It was frustrating to try to argue with one's ancestor, especially when one's ancestor was bullheadedly trying to keep the tradition of patience! alive in their descendent. Avalon wasn't sure why she kept trying anymore, finding that the old ghost of her great-however-many-grandmother was more of a hinderance than a help. How does my magic work? only met with responses like Oh, Tatiana, darling, it'll surface when it's time. Or long, pointless, bootless stories about Nimue's struggles with learning her own magic, a thousand years ago. None of it answered Avalon's questions. None of it made anything clearer.

Gee. Thanks. So useful, Grandmother.

She returned to the same place she was when she left, standing below a streetlight near the shopping district. (No one noticed a single person vanishing into the ether during rush hour.) Hours had passed and night had fallen like a curtain--where once the air around her had been warm with sunlight, the darkness now chilled her to the bone. "What a waste of time," she huffed, tugging her coat straight.

Meru had no idea what she was doing out at night. Luckily, she didn't have work the next day so she wasn't expected to be up early. Something about going out as Meru and going around the city was calling her, but she had no idea why. There was a lot of things she didn't understand.

"Meru... Even my own name confuses me." Sure, on the first night she even became Meru, it felt right, but she wanted to know why it felt right? She didn't even know what the name 'Meru' meant. Overall, despite her being okay with the name, Meru was completely clueless.

She sighed right before something caught her eye. There was a flash near a lamp post and then... There was a person? Her eyes grew round as she noticed the girl mutter something to herself. Unable to help herself, Meru made her way towards the girl.

"W-what... Was that?" Meru blurted out.

Oh, great, was there a civilian--Avalon turned and got an eyeful of what had to be a knight. No sailor collar, no bow on the minty-haired girl's a**. No Chaos aura. Therefore: Knight. "Please tell me you're new," she said. "The last thing I want to do is spend the night explaining wonders to someone who's already heard it five times." If she'd ever even been to her wonder, this girl (she looked young) hadn't been paying attention to how exactly she got there and back. Avalon preferred to think that the Page just hadn't ever been to her Wonder at all.

"I'm Avalon, Squire of Earth," she said, offering the girl a hand to shake. "And you're… I'm sorry, I haven't seen a page dressed like you before?"

"New as can be, I think," she said with a nervous laugh. Meru didn't really know what she was doing, but she was out there. "I just... became this about a week ago. For the most part, I had avoided going out, but something was tugging me to go out and do something at night, but yeah... Still figuring that stuff out."

She smiled as Avalon held out her hand. Meru took Avalon's hand and shook it. "It's nice to meet you, Avalon, Squire of Earth." Meru didn't know if she had to say everything or not, but decided to anyways. "I'm Meru, Page of Cosmos. I'm not sure how much I can tell you from there... That's all I really know, minus that I feel a little stronger and faster when I'm Meru and not my civilian self."

Meru felt kind of pathetic, but hey, at least she was being honest.

Avalon wanted to tell Meru to keep avoiding it. That there'd be nothing for Meru in this but pain. But it didn't have to be that way and Avalon wasn't much for scaring kids and she patted Meru's shoulder after dropping her hand. "Yeah, well, that's really all you get when you're just a page," she said. "You're supposed to get magic. So… I guess you don't have a clue what wonders are or where your name is from, do you?" It seemed an obvious assumption.

With reluctance, Avalon draped an arm over the shoulder she'd just been patting. "C'mon, Meru," she said. "Let's go to the library and find out what you ought to expect."

"Magic... That sounds amazing!." Meru had heard stories ever since she was little about magic, but hadn't really thought of it to be true. Then again, there had to be something that was magical already since she could will her bracelet and ring out of thin air and then transform.

Life was just that unexplainable...

Meru cracked a smile, looking as though she did know something. When she spoke again, it definitely was different. "Nope. I don't know that either. Sad huh? Definitely don't mind going to the library though. I've never been a good 'internet' person..."

"But I have to admit, I have no idea where that is either... I just moved to town not to long ago." She was thankful for the arm that Avalon through over her shoulder. Meru smiled. "It would probably better if you lead the way to that as well." She let out a pathetic laugh.

Eh, well, that was one way to think about it. Avalon was feeling increasingly sure that she'd feel a lot better about things if she gave up the magic and got an actual weapon. One with a sharp edge… the scarred part of her shoulder throbbed at the memory, but she didn't give in to the urge to rub it until the muscles un-bunched. "Kind of sad," she said. "Alright, so--here's the thing. Wonders are where your powers come from. You swear allegiance to your Wonder and your Wonder gives you the ability to take on this form, here, as Meru Page of Cosmos. Mine turns me into Avalon Squire of Earth and gives me this--" she called her wand in and held it up before them. "The way it works was a little different for me than for others. I had to give up my powers for eight months to learn patience." It hadn't worked. "Most people just get it. Bam. New powers, new weapon, fancier clothes."

She took a breath. "My wonder's here on Earth. Yours will be who the ******** knows where. And I don't know if you'll be able to breathe, so, that's why we check it out beforehand and theorize about what to expect." Meru Page got herself frog-marched into the library, and the pair of them settled down at one of the computers. "D'you know how to spell Meru?"

"Wonders.... Powers...." Meru listened carefully as Avalon talked. When Avalon brought up that she had to give up her powers, Meru was kind of surprised. "I don't even know how this happened to me. A big black thing was attacking me and it kind of just... Came?" She lifted up her right hand. "It's pretty and all, but haven't done much with it minus changing to Meru."

She followed Avalon diligently to the library. Since it was the first time she was here, at least Meru could find it during the day if she ever needed it. Meru was a little bit surprised it was that easy to get into the library. "Is it normally this easy to get in here at night?" Meru felt a little bit bad, as if she was trespassing.

"It's M-E-R-U..." She paused a little bit to make sure. Nothing was tugging at the thought that it might be wrong, so Meru shook her head. "I'm pretty confident that's the way to spell it..." It made her feel a bit stupid, but what didn't in this alter-ego life of hers.

Meru was about to step inside when she froze. Something didn't feel right. They were supposed to be on the 'good' side of this war, right? Breaking and entering ... they're not supposed to do that! "I... Can't go in." Something was holding her back, but she didn't know what. "It doesn't feel right..."

She took steps back and was ready to leave. "I'll seek you out another time, Avalon." Maybe the new page was just afraid of what she could learn or find out, but tonight was not the night. Meru ran off in some random direction, wondering how she got herself into this mess.
