regardless of Dan's strengths and weaknesses, if he kept his nose to the grindstone his merits would become clear even to himself.

Sloane's eyes brightened as Nella's entire body did, particularly noticeable within his blackened eye upon its blood red swirl. A hand raised as she pressed against his chest plate, large fingers hesitant to wrap around her small form but outstretched longingly. His smile was strong but it held a certain tenderness, a vulnerability, and while the knight's expressions were always quite sharp there was an undeniable empathy in his gaze.

"You've no fear of lies from me, little one," he cooed gently, finally resting his palm against her back and wrapping a few fingers around her middle and shoulders, as careful as he could be of his claws, "What are we worth if not our word?" A quiet, subdued laugh left his throat before he offered Nella a careful squeeze -- the closest thing he could offer to a hug. "Friends will be in no short supply here, I promise you that."
